    Camp Muir!

When you get to be 88, about all you have to brag about is your grandchildren. This is a quote from the Alaska Mountaineering School == " AMS Guide Leighan Falley's Team called in from 14,200' camp. They did reach the top of North America and are making their way down at an enjoyable, easy pace. All is well with them and we look forward to seeing them tomorrow." Our son Tom met his wife when both of them were guides on Mt. Rainer, Leighan is their first born and is now married to a Climbing Ranger for Denali National Park. They gave us a great grand daughter last August on my wife, Arlene's birthday. Leighan is also an artist and commercial pilot. What does this have to do with geocaching, nothing but we did get our 8,000 find near Hood River Saturday. Dick & Arlene
  2. Way to go Jim. The big 10 K. not far away
  3. Back in August of 2001 I had a Garmin 45 and just happen to notice a mention of Geocaching on a Sony camera forum. I went to the Geocaching site and looked at caches. There was one just about 1 mile north of my home. I loaded the coordinates in my Garmin 45, hopped on my scooter and rode up to the forest the cache was hiddenin. Lost signal on the 45 as soon as I went into the woods. Picked up a Maggy 235, I think it was and found the cache. The cache is still there and active. Dick, W7WT
  4. I am a year older than my last post. I am now 88 and the wife is 86. We found around 477 caches in April so we do what we can do. Dick & Arlene
  5. We recently drove up the Wilson River Road in Western Oregon and nearly ever cache was a 5 gallon Bucket. This was thru a heavy forested area and after all the micro and nano finds it was a real joy finding the LARGE containers.
  6. Last year there was a Event held at the City of Bremerton Yacht Basin (very nice) only about 10 miles across the sound from Downtown Seattle. It included a trip on two old tall ships complete with cannons. Jeremy and his family attended this event. He said his son really enjoyed shooting the cannon. I just happen to see him when he first got there and had my picture taken with him. I now wished I had asked him "How many charter members are left", as I have been wondering for a long time. I just thanked him for starting Geocaching. I had open heart surgery a couple of years ago and the wife had a stroke. i also lost three tendons attached to my rotocuff a few years back and had to give up most of my hobbies so geocaching is about all we are able to do. I will be 88 in April and the wife will be 87 in August and geocaching is our life. Dick
  7. I have been wondering for some time just how many Charter members were still around. I am also a WWII Navy Vet and I know their number is dropping fast. I would have thought it would be a larger number than 95. Thanks Dick, W7WT Bremerton, WA
  8. Bring up GSAK and on the GSAK page the version is given on the very upper left. Mine say GSAK 7.74.36 i don't have the Etrex 20 but you should be able to use the SEND TO GPS on the cache page after you download the driver to send to your connected GPS for individual caches. You should also be able to connect the Etrex to your computer and go to Computer and drag and drop the PQ into the Garmin GPX file. I just use GSAK to load all my GPSs so someone will probably give you better directions.
  9. Welcome to Geocaching. We live in Bremerton and usually visit Battleground a couple times of a year. Great caches around there. The Etrex 20 is not listed on GSAK 7-7 that we use but i understand that GSAK 8 does list it. Once you have the PQ loaded on GSAK got to GPS at the top of the page. Then setup and then select Etrex 20 then go to Send to GPS. Be sure you have the GPS connected to the computer. The Etrex is too new for the GSAK 7 if that is what you are using. Good luck
  10. We have two Garmin Nuvi 550 only used in the car. We use our 60CSx's for the hunt. I just checked and Amazon has the Nuvi 550 for sale at $299.90. I never checked the Nuvi 500. Easy to load PQ with GSAK. Very easy to use. Sorry, I just read you don't want to use GSAK. I use GSAK to load all of our GPSs and haven't tried to just drop the PQ into the file, but sure it would work.
  11. I also use GSAK 7.7 and use it to load my two 60CSx, Two Nuvi 550 and Montana 650. I just go to GPS on the top of the GSAK listing and then select the model I want to load caches to and then send them. Strange that it doen't list any of the Etrex 10, 20 or 30 but does list the Montana's. Just noticed you joined two days before I did "Old Timer".
  12. Thank you. I agree it would be important. Dick & Arlene
  13. We use a bobby pin with about 1/8 inch cut off the bottom. Works great. I always carry one in my little change purse.
  14. PARTNERSHIP Attribute, OK first I have heard of it. What is it? And what does it do thatis important in geocaching. My partner and I would like to know. Thanks
  15. We got our discovery pass yesterday. Looking forward to doing this challenge. Dick & Arlene
  16. Looks like you are going to have a great vacation. I looked at our milestones and most were not that exciting. The ones that stand out for me were. GC346 Key Penisula Cache my fifth find. i was so excited because I found three caches that day. GCHPJ9 Liberty Bay Cache Did with Bruce Ajetpilot for our 600th Used my small boat to get to it. GC1221 Half Moon Cache Also with Bruce for our 700th. Best cache of all GC8 Mountain Marsh Bruce and I drove down just to get it. Fun Cach GC39 Mingo Drove to Illinois to visit relatives and came back and was able get it for our 1,300th GCHNKC Silent Watchers of the Wallue River on our 60 Wedding Anv on Kauai for our 2,000th The rest of our milestones are just what happen to come up. Our 7,000th was just a rubber duck here in kitsp County
  17. We have had Cache Machines along with an Event Dinner here in the NW. Well over 100 out of town cachers attending. The route is laid out and the OC of the Event will request any of the cache owners on the route if they would like to OP OUT, then he will remove them from the route. Seems to work very well.
  18. Does anyone know how many Charter Members there are. We will soon be 88 and counting down.
  19. I have a son who flies 747-400 and 747-8 cargo planes for Atlas Air Cargo. He lives in Alaska but has gone geocaching with us when visiting. He flies all over the world but I have never asked him to find caches for our team. On the other hand our daughter who also caches with us went to NZ and found 3 caches and logged them under our W7WT account. So we did get NZ without all of our team there.
  20. I use a 2008 Microsoft Streets & Trips. I load the caches to it from GSAK as well as to all of my GSPs. Once they are shown on the map you may right click on the cache icon and have the choice to add name. It is limited but useful. I print out several on a page to help keep us oriented on where we are. I am not sure if the latest version will do that or not.
  21. We now have 6,639 finds and going on a overnight cache trip this Thursday. No snow in the Puget Sound lowlands so we should meet our goal of 7,000 by the end of the year. Our long (or short) range is to get to 10,000 before kicking the bucket. We just do what we can do. today is December 31,2012 and We have 6,993 caches so we fell short of the 7,000 we had hope to get. No biggy we will be caching in a few more days and will then get our 7,000 th find.
  22. I have a virtual "High on a Windy Hill" at Hurricane Ridge in the Olympic National Park and have one DNF log from a cacher that forgot to bring the cache descripton with the info needed to log the cache. So he logged a DNF
  23. Two years ago I had open heart surgery and the wife had a stroke, So we didn't do much in 2011. I am 87 and my wife Arlene is 86. This year we have found over 2000 caches and should get to 7,000 finds. Our goal is to get 10k before we kick the bucket. dick & arlene Bremerton, WA
