  1. I had a similar problem with my old blue years ago. The problem then was a loosening in the screen connection.

Try these things and see if any of them work. They did for me, at least it didn't permanintly fix the problem but it gave me a good idea of what was happening.

When the screen blanks, or causes those lines grip the top and bottom of the GPS between your thumb and fingers and squeeze thru the long axis. Sounds odd I know but that was all mine needed to get the screen to work for a while.

Later when it was really dieing I would smack the top of the GPS into my other hand, effectively forcing the electronics "up" Whatever the connection was it was flakey and it eventually died after a few months of that, but that was a perfect reason for me to upgrade.

  2. I got my Serpentinite EarthCache published today. I've set up a Bookmark list for State Rocks and Minerals Let me know what other ones are out there and I'll add them to the list. Don't be shy about adding ones from other countries either.

I am just appauled that some states don't have a state rock or mineral :anibad: It sounds like you need to start writing your state lawmakers to get their act in gear. They've had a good 200 years or so to pick one (or more).

I just did a cache in Washington that has you walk by a large Serpintine outcrop to get to it. A very cool looking area.

Washington State Gem is Petrafied Wood

I would add this "Trees of Stone EarthCache" to your bookmark list.

  3. Another situation to contemplate.

How many EarthCaches do we want to start having? Does every waterfall, natural arch, cave, quarry, mine, or etc... need to be an EarthCache? Like every cemetery now having a geocache, or do we just want to have an example in a given area? How would you then define that area-US State, Canadian Providence, Country, World Region?

I have an opportunity to develop a lot more EarthCaches but I'm somewhat reluctant since they are not as "quality" orientated. They just don't have that "Wow" factor or what a cool location.

I agree. I have done a lot of the EC's in Washington, while many are eduactional and have you think about the what you are seeing and may require more then a photo and reading a sign. There are only so many times I care to look at a glacial erratic before all the possible questions become copies of another EarthCache. Like wise I have done several recently that have IMO no educational value and are nothing more then lame virts. not what ECing was suposed to be and frankly I am shocked that they were ever published.

I would rather have fewer EarthCaches and truly have the educational factor rather then a more then are nothing more then a photo and read a sign.

  4. A situation to contemplate.

    ...

    What are you thoughts?

Proximity is a non issue for the cache expereince. Proximity is an issue as a courtesy to the owner.

If their cache has nothing to do with the EarthCache , I'd not even bother asking the cache owner. EarthCaches are their own thing and don't conflict with a regular cache.

If by chance the cache has something to do with the EarthCache I'd give the owner first right of refusal to place the EarthCache . If they don't wish to do so, I'd place it on my own.

Lastly, if the park is excited and wanted a cache, by gosh that's what it's all about. Place whatever the heck kind of cache they are thinking they want placed in as many locations and on as many sites as it takes to get them all listed.

Don't get me wrong here, I love the EarthCaches I have found, But place one on top of or within the my space of my cache and I will have your Earthcache archived, if I was to tell you no, myself I would not tell you no if you asked. But again a Earthcache Is part of Geocaching and falls under the cache saturation rule , with the exception given that you can ask the cache owner if he minds it being close to his. Over half the Earth caches I have placed are near other caches and all the cachers loved the idea. They knew it may bring more activity to their cache. If a cacher did tell you know, you would just have to deal with it. Push this to much and you might find EarthCaches heading down the same road as Virtuals. The "EarthCaches are their own thing" is true, yes! But, No! You still claim your smiles on the GeoCaching Site. Respect for all cachers and caches should be given. I have seen one EarthCache here in Hunsville get archived for placing, without asking a nearby cache owner, So it has been done.

Placing EarthCaches in a holeyer then though place, Thinking you can ignore all others is in my opinion, a bad road to try to go down.

Again try this "If their cache has nothing to do with the EarthCache , I'd not even bother asking the cache owner. EarthCaches are their own thing and don't conflict with a regular cache." near one of my caches and it will be archived faster then you wrote it up.

No, they don't, otherwise they wouldn't get published. GeoAware has indicated what the restrictions that the GSA and Groundspeak have developed.

  5. While on a Cache Machine, it was clear that a mower had eaten the ammo can. We found the rubber seal and some remnents of swag pieces. I broke out a large magnet on a pole I carry in case of nasty brush/ivy hides to see if any scape could be found. Didn't find anything but it turns out thats because a group earlier in the day had found some chunks of metal. They did bring the pieces and the logbook they found to the dinner event later in the day.

Hehehe Well we signed the log, so it was a find.

  6. We have the bandwidth (in fact you can load diagrams already through www.earthcache.org submital form)...

However, I feel we need a process. I think at this stage we will accept submissions of diagrams to EarthCache@geosociety.org. They must be original work and be made copyright free so any and all can use them. The submission must include your full name, address and telephone number.

We will check and approve diagrams for accuracy and relevance. Only those that met our standards for those will be accepted (the judges decisions will be final and no correspondence will be entered into) and then they will be posted onto the EarthCache website.

    How does that sound?

    sounds good!

  7. The Palm z22 might be a better choice because of the USB connection. Looks like you could get one for under $50 on eBay. I think the Palm z22 also has a backlight which might make it readable at night. The iiixe isn't readable at night without a flashlight or other light source.

I have a Vx and I just have to quickly press the power button once to turn on the backlight. Does the IIIxe not have this feature?

  8. I am a geocaching newbie and really enjoying it so far. I have read a little about paperless caching and would like to go that way. I have found several inexpensive Palm IIIxe"s on Ebay. My question is , is this pda compatible with Vista Home Premium? If not could someone recommend one that is? Thanks.

Based on the best info I have seen the Palm III line is not compatable with Vista.

  9. I guess I misunderstood the point of an earthcache then. When earthcache.org says "the formation of landscapes or to sites of interesting phenomena" they're only talking about the geology part of planetary science then? That seems a bit contradictory to me, but hey I'm new at this. How do sites like peatbogs make it onto the listings then?

Hey, maybe that could be a whole new caching category! Bio-sites

This is just a guess but I would say that it can be listed as peat is consitered a soil type. Much like diotamatious earth.

  10. From Engadget:

It looks like U.S. International Trade Commission judge Carl Charneski has managed to cause quite a stir in the GPS industry this month, with him first ruling earlier this month that chipmaker SiRF infringed on six of Broadcom's GPS patents, and him now recommending that the ITC issue an all out product import ban on products using the offending chips.

    What's Garmin stock doing today?

It just means that the SIRF III chip makers will have to liscence key patents, or do a tweak to their chip design. Garmin can use the redesigned chip, or someone elses chip.

This is only a problem if the patent holder decides their patent is the golden apple and tries to hold the world hostage.

which would just cause GPS manufacturers to use a slightly differend but similerly performing chip in their units. So no real effect.

  11. OK, it looks like there are four of us (Me, Blooming Idiot, Prying Pandora, AndrewRJ). Shall we say 7am at the East Valley Theater parking lot (approx. 47 26.650 122 13.150). I'm bringing three caches and caving gear (an extra helmet for PP included).

    Jester

I was going to pick up PP at the PnR a little further down the road at 7AM. If it is ok with you can we meet there.

The PnR is where this cache used to be

  12. Ideas for September's Hike of the Month:

    1. Sauer Mountain: This is a 6 mile hike with a 1700 foot elevation gain. The cache at the top is Sweet and Saeur To Go. There is also a cache at the trailhead called Sauer Rock and a multi about halfway up called Welcome Friends. From reading the logs it appears a few of the regular HOTM participants have already done this hike.

    2. Red Top Mountain: There is a new unfound cache near Red Top Lookout called Beyond The Red Top - A View Back. This is a shorter hike than Sauer Mountain, 2 miles RT with 350 foot elev. gain, but its a further drive (on the south side of Blewett Pass). The attraction here is the cache is located near the agate fields near Red Top Mountain Lookout, and nice views. Other caches in the vicinity are Red Top Mountain Lookout on the way up, and Day Treckin at the trailhead.

    3. Mission Peak: This 4 mile RT hike with 1000 foot elev. gain starts at the Liberty-Beehive Road and climbs up to Mission Peak, once the site of a lookout tower. There are 4 caches to be found on this hike: On Tudles Pond, Mission Peak Trail, Elk View, and A Beautiful View. I've already found these caches, but would go on the hike if selected for HOTM.

For September dates, I am unavailable the last 2 weekends of the month (Sep 20-21 and Sep 27-28).

So let me know your vote preferences in hikes (1, 2, or 3) and dates (Sep 6, 7, 13, or 14) either here or by email and I will announce the HOTM selection later.

Not sure if I could make it, but option 2 on either sunday fits best for me. (granted I am not one of the regulars so I should only get half a vote.)

  13. The REI in Seattle has carried the above, plus the Groundspeak 'branded' (with the sticker) Lock & Locks and Geocaching log books for at least a month now, as we were checking them out by the maps before we moved.

It'd be pretty groovy if they carried everything in the Groundspeak store!

Edit to note that we haven't seen them in the Redmond or Issaquah stores... wondering which REI you happened to see them in?

    This was the Redmond store.

Well I guess i have been out of the loop about the other stores then. I guess geocaching is truly mainstream now.

  14. I stopped by REI las night to pick up a new car charger for my GPS when I noticed official Groundspeak, geocaching fake rocks in the display case next to the GPS displays. ;)

While I was looking for the cable I found official Geocaching Large bisons capsuals.

I asked one of the employees there and he indicated that they just came in last week or so.

    Just FYI ;)

  15. I would be interested, this has been one I have wanted to do for a while, but I don't have breaks that work on my bike.

If you are willing to hike it I will go, but otherwise I am out.

You won't need them going in, only coming out. Or get them fixed today, it's still early!

Too many other things on my honneydo list just to get the free time. I will have to bow out... Have fun!

If you can get away, you're more than welcome to borrow my bike...

thanks for the offer, but I will just have to try some other day.

  17. The P&R is pretty busy, it fills up fast - but if we're just meeting and not leaving a vehicle, any place will do. And yes, I can give you a ride back home. And just think, if you're not driving you can nap on the way down... :)

Well, um, we will be leaving a car - mine - if I get a ride with someone. Unless Andrew is willing to pick me up at home, and someone gets me back there.

So...we need to leave at least one car - where to meet? How about the parking lot at the Lowe's off exit 5 (Sunset)? That's big and doesn't get full. Or the even bigger Fry's lot next to it.

    H

Why don't you just leave it at the PnR at exit 9? I can just swing off the freeway and pick you up.

  18. Ok I have a quick question. Are the ice caves you describe, rock walled? The reason I am courious is that the Big 4 Ice caves that are over on the wet side not only become sealed each winter, but the routs and passage ways rapidly change each year depending on where the water melts out. I could easily see the container being enveloped.

That said I obviously am concerned about the safty aspect as I had the misfortune of watching a lady get crushed to death at Big 4 about 8 years ago when one of the caves collapsed. :D

Either way I am glad to see that you have them appropriately marked as a 5/5, sounds interesting but I probibly won't attempt.

I've never heard of the Big 4 ice caves so I can't directly relate that these. The caves I'm talking about are all rock lined, have been around for about forever and are very stable.

Thats great, maybe this would be something to look at further. Thanks for the info.

Here is a link to the Big 4 Ice Caves for reference.

  19. I'm definitely driving - my van can hold 7 (2 spoken for - driver & wife :D ), we live south end of Renton (above Valley Medical Center). I know Prying Pandora is close by.

I don't mind getting an early start - depending on the the definition of early. This is a work day so we will have rush hour in Tacoma to deal with, depending on time. Though, Hwy 167 to 512 may skip most of that.

Where would be a good place to meet and join up?

I at least will be driving as well. I need to have to option of taking off early if needed. I can easily fit 3 in my truck. Hence the early start request. I know its early, but I was hoping to leave the eastside by 8 at the very latest. 7 or so would be better.

Any time between 7 - 8 works for me (that's hardly "early").

I have extra FRS radio's so we can stay in contact on the road, if anyone wants.

You are right, for me early is 5ish but I know that I get up far earlier then most. Lets do 7 then. I will hopefully remember my FRS.
