  1. Let me get this right. A cacher may not have an event on a National Holiday like Veterans Day and entitle it "Thank A Veteran" because it is political in nature and someone may be offended by that? You don't see those offended trying to get the "day off" abolished. I'm told that Groundspeak can sell Veterans Geocoins for profit OR charge cachers a fee for using their logo on their Veterans Geocoin? It upsets me that it's okay to make money off of the subject but we can't honor those that are the subject. Just sayin and sayin no more!

  2. For those of you are still unclear of the intent of this thread

or have been lost by the numerous diatribes in response to

my post, let me be clear!

I was DEAD SERIOUS in thinking I would get clarification of

    my questions:

1.) What are the guidelines and procedures for log deletions by reviewers.

2.) must they give a REASON

3.) Are they to give the logger the opportunity to change their log

before being deleted and just notified that the deletion took place.

I used the experience of a fellow cacher (unnamed by me) as an

example of my questions. I NEVER intended for the reviewer to be known (I never

named him/her). I asked this because I am a premium member and could

not find an answer posted in the guidelines.

The intent of this thread was an honorable one and simply a question

of guidelines and procedures. It is apparent NOW that my questions would not

have been taken serious but seen as a to "chit stir". IT WAS NOT!

I appreciate those of you who have tried to be helpful by PRIVATELY emailing me

with help rather than posting here for fear of retribution.

BE DONE WITH THIS THREAD, it has run it's ugly course.

For those of you who honesty wanted to know what this thread was about, I hope

I answered it for you. I have received my answer and unfriendly as it was (especially

the unkind remarks from a reviewer in his/her street ID). *shakes head*

Good day and happy caching all!

  3. Several caching friends and I bought T-shirts from Walmart that

say "It's All Fun and Games until the Cops Show Up". We have

been questioned as to what we are doing from time to time and

the police officers get a great chuckle out of them. In fact, the

last time the police officer mentioned he'd love to have a picture

with that t-shirt! We informed him we had a camera and 7 of us

had our picture standing with him as traffic rushed by.

The shirts seem to make for great conversation on what could

initially be a tense moment but they've all worked out well!

  5. Well then surely if the log was offensive enough to be deleted then your forum post repeating it would be deleted (or censored) too

unless theres more to the story....?

Please tell me if you see something offensive enough that the post should be deleted? If there is, why

aren't cachers allowed the courtesy of altering the post?

    Actually he can.

Thank you Brian, I'm sure he can however the road goes both ways. I believe we as members

deserve an explanation as to why a log is pulled. I'm going to take earlier advice and pose my question

to Groundspeak. Thanks for your time and help.

  6. Meh. Just tell your friend to re-log without all the diatribe and get on with your his life.

Excuse you me? life will go on, indeed, but I do support this site financially and would hope that

I could get an answer to my question from someone with the authority to do so. It may not

be my log, but I read it before it was deleted and am shocked as to why

If you want to get an answer from "someone with the authority to do so" you came to the wrong place to do it. I would suggest an email to Groundspeak themselves, instead of asking opinion here.

I really haven't spent alot of time over the last 7 years in the forum, I thought maybe the moderators had the capability of directing questions such as these to the head office. I thank you for your advise, I'll take it. Happy Caching All!

  9. As the deleted log isn't yours, I'm not certain how you know that no explanation was given.

That Nomex posted a reviewer note to the cache page, since deleted, which says in part, "Just confirming Deletion of users' Log Entry of February 6th per Groundspeak instructions..." suggests that there was communication in a number of directions.

I know because I know the cacher AND read the post after his day of caching. I was later told it had been deleted without explanation other than to be notified it was deleted. I honestly didn't see anything

wrong with it and am here not to stir but to become better aware of any changes that may have been made.

I have been a member here since 2003 and have not witnessed such a thing. Can logs be deleted

by reviewers without reason? Without being given a chance to alter the log? The cache owner had no communication with this cacher regarding his log.

  10. Can someone from "on high" please explain the guidelines and

procedures for the deletion of logs by reviewers? Are reviewers required to give a

reason for the deletion when they notify you that the log is being

deleted? Are premium or non-paying members allowed to first have

the opportunity to change the log before deletion (which I would

think would require a reason given for the deletion?). Can a log

be removed by a reviewer without the cacher being contacted by

the cache owner first and given an opportunity to make adjustments?

Remember....when a log is deleted so is the FIND.

I know as a HAPPY paying premium member I certainly would like to

think that I would be treated with enough respect to be communicated

with by Groundspeak before my find is taken from me.

This was the log that was posted, the names have been deleted to protect

the cachers involved and so not to stir a huge mess here....all I am asking

is the guidelines and procedures for log deletion by reviewers. My feeling is

if anything in this log was offensive or out of line....why isn't this cacher

(it's NOT me) being told exactly what was the issue and allowed to

make changes (and I'm absolutely sure he would have) instead of just being notified

that it was being deleted? Sure, he could just relog

without a word but as some of us do we share our experiences in order to give those

that follow a heads-up to protect the cache.

"Out rain caching with (cacher #2) today, and felt compelled to stop at this one. I guess all military barracks are the same. I spent my fair share of time in facilities such as these, when I wasn't assigned shipboard.

While heading to this hide, (cacher #2) and I noticed that we were being followed quite closely and when we neared the site, I parked and waited for the driver (who stopped off to the right rear of the cachemobile). We were not to surpised to see a security guard, who asked us what we were doing, he related to us that the area was secured after sunset, when I asked why there was no signage stating this fact at the entrance so the general public would not be violating any ordnances, his response was that the county did not have the funds. We explained we were geocaching and he informed us he knew about the sport, and asked for information that would allow the county to contact the responsible parties to have the caches removed from the area, as the county had been wanting to do this for some time but did not know who to contact.

(cacher #2) gave this gentleman the website address, and he informed us that he would include it in his report. I asked him why nobody had tried a google search for Geocaching, and his response was that "County workers are to stupid to think of that".

Now i'll be the first to admit that one of my charater flaws is a very low tolerance for Bovine Excrement, and really don't respect the speaders of the same (except for farmers). I am thankful that (cacher #2) was with me or who knows what I might have said to this person, as several of the statements this person made had me thinking WT..., does he really feel we are that gullible?

To his credit, he allowed us to look for and find this nice hide (Which I am afraid he and another security guard who showed up shortly after we made the find, probably removed from it's location), but asked us to be quick so he would not get in trouble with his supervisor.

After signing the log, we promptly left the area and got off the facility.

We were unaware that this area is unavalable at night, and it is possible that this ignorance was due to our oversight, but more than likely a result of the reliance on technology and not checking previous logs or cache descriptions and following a PQ, and checking descriptions, hints and previous logs only after starting the search on site.

I have now read the forum posts regarding this area and am hopeful that there is a happy medium found.

    Thanks for the adventure!!!)

I'm sad to say that the cacher that this happened to is now looking for guardians for his caches in order

to close his premium account. He's a plus to this sport and it saddens me that he was not given an

    explanation.

  15. I am really hoping to get out and do some caching this weekend. Pretty sad my numbers so far this year. I think Team Tek has be beat in numbers if you just take his FTF for the year over my total since January 1. So Happy Caching everyone.

Ummmmm I invited you to go out caching this weekend but received no call from you *hmmpfff*

Hit Modesto with Team Tek and ran into Plantdude who helped us to avoid a couple DNF's!

It's much more fun caching in a group.....several minds are better than one in coming up with

    excuses about what we're doing!

  16. Has any one ever found one of these? looks lke there pretty cool...not sure if I would drop 5.49 on each one?

    http://www.geogems.us/

They are pretty cool. However, with regular travel bugs and geo-coins being stolen on a frequent basis, want to bet on how long these would stay in circulation?

I have seen them online and would love to own an emerald one (birthstone). Not sure I could

release it though Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

  17. Camel680 and I dusted off our GPS's for a few hours of caching today...BOY were we rusty! We may have to dust them off a bit more often to keep our geo-senses in tune.

    Hope everyone is doing well!

Hi you two! I beat you to the "dust off" and thats about all I can beat you too!

Hope to see you out in the field!

    Janet a.k.a. StashSeeker

  18. I'm not sure anyone really follows the progress of those cachers any more but I just logged my 700th find yesterday and feel like it was well chosen... Skullduggery II is a Ron Streeter cache. He is one of the CVC founders and a wonderful mentor to the sport of Geocaching.

Thanks to Ron (where ever you are)! :o

That's great Bill, and congratulations, but why didn't you get Spider Legs at the same time?

Spider Legs?? Yunno I never thought to check out Bill's legs..hmmm...CONGRATS ON #700 BILL!!

  19. I finally was able to upload waypoints to my MAGELLAN EXPLORIST 500 but was disappointed to find that sitting next to my MAGELLAN GOLD my distances were off by 2 miles....not sure if I set up the Explorist with the correct distance default (kilometers instead of miles).

My question NOW is: With my MAGELLAN GOLD I am able to go to the SETUP MENU/NAV SCREENS and I can turn on or off SAT STATUS/COMPAS/LARGE DATA/POSTITION/ROAD/DATA/SPEED. I'm not able to find where I can do that with the EXPLORIST and I miss the ROAD screen!!!! Can anyone tell me what I may be doing wrong? Gawd don't tell me that option isn't available because for the life of me you can't find a cache without it as far as I'm concerned!

Thanks for your time! And yes, I've looked and looked for online data help.

  20. I always carry a camera with me and when asked I say I'm taking pictures....for some reason....no one ever asks me of what lol.

When i saw this thread i had to share this story with you.

Yesterday afternoon I decided to go out for 2 more local caches. My co-ordinates brought me to a baseball diamond/park luckily it was early morning and not much action. As I followed my directions I saw a rather attractive gentleman on his bicycle waiting outside a public bathroom waiting for his kids. He watched carefully as I began taking photo's (always carry a camera to divert attention from my real goal). It was clear that he and his children were going to out wait me as they rested so I decided to move to my next cache across town.

The next cache brought me to a bike path that ran through town. I got right to work...this was a difficult cache...it was discuised to look like something other than a container. I read and re-read clues and previous posts..searched and thought...watched and examined then suddenly I hear "HEY!! Didn't I just see you at the park over there?!" OMG it was that guy and his kids!! Yeeeeesh! As he's riding towards me he says..."Do you work for the newspaper?" (as he glances at my camera) I said, "No I don't". He said, "Do you work for the city?" I said nope (by now he's riding past me and still trying to guess what I am doing. "Do you work for the county?" I said, "nope". He stopped abruptly and put his foot down, he turned to me and said....."Is my wife paying you to watch me?!" The two of us both laughed and he continued riding on.

  21. I did as you instructed and still not able to view. I know it's me and not the software or the GPS just need the lightbulb to go off!

When you are exporting in GSAK, choose the explorist geocache format and name the file with a .gs extension, and put it into a Geocache folder. For other waypoints/POIs, choose the explorist POI format, name it with a .upt extension and save it into a POI folder. They will not be recognized in the unit without these extensions.

You may want to create these on your hard drive first, and check them out. They are text files, so you can open them with anything. Then drag them over to your explorist after USB connected.
