My wife ordered me one of these new Garmin 60CS things for Christmas. I don't know why, I've had two other GPS's (an early Garmin - I think it used 3 channels) and a newer 3+ or 2+ - and I never figured out what to do with them. I gave the first one away, the newer one sits in it's box in a closet.
Moving on...I notice that this 60CS can have maps downloaded to it. I'd really like to learn how to use this one. What map programs should I get? Are there a lot of options? Garmin sells a bunch of them, is it best to buy from Garmin since the GPS is from Garmin?
I read it comes with something called a "basemap". What is this?
I spend a lot of my time in the woods, if this thing could display topo maps it would be useful to me. Does anyone know if they can zoom in and out on the map being displayed? How much of a map will this one hold (it's got 56bm of memory), but not knowing how big a map is I have no idea how much of one fits.
Does it take roadmaps too? Is there a good roadmap I should be looking into?
Given she'd hinted at ordering one of these, I wandered into an REI store a couple of weeks ago and tried to find answers to some of these questions. I had no luck, the fellow working there said they didn't work inside and he couldn't show me any of the mapping stuff.
thanks for your help....Hank
