  1. I use TOPO here in the Idaho Panhandle and it compares pretty well to the USGS 7.5 min. topo maps I have.
  2. I have one, and the short answer is it's great. There are a couple of threads here that discuss this in some depth - I'd suggest using the search function to find them.
  3. I got the 76CS - it fits in my shirt pocket. Color adds so much to these devices you shouldn't pass it up.
  4. Thanks! I'll try these waypoints this week - there is an area near here I'd like to explore a bit.
  5. This weekend I drove from N. Idaho to Independence, Or. and used my new 76CS. I loaded up all the topo maps for the route, and using Mapsource on my computer marked off a route on the maps. I'm not sure this was required. Using the GPS I hit "Find" and entered my destination and entered "go to" and it put a little car on the screen while I guess it was making a route. It then gave me turn by turn directions while driving - the thing is amazing. I had one problem where it froze up, none of the buttons worked so I powered it off and back on and the routing stuff was gone. It was easy enough to enter it again. My questions are 1. Did I have to select and download all those topo maps? or was it doing the routing from the basemap? 2. Can it route to someplace not in the find menu? Say I want to go to a mountain here in Idaho - can I get it to do a route to it? How do you do this? I'm new at this, my last GPS was a II+ - this one does a LOT more. thanks...
  6. You might want to take a look at Amazon - I found my SW cheaper there than on Ebay's den of theives.
  7. Us 5 Camp - thanks a lot for that link to Gilsson Technologies. They have very good prices.
  8. I like mine, I'm sure I'll like it more once I figure out how to use it. Regarding the size between the 76CS and 60CS, the 76CS is .1 (one tenth) of an inch longer, .3 wider and .1 deeper. That's not a big size increase, considering it has twice the memory. It easily fits in my shirt pocket. I wish it had the ability to be switched into portrait mode. I liked that with my old GPS II+.
  9. So if I were to order City Select now, I could upgrade to V6 at no cost?
  10. I looked at both and got the 76CS. The additional memory for about $35 couldn't be passed up. It fits in my shirt pocket and I haven't had any trouble using the buttons, they're postioned right for me and I have small hands.
  11. I got this note Garmin is pleased to announce that new software is available for the GPSMAP 76CS. The new software is: GPSMAP 76CS Ver. 3.40 You can download the new software from our website by clicking the following link: http://www.garmin.com/support/collection.j...ct=010-00353-00 When I tried to get the SW it wasn't there.
  12. The color display on my 76cs is very readable - color makes a huge difference to my old eyes.
  13. I looked for this and didn't see it posted. http://www.gpsdrawing.com/gallery.htm
  14. I had a 60 on order, then they announced the 76 - the additional memory is what sold me. Ergonomics of the 76 are great for me, I can easily stick in my jeans pocket , and when I do I appreciate having the buttons on top. I haven't fooled around with the geocaching icons on it, but they look the same as the 60 I fooled around in a local store. I've read it's the same SW on both units.
  15. Miine has lost satelite lock a few times under light tree cover, in places I wouldn't have thought it would go away. One plus is it recovers fast.
  16. US 5 Camp - Thanks a LOT! I'm really technology challenged, and this new GPS is testing my limits. I fooled around with map settings and seemed to get the topo maps working. At least it looks drastically different when I turn on them vs. having them off. Thanks again!
  17. Here a page of someone who took a GPS-V apart and attempted some modifications. It's nicely detailed with excellent photos. http://www.elsinga.net/index.html?page=gps5faq Scroll down and click on "What is inside the GPS V case?" I'm still having lots of trouble with Mapsource on the 76CS. I believe the maps are downloaded - this am I put 43 of the Topo maps on it, most of Idaho. When I go the GPS I and select "Maps" I only see one - a map located somewhere in the middle of the long list I believe I moved to the GPS. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? thanks...
  18. I think I downloaded some Mapsource Topo maps into the GPS, but I'm not sure if I'm seeing them on the GPS. Should the maps on the GPS look like the maps I see on my PC? Mine don't. When I saved them to the GPS it looked like it was doing something and said they were transferred. I found this in an old 60cs post From the map page hit the "MENU" button and select "Setup Map" Move to the fourth of the five icons (the "i" with the circle around it) and hit "MENU" This will give you a list of options something like: Show All Show None Hide Basemap Restore Defaults Restore All Map Defaults Show US City Select Show US Topo but on my 76 when I do the above I never see "show US Topo" as an option. Anyone know how to make the maps appear on the GPS? thanks...
  19. Brown just dropped mine off. Got it on and it got satellites, no problem. I think I downloaded the new firmware into it (don't know how to check it), and I might have downloaded the Idaho Panhandle from Mapsource. When I zoom in, I've got things that look like a topo map - without much detail. IMy last Garmin was a II+, so I have a pretty steep learning hill to climb with this one. I might be asking a BUNCH of dumb questions, so please bear with me. like the ergonomics, button placement is excellent for me. It's really, really fast compared to the old II+ - the difference is like night and day. thanks for all your help in picking this one...Rich
  20. I don't have mine yet, but when I changed the order from the 60 to the 76 I called Garmin and was told the new 76C/CS will have a serial port.
  21. Looks like Garmin has an update for the 76CS. http://www.garmin.com/support/download_det...353-00#Instruct fixes Corrected problems finding items when results contain characters with diacritic marks. Corrected a problem on the Geocache Find page where a Find By Name search could potentially highlight a point past the first correct match. Corrected an orientation problem on the Turn Preview page if the route is calculated close to the first turn. Corrected problems with the automatic closing feature of the Turn Preview page when using German or Italian languages. Corrected potential problems resulting from automatic closing of the keyboard. Corrected potential problem where invalid characters could be entered into a waypoint comment. Corrected potential display problems on the Altimeter page barometer plot view. Corrected contour line colors to increase visibility.
  22. I'm pretty sure Garmin posted the manuals for the 60 series the day they started shipping. Still no manuals available for the 76's at the Garmin website.
  23. Mine wil be here on the 21st. Saw a post from TVNAV that they were going to get enough in on Wed. to fill all their pre-orders.
  24. Good news - mine is shipping today too! I wouldn't have thought of calling them if I hadn't seen US 5 Camp's post. Thanks!
