Just had to go over to Ellensburg for work today. Snow was out of the trees far above the tunnel and I couldn't see any signs of snow on the ground at that elevation either.

I just want to add that Plan B is a good plan, just trying to find other options for you, not saying I wouldn't want to do the other hike.

Greg, I think I've mentioned the gold-themed caches here to you. There's a series of them on a trail up here. Problem is, it's way up here. I'm considering an event before or after a hike to get the caches near GC23Y4E (I don't have trail maps, but I'm sure I could find some) I've been looking forward to getting up there, but want to have company. I'm sure a lot of BCers would attend, so think about combining a HOTM with an event. I may even have the perfect place for a repeat of the spud-fest in January...that was a hit, I think.

Are those the ones that head up the west side of Sumas Mountain?
I was just looking at that area along with the trail that runs up Stewart further west.

I'm trying to keep an earlier promise for something south of Olympia but I keep running into too far south or too short of a hike. So it's taking me longer than usual.
I tripped across this one but it's all service road to the top so I'm reserving this for plan B if I don't come up with something by Saturday.
I'm looking around for Plan A for a trail hike. I'm open to suggestions as long as we get out of the Snoqualmie/Stevens rut and try to push a little more west so others in the outlying areas can join in on a hike.
Really not sure what the snow level is but this area has been looking good for a while
Check out the area around

hmmm maybe not, a trail report from the general area says 2 feet of snow at 4400 feet.
There is also Sugerloaf and Mt McDonald near Kanasket Palmer. MD is 3300 but all logging road.

What do you have plan to have set up?

Uuuh, PN? Did I miss something? Anyhow, I grabbed my DeLorme map a few months ago and just plotted all of the WA History caches out and had a blast doing it, pinpointing where the caches are at was a blast as long as I had a pot of coffee going. I also have been working on plotting out all of the caches on my Bucket List bookmark as well as adding notes on my bookmark lists that show where on the map page the cache is at like 27 A10 or 33 C6. If for some reason a cache gets archived I just pull it out and erase it. Anyhow, just my $.02.
PN is shorthand for the Delorme GPS.
The model numbers are the PN-20, PN-40 and the new PN-60

Compare OSM vs Google... Move the transparency slider and see.
I think OSM would be a big + for many countries where Google has almost nothing. And for many regions where Google has maps, the OSM maps can offer more. So to have the possibility to switch would be excellent.
That was very interesting to play with. I was suprised at the differences along the main roads in my town. Very rough on the OSM but navicable. It makes me want to drive around my town for a few hours and fix them.

I just looked at Super8 on Google Street View Maps. There's an active RR right behind the hotel . Hope they have well-insulated walls.
It wasn't an issue when I stayed there a few years ago.

I am out... I can only do one hike this weekend and the distance is too far. GRRR Maybe Dudley and I can hit this some other day.
-
Sounds like fun but I would have to see if I could get the hall pass for that day.

strong maybe at this point

I'm considering this cache for the next snowshoe hike. Because the three day weekend also falls on Valentine's day, I don't dare use it, so I must choose between Coinapalooza and a Sequim event weekend. I'm thinking of 2/20. This is a difficult hike based on 6.5 miles RT with 3,500 feet elevation gain on the way in.
Has the road in been reopened? According to Ruck's log it looked like the hike may be about 9 miles.

The Pallisades Trail above Snoquerra Falls off of 410 outside of Greenwater. We were chasing after The Hiker's Choice 2 and Rolling Thunder 4
Ahh the snowshoe hike that wasn't

Be willing to give a How To on that one?
yes, but my english is not so good, maybe I will make some picture description
Don't worry about your English, we'll figure it out. Some pictures and some text would be fine. That is one neat cryptex.
Seconded. Use your native language. Someone around here will translate I'm sure.
It looks like you did a fine job.
I don´t made new Cryptex, for photos I used some old spares. If somebody knows better text, find some mistakes,or if you have any question, plese send me email - hydrous @ hydrous.cz click for cryptex Sorry about my english ;-)
Your english was more then sufficient. Very nice and simple design! Thank you so much.

Anacortes has implemented a new Geocaching Policy and Permit that applies to all city parks and Anacortes Community Forest Lands (ACFL).
According to the site: "With the passage of the new Anacortes Community Forest Lands Comprehensive Plan, geocachers are now asked to fill out a permit to cache in the ACFL. The permit and accompanying regulations were modeled after those used in state parks and are meant to encourage geocaching and stewardship of the environment. Two of largest changes are the requirement to use micro caches in the ACFL and the rule that geocachers need to stay on trails."
The Anacortes policy is more restrictive than that of WA State Parks. Cache size is limited to micro and small (max 4''x4''x4"). Caches can't be placed off-trail on ACFL land, and there's no provision for renewing the permit after one year. A map of the affected city parks is located on the last page of the Comprehensive Development plan.
Thanks to Jimmerbowl, who has been working with ACFL to reach a solution on geocaching on their lands, and to Rey del Roble, who also has been involved.
I am going to assume that the quote is a typo and they actually mean that you need a permit to place a cache, not to actually go caching.
I also have to laugh that they are completely at cross purposes as they only allow the size types most likely to cause significant environmental degradation by having to examine every tiny place, and in the most visible possible spots by not allowing anything off trail. But at least it isn't banned so that is great.

The unit looks interesting, but the shelling out an initial $800 plus bucks and $200 a year after than seems slightly steep. Looks like some nice improvements though. About the only feature lacking that I'd really like to see would be some means of two way communication, or at least having the unit at least let you know that the message was received.
When I first heard of this possible unit, I didn't visualize two seperate units. The way the spot subscription service works, that's probably a plus, and I can see both good and bad points to the combination. I wonder if the Spot device offers at least as much functionality as the spot II when used as a stand alone device. It will be interesting to see.
Finally, while I doubt they'd go for it, I wonder if I could talk them into sending me the new Delorme version of the spot when I send in my Spot II for the recall replacement. I can't imagine why I'd want two units, and if I already had the spot portion of the combination I'd only have to spring for the GPS part. I suppose while I'm dreaming, isn't the powerball lottery getting up there right now.....
I am not sure where you got the $800 from. The 60W comes with the spot receiver at the $550 price point.
Sorry about the price point documentation. I got then from a blog I frequent and the blogger was at the consumer electronics show. I just did a quick cut and paste.
edit for clarification

PN-60w: $449,
SPOT Communicator: $169,
PN-60w and SPOT Communicator: $549.

Anyone been able to find any real specs on this one?

Alright, another stupid question. Do I need a parking permit at the parking area for the hike Saturday?
Anyone have a lake topo map of Eloika lake in WA?

Just to answer the question, The NW Trails Project is run by Groundspeak's very own Moun10bike.
Totally as a side project and in no way affiliated with Groundspeak other then he works there.
