  1. Wow. Looks like I really have to plan my schedule out now with all the other events getting in the way. :D

The next hike planned (and I have the OK from Mrs TL to do this) is on Sunday, 4/26. Squak Mountain. 5 caches planned and will be bookmarked. Optional 6 if we want to go more than 11 miles roundtrip.

Crazy Monkey Tripod is the targeted cache. Dogs are welcome, cameras are encouraged. We may have some non-cachers with us.

    Details to follow soon.

Why would 38 candles be too many, unless it's a Cupcake?

Darn, I'll miss the Monkey because I'm the Cook that day.

I just noticed that April goes without a HOTM...Hmmm.

Anyone up for a Friday the 17th, 3 Night Caches and maybe a side trip or along the way Cache? ;)

There is a April HOTM planned.

I would love to do some night caches with a group again... But the date you have selected I will be driving out to the cache machine in the Quad Cities.

  2. What does this mean for existing Fizzy like challenge caches? Do we have to remove the requirement of finding all 81 diff/terrain ratings? If so, we might as well archive them.

A Fizzy Challenge meets the description in the new guidelines governing challenge caches. I look forward to finishing that someday myself. It is not affected.

A Challenge requiring the finder to take pictures of fifty different zoo animals would fare differently under the new test, at least if I were reviewing it.

"It is not affected" is not entirely correct. According to these guidelines, Fizzy challenge caches are most definately affected as follows:

    "QUOTE

Challenge caches incorporate special logging requirements and are listed as Mystery/Puzzle caches. Typically they require the seeker to have previously met a reasonable geocaching-related qualification (Waymarking and Wherigo qualify too, of course) such as first finding a cache in every county in your state. If you are thinking of creating such a cache, please include a note to the reviewer demonstrating either that you have met the challenge yourself, or that a substantial number of other geocachers would be able to do so."

If I read the above correctly, a Fizzy callenge by definition would be not be allowed because of its difficulty, "substantial number of other geocachers would be able to do so." (be able to complete the challenge). Also, the cache owner must have, "have met the challenge yourself" (has met the requirements that he has posted). Affected, yes but should be allowed, also yes! :)

Just out of couriosity, what is your personal definition of substantial. (reall vauge wording in my book)

I think that plenty of people could finish the fizzy challenge in my state, they may not want to but they could. I myself will probibly not finish the challenge but it would be relatively easy to do so compaired to some of the challenges I am working on.

  3. Then a cache requiring 50 5-star diff, and 50 5-star terr to log it appeared 3.1 miles away in one of the aforementioned parks! I currently have 6 5-star diffs, and 0 5-star terrs.

My reaction? I laughed, shrugged my shoulders, and was content that my "bubble" would have a nice hole in it for a long time. And guess what? I've started looking for caches I can find to MEET THE REQUIREMENT, no matter how long it takes. Why, because that's what the cache owner wants. Since that cache is not a "challenge" cache, should I go find it now, because I have the coords. No way.

That sure sounds like a Challenge Cache to me. Good luck with it and keep having fun!

WOW never move to that part of Cali. I would be drawn to and repulsed by that cache at the same time. ...Shudder...

  4.

I have been in geocaching for nearly seven years, and I have done most caches out there. If geocaching was the simple physical container and log and move on bit, I probably would've lasted only a couple years. Challenge caches offered me the chance to go out there in this big world and challenge myself to accomplish goals I never thought of trying. Of course, they will now be "suggestions" instead of "requirements", but what is the harm of having them be requirements? Because some idiot hides a dumb ALR cache, the banhammer has been put on the rest that were decent at the least!

I'm being over-dramatic, but I don't care. This stinks.

    You are also incorrect.

Challenge caches have not been banned.

  5. I agree that it should be unarchived, then adopted. When I did it with my dad, it seemed like it's harder at the beginning, then gets easier through the middle, then gets harder again at the end.

I spoke with Cruiser Guy today about this, he is around and fully aware of this discussion. I will not put words into his mouth but he is a bit irritated at how this played out.

  6. I did this cache when it was new, it was hard to see the glints then. I have the exact same problems with MtnMutt's night caches. There doesn't seem to be many glints and they are spread out. No one has asked that his caches SBA, not should they.

I am not giving MntMutt a hard time, just relating my experience. He and I have talked at my inability to find his night caches.

Sorry to hear that people can't find a cache, its there and I am sure that most of the glints are there. Hard to see sure, needing some maintience, yes, but needing to be archieved at the request of one of us using a sock pupet is deplorable. I am sad to see that one of us locals feels the need to hide that way and that is certainly not the first cache that they have requested in such a manner.

  7. Good Afternoon from Windy Washington State. I just got my GPS unit yesterday as a late birthday present from my sister! I am so excited to get started. I loaded a bunch of caches and was all set to head out today, but it is so windy and biting cold that it will have to wait unti another day, maybe tomorrow after work. I am exctited to be here. I have 2 caches under my belt.

    Blessings

    ~Jen~ :o

Join us over in the NW forum. What part of WA are you in? We are a friendly bunch and (most of us) don't bite.

Based on her 2 finds it looks like Sequim.

Welcolm to the addiction, stop by 'maus and pop in to meet a local. I am sure that Tolmaus will welcome you.

or join us in the NW forum, or the Washington State Geocaching Association

  8. When I enter the corrected coords for a solved puzzle, are the new coords preserved the next time I load that PQ? I want to get the new logs and status without losing my work!

    Yes, the coords are saved.

I use GSAK for my database and have about 1500 solved puzzles and multi finals. I have no problem keeping the modified data and loosing all that data would really suck.

  9. It seems to be all about the money for these types of API or web service interfaces. They def have something for their partners to pull in the data being requested in this thread. However, they are only going to make it available for those that are willing to pay a premium right now until they can find out how to make money off it otherwise.

I stopped caching last summer because it was becoming too tedious to pull up the website before i wanted to cache, download GPX files and then load them out in the field. Trimble is a great solution, but I'm sorry I'm not paying $40 a year for premium membership at GC.com and $4-6 for a mobile phone application that would require another $30/month data plan. I think many GC'ers are in the same boat with this one.

I would love to write my own app and make it available to others to load on my PDA phone with Wi-Fi built in that could pull in nearby caches or allow for logging notes, etc. I'm sure many would even approve of paying for a premium membership on this site in order for their application to use this API that supported the application. When I want to cache (or have time to cache) I want to go now. I don't have time to access this site and do my research first. Let me find a nearby cache and go! I'm still looking for a cheap solution to allow me to do this.

I think it is a shame Groundspeak doesn't see the value in creating an open API (or available to premium members only) that could support this type of software. Open access is only going to help increase the interest and availability to the GC community for the users of the software that results. They are not thinking two inches in front of their nose when thinking about their revenue stream.

Sounds like the Iphone app to me. Geocaching from your phone, one time price.

Not sure who is ripping you off, I and everyone else only pays $30 a year for premium membership.

  10. Huh, I kind of figured Wherigo would have caught on a little more than one cartridge in all of Seattle. I don't have a Wherigo-enabled GPS, so I haven't been paying attention, but is there something up with Wherigo cartridges/caches that makes people not want to create them?

Generally speaking.. they are difficult to program for the average person, I think it is coded in Lula.

A lot of the complaints I hear is that cartrages are buggy and crash, more on the Oregon then the Colorado, and while there were some updated to the builder last year, Garmin hasn't updated the player. This is what I heard and I may be wrong.

Personally I don't have a device that plays them and the builder seemed very unintuitive when I played around with it. YMMV.

  11. Hmmm...

Well I was going to go for a hike on the other side of the mountains on the 21st and then the GPS maze on the 28th.

So I am planning on doing 1000 Finds for Mahawking on Saturday the 14th. Anyone is free to join me.

    We could also get

    Cherry Cache II

    On the Way #2

Hoagy’s Walkabout or at least parts of it

    Icha-No-Bod Crane

and Double Shot possible will be gone soon due to the building of a new fire station.

    Is this a bikable route?

Most of it, I know that Evergreenhiker! says its bikeable to Cherry Cache 2 and then you continue up the road for a while before bushwacking to 1000 Finds.

I'm in. If you want I can borrow the SIL's bike again.

    Time & place??

    Sure, that would be fine.

I think that we can meet at Double Shot. There is a wide spot for several vehicals at the Intersection.

    8AM I was thinking.

  12. OK, you got me. It is intentional so they can suck more money out of you.

    :)

Um, if it *was* intentional, don't you think there would be some actual content in that window? :o

Not going to make a whole boatload of money with no actual sponsored links now are we!

I'm not giving or taking away credit for the ability to actually implement something, I'm stating the timing, and that point can't be argued. I have yet to see ANY evidence of any other site having this same issue. Show me one, and I withdraw my comments.

This is about time lines, not programming ability.

The odd thing is I can't get this to happen to me using Firefox, or IE. I have tried multiple computers and tried logging in and out, yet I never get the box to appear. Seems like a more intermittent problem to me.

I'd love to go, but Saturday is the WSGA-PS chapter meeting, which I'm hosting. Darn! I'm free Sunday, tho... []

Yea I know, I plan on being there with Amy and Riley. We will see how the timing works out.

  15. Yes. Permission is an absolute must.

EarthCaches that are submitted without permission information are rejected. EC that are submitted with misleading or false information are treated very seriously indeed with potentially serious consequences for the developer.

    That was my understanding.

The listing in question seems like a virtual in disguise. (not that I haven't seen many others that would fall under the same category)

    How should I proceed?

Not sure about the permission issue but I can think of a few around here that are virts in disguise as well. Kinda sad to see them as they show a serious lack of quality.

  16. That made me look at something.

Try looking at the north wall of the red brick building at 16310 Cleveland Street, Redmond Washington. Its the building on the south east corner of the intersection and its called the Matador.

There are two black doors on the north face of the building with a window between them. If you look below the east edge of the window you can just make out the disk mounted vertically in the brick work.

  17. The new version of Google Earth is amazing, this was probably available in the past as well. Using the street view portion of Google Earth I just viewed an Astronomic Station placed in 1892 in Tacoma Washington.

Type "82 S G St" into your "Fly To" box and then go into the photo view and look Southwesterly and you can clearly see Tacoma Astronomic - SY2718.

You can get the imbed code to your website, but I could not get it to view here.

I am heading to the airport soon and will be going on the ground to recover this station, but was amazed to be able to see a photograph of it in Google Earth.

    Soon to be in Tacoma,

    Kurt

How long are you going to be out here? Asks someone from the greater Seattle area?

  18. I was tracking you today as I was able. I guess the way I was looking at it, if something went wrong I would have had a fairly good place to start looking, it seems like it would really narrow the circle for search and rescue.

How often was it supposed to register?

  19. I saw in another post where people just open a separate GSAK database to store a set of caches instead of using a bookmark. But the advantage of using the bookmark is that I can rename the cache with a number in front to designate what order I want to do the finds. Is there a way to do that in GSAK?

My question about GSAK still stands...is there a way to put them in order in GSAK so you know what order you want to find them?

Yes there is, I do it all the time for Cache Machines. Although it appears the USort column mentioned above will do the same thing (that's new to me but I'm going to investigate it), here's how I do it.

If you haven't yet, turn the column named User Data on so it appears. That is in Tools-Options-Display.

Enter your numbers in that field. If you have more than 10, make sure you add a leading zero...and if you have more than 100, add leading zeros to everything below 100. For example 05, 005, 075, etc.

If you only want numbered caches, your filter can be as simple as setting the User Data box to Is Not Empty.

When you do your Send to GPSr, put this in the Waypoint Name field: %user. I use Smart Names, so mine is %user %smart, if you use GC code, it would be %user %code.

The name of the cache when sent to the GPSr will be "005 CacheName Here" and all you have to do is sort by name.

So what happens when there is no data in the User Data field? If it doesn't take any extra spaces I may just add that to the macro I use so that I can add the cache machine caches with the rest of them.
