  1. Why don't they implement a system similar to travel bugs where upon finding the actual cache you must write a distinct code that would either accept or reject your log post similar to posting a trackable!!

This would guarantee people actually do visit the cache

At this point I could pretend to have found a cache and post a log

That would guarantee I log the same caches as my friends who had conveniently copied down the code for me.

  2. Condoms

I had a tonne of condoms left over from the sex ed sessions held in my classroom. I thought - hey great swag. But then I thought - if you trust birth control left in a cache, you deserve what you get.

So now what do I do with them?

    :laughing::laughing:

I put a bunch of condoms a nice glass vase in my bedroom. They look pretty and I can add to or take from it as desired.

Sounds quite decorative. It is always nice to make the place pretty when you are entertaining.

  4. How many of you keep geocaching a secret? Maybe because it's super nerdy and you don't want people to know, or maybe you just got sick of explaining it. Personally I keep it to myself mostly, I go hiking a lot anyway so this is kind of an added bonus. Let's hear your stories!

If I had have kept it a secret, I would not have gotten a rousing round of applause from my students for arriving slightly disheveled one morning after four FTFs.

But I'm a math teacher. My nerdiness is more than assumed.

  5. You should at least carry some pepper spray if you can legally do so. Never know what kind of persons you will run into both on the street or wilderness.

Personally I carry I firearm, and I dont understand why you are grateful for not living i the USA

Well if you are allowed to carry a gun, doesn't it mean the person you might run into is allowed to as well? Yikes! No wonder you guys in America all need to run around armed.

I carry bug spray (as well as pens, tweezers, swag etc) And sunscreen in the summer. And I make a lot of noise in case of bears. Quite an interesting contrast!

  6.

Never carry a firearm in a bag, its to easy for someone to grab carry your firearm on your person.

Never thought I'd say this but thankfully I dont live in the USA! One place I wont be visiting ant time soon.

Was thinking the same thing! Putting a WEAPON in my caching bag never crossed my mind.

  7. When your 5 year old son sees a black box behind the bushes as you enter the mall and says "geocache"! (when really it is a mouse trap) and then later when walking through a parking lot with shrubs and pinestraw in the medians he says "this would be a good place to hide a cache" and you you were thinking the same thing...

My five year old says this all the time. I'm bringing him up just right. :)

  8. I was sitting on the famous Grassy Knoll Virtual Cache (GC3710) and it hit me, why not make a new cache type, one for Historical Caches.

Groundspeak stated Virtuals were taken off the field due Waymarking and to remove caches without a container. At the Grassy Knoll there were at least 4 other waymarks within feet of each other...all going against the common sense of the .1 mile rule. I know the adventures are not all about numbers, but about quality for most, so how about making a cache type for all those places containers cannot go.

Groundspeak would have the option to be creative and create a cool icon, like the Liberty Bell, Statue of Liberty, etc. As long as something can be verified of historical significance it would be legit and the numbers will count towards your Cache totals at the same time. An Earthcache, but for remembering history?

    Your thoughts?

Please do not lock this down, let us see what others really think?

    Keep on Cachin!

Wow. Even this idea has history.

How about a new post icon for historical forum topics?

  9. I've come across a few like this that are either "liar's caches" - "demanding" you write a GOOD story that isnt true, or caches that require you to post a picture.

My response has been to write the story, but to be very creative with my use of capitals - which to the astute reader tells the story of what I really think.

And nO, theRe's no ceatIve uSe of inapprorpriaTe capitalization HERE.

Not exactly subtle is it? LOL

OMG Chewy - I am so going to go and read your logs now!:(

  10. I guess the GPSr was free too?

There is nothing free about this hobby! I even bought a car because of geocaching! ;)

    $30 a year is nothing.

I completely agree with all of the opinions. I think it is a moneygrab by Groundspeak. My wife and I got into this hobby as a FREE way to get outside with the kids. I really think having to pay to see some caches kinda goes against what caching was started for, in my eyes. I am just a newbie with less than a year in, but we've found over 300 regular caches and are kinda running out in our local area.

  11. Hey all, can someone point me in the direction of some information on night caches? And I don't mean SLs that are in a 24/7 lit parking lot. I mean flashlights and fire tacks type caches. I really want to find a few and I would like to hide one too. But when I search for them, I turn up all these with the night attribute that are just regular caches that can be done after the sun goes down. Anybody know where to go to get more info?

    Got links to caches?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Are you planning to come to Vancouver, BC soon? There are 6 I can think of here.

  12. I've been giving a lot of thought to issues related to caches put out by brand new cachers. There can be (obviously not always) problems with coordinates being wrong, containers being the wrong size and the terrain/difficulty numbers being way too high. I've proposed an idea to several of my caching friends that Groundspeak consider limiting the ability to hide new caches to cachers that have found more than 100 hides. Since they have universally said they thought it was a good idea I thought I would bring it up here. This is in no means a slap at brand new cachers. I just think we need to afford them the time to familiarize themselves with different hide styles, containers and various terrain/difficulty numbers before putting out new caches. I'm sure there are exceptions to every rule and this is just my opinion based on my experiences in the field. As as more experienced cacher I have made my fair share of mistakes when posting new caches. I do wonder though what kind of affect this would have on the game. Perhaps the 100 cache milestone (or some other arbitrary number) shows a dedication to the game that would ensure long term cache maintenance? Thoughts?

How about you chose not to find caches placed by cachers with less than 100 finds?
