  1. I paint mine! When you get them, scratch them just a bit with sandpaper and put a good coat or two of paint on it. It should be fine for years outside. All the ones I have found have been in fine condition. I love amo cans for cache containers...they are much more durable and cost effective than anything else I have seen.
  2. If this person admitted trashing your cache in an email, forward it to Jeremy. That is ridiculous, there is no call for that. Let try to act like grown ups...I can't understand why a registered member of this site would have so much disregard for the environment...whoever you are.. GROW UP!

  4. Mopar...Where the heck have you been? Combination Rock awaits!

Couldnt have said this better. When I first started I used to rehide caches a little too well. After a short time I thought about it and started trying to rehide caches to match the original intent....even when I disagree with the motive. What gets even more annoying than moving the cache, is leaving landmarks out around the cache in the general area to clue people into it. I have seen this a few times, luckily not with mine....In fact, besides Bassoon pilot..no one can even find a couple of mine!
  6. My vote goes to heatgun + razor blade. As long as there isnt a "VOID" tamperproof seal you should be fine. (and I cant imagine there will be on something like this) Be careful with the heatgun...if its cold outside you can easily shatter the windshield, do it when its warm out. Also be careful not to burn the sticker...it doesnt take much to light up paper with those things. Good luck

If no one finds alluvial or combination before we do the next one, we are naming our 3rd cache after you BP! Glad you had a good time...we hope everyone else does too. (not getting you car broken into will help in that respect)

  9. I recently went hunting a cache near a township park. In the park that day, there was an egg hunt for the little kids from the neighborhood. As I watched the kids look all over for hidden easter eggs, I smiled as I thought to myself that this was no doubt the original geocaching! It didnt occur to me before that....that what we do is just a really high tech easter egg hunt. Some things never change!

  11. Well, if you ever put this one out there, maybe I will take a trip. This sound like a really nice weekend trip. I hadnt thought about a cache hunt based on a fishing trip...but I love the idea. I am planning to do an overnight one on the Appalachian trail. Nothing with a theme, just a very long hike, something requiring a campout.
  12. I think some people are in it for the fun, and not into tracking their progress. I log all my finds both in the book and on this site...but some folks just arent into it I guess. Thye like geocaching, but maybe just arent into the accounting part of it. At time I kinda wish someone could log all my finds for me, so that I could just hunt caches and have the website updated for me. Lets be honest, it can be a lot of work. Say you go out and find 8 caches in one day. At half of them you took WG dollars. You now have to create 8 different log entries, and then go to the WG site and log bills. Your talking at least an hour in front of the computer. I can see why some may avoid that.
  13. I have done well finding 3/3 without a lot of searching. I have found some 4 and some 5, but not without a lot of searching, and clues.
  14. #8 - Mt. Evans, Colorado (highest paved road in North America - 14,216ft (if I remember correctly)
  15. I think I may have to pick one up! Nice job, hope to have one soon.

  17. I really like the idea...a lot. Sounds like it may take some work to get it up and going, but this could be a great cache from the sound of it. Good luck getting it done. Maybe you can post something in this thread when its complete so that some of us "Yankees" can keep an eye on it.

I had my NRA sticker, NRA hat, and Air Force hat, sitting by an American Flag on the back deck of the car...these folks knew exactly who they were stealing from. Just an update..at the last totaling, the crooks got away with $1600 in merchandise they charged on the stolen credit cards before we got to report them stolen. Some people just have no respect. We didnt let it bother us though, we returned 2 weeks later and finally placed that cache! After all that, only one person went after it so far.

  20. I think its a great idea. Ratings will help me know if my caches need improvement or not. It would also assist in weeding out the poorly done caches. Of course people will get hypersensitive if someone dislikes their cache...but maybe that is what we need, a little honesty. I have taken criticism for caches I have hidden, and I tried to use what was said to improve the cache. We should all be willing to at least hear the thoughts of those who took the time to hunt our caches.
  21. I think the term "buried" is frowned upon due to the images it evokes. The tree huggers hear that and think we are out in the woods with shovels, digging for buried treasure. I have no personal issue with a buried cache as long as it is clearly marked (so as to avoid digging a hole that should be dug). The area the cache is hidden make a huge difference in my last statement. If we are talking about a wooded strip of land 20 yards across between recreation areas in New York City....I think that burying is a bad idea. However, if you want to hide an ammo can out in Montana, 30 miles from the nearest town, and you leave a landmark set out where the hunter should dig... I see nothing wrong with that. It's all in the perception.
  22. Just go to the main page, click on "Hide & seek a cache"...then fill out the online form...bingo..its that easy!
  23. Some folks have signature items, so I have just come to expect them in caches I find. I typically dont trade much out anymore...most of the time its "took nothing - left nothing". When I do trade, I always try to leave something usefull, I never leave junk. (at least I dont think its junk) I dont get overly upset about it, but I do agree, many caches wind up be looted for all the good stuff, and a lot of useless crap remains. For really hard caches I dont mind because they were placed so that adults could find them, but for the easy ones that many cachers bring there little ones to, I try to leave something fun for the kids.
  24. I will tell you this much...when you are convinced that you are in the right and someone else is causing the problem, give them enough rope and eventually they will hang themselves with it. I have to believe that as park official become more aquainted with geocaching, and see the measures we take to protect the environment, it will become clear who they need to concern themselves with. It is going to be really hard for them to single out a person with a GPSR in one hand as being a problem, when the other hand is holding a trashbag full of litter they are packing out.
  25. Maybe this is because I am a math person, but I always just kinda transpose the numbers as I am hiking. Based on .1 Mi ~ 500 ft, I just easily see things like .05 as 250ft, or .01 as 50ft, and so on. Once I am under a mile I always start thinking in terms of feet. If I am standing on the top of a hill, I have a very difficult time visualizing how far away 1/4 a mile is, but it really easy to see it as around 1250 feet....I just think of it as around 4 football fields long. Good luck
