  1. Where am I?

    54640121-bc93-4325-b9c8-fa25034f7d65.jpg

New kind of light house on the west coast?

Not West coast. Not any coast in fact.

Looks to me like somewhere in the Limpopo province, but really not sure. Another guess would be somewhere in the Free State....the pic looks really old. Was it from one of the first caches you found in 2002 or something? :)

    Limpopo? No. Nor Free State.

Not 2002, but something, yes. Archived only last year - owner emigrated. (not CF) :)

Looks like a snake/dinosaur/dragon trying to squeeze down a chimney to me.

Donno what it is, but looked like a radio mast of sorts. Also saw the dinosaur. :D

  2. Oh gata-patat!

Daar is 'n konkel in die kabel.

It seems if you create a PQ larger than 500 caches, the PQ must be downloaded from the GC web site.

Hope to see a grease-monkey script soon to download it automatically, once a week.

    Anton,

Don't know if it would be of any help, but I came accross this post in the Gsak forum.

  3. I noticed a very welcome change this morning - the maximum size of a PQ has been increased to 1000 caches.

    Great news!

These dates will cover the whole of S.A. in five PQ's:

    Placed by date PQ Generation

    01 2001/01/18 2007/02/02 994

    02 2007/02/03 2008/04/26 995

    03 2008/04/27 2009/06/01 994

    04 2009/06/02 2010/03/26 995

    05 2010/03/27 Maximum date 224

    I used the macro: PlacedPQ.gsk

  4. ...and unloocked the maps but for the life of me cant get the mapsource find my device!!!

From your post title and contents, I gather that it is not a licence/unlock problem - but could be.

Mapsource doesn't like parallel installations, much like a wife or girlfrênd.

I suggest you search your PC for the "mapsource.exe" file(s) and delete it. (Or rename)

Then reinstall mapsource. Only mapsource. Browse the CD for the installation file and run it. Your Mapsource installation should then be repaired.

Also find the latest usb drivers ind install that too (Only if you're not using Win7 or Vista)

I suggest you use Mapsource version 6.13.7 if on XP, on Vista / 7, use 6.13.6. That was the last stable version. (Get it here: http://www.gawisp.com/perry/mapsource/ )

Even if the maps are not unlocked to your GPSr, Mapsource should still see it and at least be able to transfer waypoints, routes and tracks.

Let me know if something worked/not.

  5. Would you rather have the opportunity to find new caches even if not spectacular or would you rather do the odd great cache.

What is the general feeling out there?

    TCNZ's

Without any doubt, the decent cache is definately preferred to the ten or twenty lame micros. It doesn't have to be great, but lame is.. well... lame. A numbers game it may be, but to me quality has always been better than quantity. I hate asking myself "Why?" after I've found a cache.

I may not be the average cacher, and this may not be the general feeling, it's only my 2½ cents worth, which may well have been quite different if I didn't have 500 available caches within 80km from home...

  6. Now my reply is as confusing as Garmaps system so you might have to wait for Jors to set the matter straight.Trev

    Trev,

Nothing to set straight here. :D

Personally I've been using Mapsource since 2001 and Garmap from 2002, and got used to their ways, but as you say, there is nothing better than GSAK for managing cache co-ordinates.

Also, Garmap has much more info in certain categories compared to Google Earth, I'm not giving up the use of either.

If you think about it, Garmap is not that complicated:

    1.Want update? Buy DVD for R10, OR legally borrow or copy from a friend;

    2. Pop DVD in PC and follow the prompts;

    3. Fork out some cash;

    4. Result is updated maps on PC and GPSr.

    Eezy Peezy... :D

  7. Occam's Razor might apply here - never mistake stupidity for dishonesty!

Sure Trev, a valid point. If doubt exists, the stupid (or uninformed) should get the benefit.

I'd rather be labelled 'stupid' than 'dishonest' :o

OK so, I can have map source on various PC's, but if I want to update software, I can only use one pc?

No, you can use any one of the pc's or laptops mapsource is installed on to load maps to your GPSr, provided you unlocked mapsource to that specific GPSr.

  8. Went to Cape Union M and they say all the new version data disk were recalled, but not the ones with coupons??

Sure sounds like they were taking a chance, trying to sell you the coupon one. Or, they were referring to the version before the UPDATE, or they could be out of stock.

Some salespeople have this habit of not always being honest

Havent seen anything resembling a recall on the Garmap forums though.

Phone around in your area, you might find some copies.

  9. My question is this; I've looked at the map. There are literally HUNDREDS of caches. If you only had one morning in PTA (still waiting for an exact area) and the Northgate/Fourways area in Jhb. Which cache would you do?

There are very few lame caches in Pretoria, you might just about pick any Pretoria cache, and not be dissapointed.

If you have a better indication of the area you'll be visiting, as well as some personal preferences, I'm sure recommendations will be plenty.

You also can't go wrong on DakarDrix's recommendations, but please don't be put off by the Sunday note on Cornwall Hill. It seems to be old rules, and not enforced any more.

Adding to DakarDrix's options, I always enjoy driving through the Rietvlei Nature Reserve too (tarred roads):

    Picnic with Hippo's (GCPNN6) by Bjbez (1/2)

    Fern Fountain - The Sequel (GC1RPNQ) by Cache-Fan (1.5/1.5)

Rietvlei Natural Springs (GC1W1HT) by RedGlobe (2/1.5)

Rietvlei Wetlands (GC1VCFJ) by RedGlobe (2/1)

  10.

BTW, has the argument on WAAS in SA been settled? On the Garmin site it simply says WAAS is only in North America. Then I have heard that if you turn it on in SA (assuming there is no WAAS) it actually worsens your result. AND then I heard that WAAS is being tested in SA, so you might get some WAAS assistance on your device, but I don't think there is an indicator to show it (on my Oregon anyway, not sure)?

The last time when I spoke to the man in charge of the GPS reference beacons in South Africa, I was told that there are NO plans to implement a Satelite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) in South Africa.

North America has SBAS and is called Wide Area Aumentation System (WAAS), Europe's is called European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS).

South Africa does have a system which is called TRIGNET, and way better in accuracy compared to WAAS, but is not Satelite based, and thus not WAAS compatible. Free corrections for registered users are received via the internet. (NTRIP)

Prof Charles Merry, the owner of S.A.'s oldest surviving cache, Sentinel View wrote this article in 2007.

I got it working on my GPS III+ and my pc, but wasn't too practical at the time. It will also work on all Garmins which are DGPS capable but probably excludes the WAAS capable units. To see if your Garmin is capable, look on the Interface Page in the menu for RTCM IN under input/output formats.

For what it's worth, I leave WAAS disabled on my GPSr.

Sorry... I got carried away so bietjie....

  11. :D For some puzzles, the owner could just as well have given no clues at all, and it will make no difference in my ability to solve it.. :)

Some are just impossible (without getting help, of course  )

    ...not mine, I hope!? :D

    Let's make a deal...

Please leave me a hint inside Astrofix ?
