  1. I would never move a cache to far from it's location. ALthough if the cache is setting out in plain site I find it acceptable to tuck it under some brush to prevent muggling (i wonder if thats the correct term?...)
  2. I like my lowrance iFinder brand just as well as any other brand.
  3. I'm a leader in a local boy scout troop. I have taken the troop geocaching before but I need a new idea for our next campout where there are no geocaches. I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas on gps related activities that could be done with boy scouts. The best thing I could come up with is just having the scouts map a trail with the gps. Help please!!!!
  4. Actually, now that I actually loked at lostoutdoors, it is the exact same image on terraserver. I guess the lostoutdoors puts a marker where the cache is so that makes it easier. What I've been doing for a while is lining up topozone and the terraserver maps to get a mark on the terraserver. Well now I know better...
  5. Usually I use combonations of terraserver, topo zone, and google earth to help me figure out the general area of the cache. This way when you take the GPS out you can atlest know if you're in the right area or not.
  6. Like it says on the website, a GPs is supposed to work fine in any weather conditions. I use a Lowrance iFinder and I've never had a problem with cloud cover with that. It wouldnt hurt at all to give your GPS more time to find the satellites either.
  7. I found a cache in Cancun Mexico over the summer. It was interesting since I never would have made to the ruins the cache was in w/o the cache.
  8. IF you really don't want to continue paying for cell phone each month your best bet might be to bring a buddy along. IF either one of you get hurt the other can go get help.
  9. There's a cache in my area (Iron Lilac) that seems to be the same thing that you're doing. This one is listed as a multi cache.
  10. I like to think I'm good at using some of the maps provided on the cache page to help find the cache. Sometimes if I have a bad connection I have nearly as good of luck using paper maps and a compass.
  11. I don't like to put a list of objects in my caches on my cache page. I think it makes the page looks cluttered. Also kinda annoying reading through a on of random objects. It would be a good ideqa if you have a ftf item to post that but I would take it off a little while after someone gets it.
  12. The one problem I can see with this idea instead of the obvious is that different bibles aren't printed with the exact same words. If you have them reading somewhere in the text of the bible it wouldn't work.
  13. I have some relatives out here for thanksgiving. Probably going to be takeing them caching in the next day or two. Always a good activity on a boring day.
  14. If you have any idea who placed the cache you can look up their profile and go to userstats. It shows all caches that have been placed including archived ones.
  15. I use a little more of a lesser known GPS, a Lowrance iFinder. Comes with a built in map thats fairly accurate, also if you pitch in a little extra money you can get mapping software for your computer. The GPS comes with a 16mb memory card. I tend to get good reception with it. The only problem is that it's not waterproof at all but it does come with a waterproof aqua bag.
  16. I need some help with downloading waypoints off of cache pages. I know how to download the actually waypoint in the LOC file format. The problem is my GPS (Lowrance iFinder) nor my mapping software (MapCreate 6) will accept that file format. The one file format I know that it will take is a USR file. Not sure if any other work. I need help converting the LOC to a USR file or another format like that. Any ideas?
  17. The best example I can think of is using Google Earth. Its a free download from earth.google.com and its basically aerial maps of the whole world. After you download this go to the "my account" page and click "Download Geocache browser in Google Earth " and make sure you save it. Then when you open google earth it should appear as an option on the left side of the screen that you can click on and off. It positions all geocaches as a marker with the name and other cache details on the map. Its a very good resource.
  18. Not sure how well this would work but you could do something with reading types of maps. On cache pages if you click on the topo-zone link it shows you exactly where that cache is on a topographical map. You might be able to weave that in to other types of maps too.
  19. I'm currently a Boy Scout in Omaha NE. I plan on receiving my Eagle sometime this spring and I think Boy Scouts and geocaching have many parallels. One of my Troop's favorite things to do is run around in the woods. And many of the younger kids couldn't be more estatic when I say that we will be finding a geocache in the area of our campsite. Geocaching also allows scouts to study maps of the area and things like that. This past year, the summer camp my troop goes to (Camp Geiger, Pony Express Council St. Joe Missourri) actually started a geocaching propgram in the camp. There are 10 caches in the camp boundaries and if you found 7 you got a special patch. Kinda interesting that caching has even caught on at summer camp
  20. ... If you ended up on the wrong side of the Mississippi you would feel comfortable crossing it by walking across a log.
  21. I've found that it's pretty hard to go wrong with an ammo box. They have a very tight seal. The one cache I placed without an ammo box turned up wet.
  22. First off, I don't consider myself new to caching. I've been in the sport for a few years and have placed a couple of caches. I need some help with my latest one. I placed it over a month ago and no one has logged a find and only one person has logged a no find. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions that I might be able to add to the cache page to get people to the cache. The cache name is "Evan's Streamside Geocache II" (GCQPEN) and the url is: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...4c-e05c9b776552 Thanks!
