  1. I can only imagine what type of caches this is going to inspire. Just what we need. At least Garmin will selling more GPSR's!
  2. Does this mean I cant post a topic on why not to put dressing on the salad before refrigerating? It already proof-read and everything! Seriously, I never really minded non-geocaching posts, as long as they were not the rule. I feel like we have our own little community going on in here, and if someone is looking for advice on something (even when it isnt about geocaching), I have no problem with that. I will continue to post threads regarding questions that I come up with, but if someone needs some recipe ideas, hey...I'm a pretty good cook. (at least according to friends and family)

  4. Everyone else has said it all, but thanks anyway, for keeping things going. It's a tough job, but we all appreciate it. Macro

  6. I dont use ham radio, but the team does carry handheld walkies while out in the woods. It's a great way to keep in contact while we check out different locations. Each person having their own GPSR and walkie makes things so much nicer on long hikes. We can cover much more ground and find more stuff!
  7. I never leave any foodstuffs in caches. There are many black bears around this area, the last thing I want is someone to get mauled while hunting a cache. Little critter may destroy a tupperware container trying to get at something, but a 400Lb bear may destroy me trying to get to that same container...so please...keep the food in your pack, and leave something else when you geocache! Thanks
  8. Is there a way to tell if a cache is members only? (without logging out and trying to access every cache individually to see) Just wondering.
  9. DO: Bring extra batteries for your GPS with you. DONT: Walk past litter that could easily be hiked out.

  11. Have you tried just plain freshly squeezed lemon juice. It's natural and has no fat. Pretty good on most salads.

  13. May also want to try mapquest.com. You can search by town and/or state. I believe there is a way to get waypoints on that site. Then you could just search for nearby caches by waypoint. Good luck and enjoy your stay over here!
  14. Check out this thread I posted a while back. GPS unit accuracy thread I have gotten used to it. Sometimes, its spot on, other times, no where even close. At this point, I just try to establish a reasonable search area, turn the GPS off, and go from there. If I keep following the arrow, I wind up wasting time. Good luck!
  15. I post a "can't find" after my first unsuccesful attempt. I always return...every cache I have gone after I eventually found...even if it took 3 trips! Posting your experience is important. A "cant find" can be just as helpful to the next hunter...knowing what not to do is just as important as knowing what to do...at least in Geocaching.
  16. I never say that I have great GPSR reception any more. Even if my Etrex tells me I have 7 feet accuracy when I start off, if I say that out loud, sure enough once I am 500 feet away I will lose my signal. Happens allllll the time.
  17. quote:Originally posted by QuixotiC: It seems like there is a delicate balance to making a hard find and making an impossible find...a really difficult find I would assume brings a greater rush when you figure it out/find it- so I pose the question how hard is too hard? How involved should the pre-outting prep be? Could it be? Just a thought... QuiX "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams" I ran into this problem when placing "Alluvial Material" with Team_epitome. Click Here We found that the trick is in giving the right clues. You can place a cache in the hardest possible spot to reach but if the clues are good, it may still be an easy find. The key is to not mislead or to have hunters looking somewhere they shouldnt. After we had placed this one, I was upset to hear people talking about disturbing the environment looking for it...when I thought about it, that was our fault for not being more clear about where, and where not to look. Good luck placing a hard one..the real reward comes when the first find is posted...it makes it all worth it! ...and what is that quote from? I heard it in a song and am wondering what it is.
  18. This isnt triangulation, but you could alter the concept a bit to utilize it if you desired. Incidentally, I used trig to figure out the general location on this one. Cache that requires plotting coordinates of various location to resolve the target area
  19. Any official word on what the problem has been? or an ETA on getting it resolved?
  20. Seriously folks, it seems the new cool cache idea around here is to put them out in the area swamps. A walking stick is basically a requirement for these. They come in great for helping to keep balance in the marshes, you can test how deep the water is, move reeds out of the way without changing your footing...just so many uses. I wont go to the swamp without one.

  22. Not sure if there is a number that would work for this. I agree that one needs to find a few before they start planning their own cache, but how many is kind of arbitrary. If you found 20 "lame" ones, that may not be better than someone who found 3 or 4 really great caches. I think one of the best things you can do if you want to improve the caches placed in your area is to promote the caches that are well done. When I do a cache that I really like, I spread the word. Either I write it up on the cache page when I post my find, or mention it here in the forum..but I always make sure to let people know what a good example is. By pointing people towards "textbook" caches, they will quickly learn what a good one should be. And to put my words to work...if you are in NJ, and are looking to place your first cache, check these out...I think they are great examples of well thought out caches... My first find, I revisited last weekend Good example of an easy 1/1 placed in a high traffic area A good example of a virtual One of the better "difficult" cache hunts in my area
  23. To answer the question of if this is normal or not, I really havent seen this in logbooks, cache description pages, or in this forum. It is not a common thing. I 'm not one to censor others, but in this case, it is probably inappropriate.
