  1. Yup. Add the following: Hardhat Clipboard ID card around neck And you can walk damm near anywhere and nobody pays any attention. I have a friend who is a detecive and he uses it regularly, if anyone asks he "works for the county doing land use planning and soil conservation". I swear, with a hardhat, clipboard, ID card and even better a GPSr that looks like a measuring device you could probably walk right into anywhere as long as you acted like you had real business there. Since I am a ham rdaio operater, the couple extra antennas on my vehicle just add to the illusion. It comes in really ahndy for me since I prefer to hunt benchmarks most of teh time, and they are not in as friendly places as caches are.
  2. Yup, Haywood county not far from Max Patch, not many in that end of the county compared to the southern end, there are a whole lot of old one in the Shining Rock and Middle Prong areas. I'll be down at Bragg for a few weeks in June, any ones on post you know of I can grab?
  3. a/r/sf/ret, Alot depends on what part of NC you are in. It seems like here in the mountains they try to prserve them, but at the same time the DOT is putting new ones down like crazy, and I guess if you destroy the old ones you can employ folks putting down new ones. Some roads through here have witness posts for transverse stations every 1/3-1/2 mile, all fairly new, none in the database here. I see you like to hunt BM's here in the hills, I have alot of old 1930's marks, many chiseled squares and crosses, that haven't been recovered since I plan to hunt down this summer. Where have you been hunting?
  4. Not likely to happen. For one, it would mean a huge reconfiguration of all the GPSr's out there to ones that would "decode" the new signals. The public outcry when everyones GPSr, Onstar etc quit working would be huge, and we wont even get started on the impact on the aviation users, or the fact that the military uses hundreds of thousands of civilian GPSr's.
  5. Well, I lost my 315, so I bought a sporttrack map and now I have found my 315. it is in good shape but for a few scratches, works 100%. I have velcro on the back for attaching to my car(s) and boat dash, and will include some adhesive velcro so you can do the same. Had I never misplaced it I would be using it to this day, but I don't need two! Includes GPS, printout of manual (latest version), aftermarket carry case, some adhesive velcro, and free UPS 2nd day shipping in the lower 48! $75 or trade for mapsend topo.
  6. If its not listed you are pretty much out of luck. There are hundreds of NC DOT placed marks around here I could log but they are not in the database either, and they continue placing those!
  7. I understand what you are saying and for marks set in the ground I completely agree (although even then I have a few reservations - but let's get through this issue first.) If a disk is set in a structure (in this case the wall of a building) and then entire structure is gone, wouldn't it be resonable to declare the station/mark is destroyed? We do have the issue of making sure the person is looking in the right place, but if it can be shown that the building has been raized that the mark is destroyed? That more in line with my thinking on the issue as well. In this case the building was posiitivley identifed in the description as the police station, and positivley verified as having been destroyed by the town that owned it. I even spoke to a few people who remembered seeing the disk and what wall it was in. I have absolutley no doubt its gone, and the disk, if it still exists, either resides in the dump with the rest of the residue or as a souveneir at someones house, but is definitly no where it is supposed to be. Well, there are some tiny parts of the wall embedded into the back retaining wall that holds the hill above the parking lot that now resides at that location, so I guess in that way I have found the remains of the foundation that supported the structure the disk was mounted in, not unlike finding the concrete pads that a water tower once rested on.........
  8. What abut this case: Benchmark is in the wall, six feet up, of a building. Building was destroyed many, many years ago, confirmed by twn officials and local residents. In this case, it was clearly destroyed even though you cannot find the actual disk. Should it be logged as such?
  9. Get a military dog tag printed up with your data. Then find an unusual rock taht will kinda stand out or that you can make a hint about the shape or color of. Epoxy the dog tag to the bottom.
  10. Come on down to western NC, lots of em here reported not found by state and fed agencies! FB1125 FB0848 FB1124 The reason i asked wa sthat if you look at all the NCGS 1967 ones listed as not found on that page, its like the USPS guy didn't even try, I have seriuos doubts that that many fairly new monuments are difficult to find!
  11. And lastly, how accurate and detailed a search do they do? I see many around here listed with a skull because they could not locate.
  12. Well, I found a benchmark that had not been recoverd by the NGS since 1936 (it took some digging and clearing, and my cache was found at 0800 this morning!
  13. Around here the earliest ones (1930's) were all number letter combos, for example the -38 series all goes along a railroad, such as N-38, Q-38 (just logged it today first since 1936), and such. Later ones used names that sometimes were for a nearby terrain feature or property owners. And some are just funny. For example the station "Weight Watchers" is at a weigh station on I-40!
  14. Mangroves over water like in a swamp? Ammo boxes float, and can be tethered to the tree with some nylon cord. Make sure your seal is good and let it float underthe tree.
  15. I guess I am lucky, out of the closest 700 benchmarks maybe 5 are visible structures, seems that just doesn't work well in the mountains unless you are on the montaintop, and very few things up there but fire towers! That said, it is also harder to log more when all you are looking for is metal disks, rivits, rods, and chisel marks on rocks!
  16. I am interested in getting themapsend topo software, but how much can I expect to be able to download with a 6mb memory? Enough to make it worthwhile? Could I get the equivelant of one USGS 7.5 map sheet, for example, or more?
  17. I had the great satisfaction of watching the last person to try this on my led away in cuffs, and get a hefty fine plus 200 hours community service in court. Several years ago I had some petaheads tossing rocks into the creek I was trout fishing in, and got the same with them. The judge reallly, really laid it to them, being an avid fly fisherman himself.
  18. You can view your actual coordinates. I don't remember where that feature is, but I know you can. That's how I followed my property lines...just walked along and stayed at the same Lat or Long, depending on my direction at the time. Well color me stupid, I missed that whole feature! Thanks!!!!!!
  19. I have one, and love it for the small size. I have a Magellen 315 also, but the 101 fits in my jacket pocket so it goes everywhere I do. The plus sides are fairly accurate, easy to use, small size, and discreet if your in a crowded area. The downsides are it eats the AAA's (NIMH rechargables and a charger from radio shack are a definate must have!) and you cant view your actual coordinates without marking a waypoint, I really like having a real time display of the location.
  20. The map is part of the fun for me, before I ever leave, I plot the location on my map, then that tells me where the best parking and approaches should be.
  21. I love UTM, and hate LAT/LONG for any type of use. I guess it is just my years of using MGRS, but I love MGRS and UTM because you can look at the coordinates and get an idea of the real distance between them, since every digit means so many meters. Am I the only one who finds UTM much, much easier to use?
  22. "Small Town-Down Town" was placed on hold by your approver Honeychili. Make sure that you have a valid email address on your account and check your email for a message. I can almost guarantee you that one has been sent to you by now. If you don't see an email then send a note to the address above referencing the GC# and someone will get back with you. Rusty... Nope, no email has been recieved. I'll send one out.
  23. And you carry these because .... you are caching in Baghdad? Proof, there is a God. Edit: Clarity, also. If you are in an area where marijuana is often grown, being armed when tromping through the woods is not a bad thing. Its not unheard of for hikers to be attacked when they stumbled too close to someones cash crop. Plus they can take care of a rattlesnake quite well. As for the Back Talons, you can'y buy em now and that seems to keep those who fear guns and base opinis on emotion thinking that somethings been done, in reality they just changed the name and the same product still gets sold today if you know where to look. Of course, the Black Talon was always somewhat overrated, there are much more effective rounds out there, but they didn't have the evil sounding name, so nobody cares about them. After all, its not what it does, but how evil it sounds or looks that scares those who are ignorant on the topic. But around here, having a .22 on your hip (all that is allowed on game lands in NC when not hunting) is a fairly prudent idea.
  24. I am in NC, I'll send it to them tonight if nothing happens today, it is GCHC01.
