  1. One other thing in addition to the posted definitions... NANO often equals TROUBLE... The things are often a pain to find! On the other hand that IS what we do... find the difficult, or easy. Have fun... try to find some bigger ones and work down. Doug
  2. Welcome aboard. Congratulations... this may be a first ( unlikely though). You have logged the TB correctly, and gave the method / situation. [edit] I re read your note... I'll state the obvious... TB's and Geocoins belong IN caches, not sitting in the woods... You should find a cache and place it there. [end edit] When you wish to drop it somewhere just find and log the new cache. My first suggestion would be to try to find the CACHE it was supposed to be in... Then you would be a true cacher newbie. The cache you retrieved it from would be the one. See how close the 'find' was to that cache. You could log the cache using a NOTE, without finding it, but what fun would that be. Of course I'm assuming the whole thing wasn't where the TB was found. You could check that out as well... You can drop it after logging the find (no coordinates needed for that, just find, log and drop from the options when you log. IF you do the cache it was in, you can retreive it again and go for a different cache. That is called dipping, in then out, just for a visit or to correct something. There are several pages of FAQ's on Finding Caches and TB's / Geocoins. I'm assuming that you have seen some of them since you got this far. There are many here to guide you on your journey, hope you and your family enjoy this pastime. It looks like you have good instincts to start. Doug
  3. Actually, I think that it might be desirable to mention on the TB page (a NOTE) that it isn't there... I don't think that it is required to have the TN to log a note, almost positive... Look for the NOTE option where the log the TB stuff is. That said, It might be prudent to give some time in case it was picked up by someone who hasn't logged it yet... but no harm in saying that you didn't find it in the cache... it's only a note. Those UNITE bugs belong to you know who! And the diabetes people. Doug
  4. Even funnier... I like yours... BTW did you catch the request for the larger version of yours by Wa3... I haven't found the shadowy stuff on this software yet... but I know how to get it done. I'm just a bit occupied. Working on a similar concept for something else, but I suspect the easy way is to go back to my animation software and shoot pics. I did that for ertyu 's e. He never did use the better ones hmm. Like the fire truck. I started to research that, but have got bottlenecked. Maybe this weekend, just for fun. but I did find some interesting pics in Nebraska that might have some use... at least for fun. I have to find time for my hawaiian smurf... aka menehune in blue. Doug
  5. Never offended, it was good working on the project with your imaging... of course you could use one as avatar and the other on your page.... that is what the two sizes are for. But that's up to you, I think you can also get the larger one from Roz since that is usually the source for the smaller ones... Have fun! BTW, I used yours to correct a few problems with colouring and file storage.. and learned a lot about this new software (to me) and I'm tickled we all win out. Well almost, it just started SNOWING again... drat. Doug
  6. I'm going to make 60 by this time next month... Starting to think Hams live longer despite the radio waves... Doug VE7RXC edited: my thinG once I had time to thinK about it...
  7. I will start by saying, I'm sorry you have had some rejection... Part of the problem was simply communication delay and some unclarity. For the record, I asked for your ideas, and you sent them promptly to me directly. That was good. Unfortunately, I started some research on your area and came across the website and noticed it was a contest... BEFORE getting your note. To be clear, you DID mention that it was contest material in that note, but after I noted the fact for the other artists. I was correct in my assumption that it would make a small difference to some. WE don't wish to create ideas/ art for people to enter contests. However, I thought that my 2 rules were apt. I work with YOUR ideas only in order to get it into computerized format ( probably to a good sketch level), and you would tell the others that they could seek help from at least me in order to level the field for everyone. I still don't have a problem with that, and as you said, your organization was actually encouraging idea man / technogeek teaming. In that light I am no different than your locals [ I was kidding about entering by the way, my way of saying that if my ideas went into your project or someone elses, that I might as well enter]. I like to get good ideas from people who are not as artsy as some, and most here would agree that I am NOT a daVinci... Anyway, I am looking at your project and will keep that at arms length from this forum. I don't think that you have all of our communications to judge by, and people do have other opinions, as well as fatigue, illness etc to deal with. I still say the biggest problem is the lack of TIME to get things done... Read back and you will see that I am trying to back off from this for a bit, yet here I am trying to stay lightly engaged in the fray... Got to run again, but don't take things too hard, I understand dissappointment and reaction to something that seems harsh, but that might have been avoided by a little different wording at the getgo... but that was not all that serious. Doug
  8. Hi there... like I say to most people here welcome... and Did you have anything specific in mind? My first data query would be What KIND of rookie crew? How many? Doing what? With what? My first flash of inspiration went back to my first time on a brigantine... yep a storm blow... and then the management found out they had the date wrong and we were NOT the experienced sailors... anyway the rail was quite busy, like the rest of us... learned a lot FAST that night! Somehow I don't think that image is what you had in your mind. Doug
  9. Just generally speaking, I can think on it... right now I'm hustling... DO you happen to have that image in a larger size...? or know where to find it. Whoever does this will likely want it or something similar... although it is not impossible to work with 75x75 to start. Other than GPSr and other georegalia... did you have anything specific in mind? Doug [edit note: I did capture your current avatar for reference... I guess that you aren't interested in the one where I couldn't resist converting it to a Hawaiian SMURF. Just couldn't help myself... I've been tired lately and stressed etc. I get these strange urges... Almost as if a giant occult hand... Dang I've been reading to much of Vinny... again. [end note]
  10. edit note:] Rules: This contest is open to all members of the River Valley Geocachers. You have until April 30th to create and submit your image (multiple submissions are allowed) by emailing it to... Since this is for a club contest... I'm still willing and assume the same for the others... IF we are working on YOUR ideas and not mine or someone elses, and IF you tell the others who are graphically / digitally challenged in RVG that they can do the same here. That said, you have left things quite late given how occupied we are... plus you lose time to most of us... I'm MDT, and the others vary from EDT to PDT. How much to join RVG??? hmmm... Doug
  11. Hi. I'd like to suggest that you may like to start with creating a list of items that you wish to retain. Follow that with clear but simple description of things you would like to add / modify, including such things as bigger, smaller, colour shifts etc. That gives us something to work with. I see that you had no problem sending along the original graphic. Most computers come with MS paint or something similar. You could do some simple sketches and post them as well, if you have access to image storage. If not, one / all of us could receive them by email. Some people are much better at this than they give themselves credit for. I like to use the ideas created by the 'client' regardless of how they are presented. So don't be shy... I'm in the process of learning new software, and like the tasks for practice. I'm also a bit busy, but fire away if you are not in a hurry. The others also like to do this as long as life gets dealt with too. Doug
  12. Wildlife seen while caching??? Heck, out here you can't even get to your car without seeing Wildlife! More deer for now, but soon bears will be almost as common. Doug
  13. I have an even older 45xl... I have yet to do it, but I suspect that you also have to do some editing. The new protocols have far more data than the older machines can digest. Try the technology forum, they had answers there before, but you might have to dig a bit... search on 12xl in the search box. I think the .LOC files are closer to start with... but like I said have to be trimmed. You might have to use one of the management softwares similar to GSAK (which might work as well). Doug
  14. Only the first 6 characters are what you need. xxxxxx not the -xxxx part. I got in with that. Which brings up the part about PLEASE don't post the Tracking Number Online ANYWHERE... If you can edit this out please do so, IF not it will be anyway by a moderator. IF you publish it like this it can be used improperly to mess up the logging system. USE the Reference Number TBPFKA for sure, that is what it is for, and IF you have to ID the number to someone, we can PM or email via our profiles. THANKS. As for what to do, try what I did, and edit the note to a find, delete the note if you have to. Doug Good hunting.
  15. I'm better rested and calmer now... I realize they are in the center... not halfway from the ends... Just had to say that at the time. It wasn't an entry. As for adamsloco... that bit about round and round in the dark is likely what inspired ' the Member from Kicking Horse Pass' character (Ron Broadfoot, I think). Doug
  16. I heartily agree. The problem is also a bit larger than you state... It is not just on GC.com. I find pictures of TB and Geocoins all over the web. Usually personal web sites, blogs etc. Pictures showing the Tracking Numbers clearly. Occasionally the same photos that were blanked out over here. I found one the other day that was a news article about Travel Bugs... yep photo and text with the number and the place to track them for NON cachers to use. As for here... try the bug gallery. I did six pages of TBs the other day and got 20 or so that required no effort other than looking. Many more could be ID'd with a little image manipulation. One one web site / blog, I found numbers, cache id's, pictures of the hide and hints about how to find the cache once on the scene... Nice ladies by the look of it, they exchange the information with family and friends. Face it the problem is here. What can you do? There was a thread about TB's vanishing at events. One thing that came up was that there needs to be some PR done to ensure that people understand the 'guidelines' for TB's, and logging requirements. People come there and expect to learn, so why not make sure they get taught correctly. Could be a simple poster with pics and the instructions. It would not be tough to add the line about NOT posting the TN, but to use the RN instead. I'd also like to say that finding some of the lost ones would be much facilitated if people would use the Took, Left notes seriously. In the case of bugs, I suggest that simply using the bug name initials and T or L would suffice. Makes tracing a lot easier. And this should be done retrieving and dropping, even discovering. Of course that is the cache log, but even in the TB/GC logs it doesn't hurt. I like to try and get people to make sure that if the TB page doesn't have a pic of the TB, then please add one in the gallery. Some people don't have cameras or forget. Nice to know what the thing looks like. Anyway... notes and notifications of exposed 'secrets' are about the only other tools we have, done nicely of course. I intend to keep my eyes open for imprisoned Trackables in collections at events too. But I don't get to many. Doug
  17. Ontario! .. ? Let's get a tad more accurate than that.. I'll go for the nearest city if not the "place". I'm a bit tired and frazzled and can't help myself... really... THE YELLOW LINE??? Going and hiding away in shame. Doug...
  18. Sadly, no longer able to be PIC... my eyes are too bad for the last many years... I had private glider, power for single, VFR, as well as Parachuting C licence, including Instructor and Rigger. Still try to get air time when possible as 'skilled' passenger. Reality is that I never did get that many hours 'driving'. But I did get a bunch... also spent time helping teach groundschool for RCAirCadets as well as other subjects. Good idea for a thread. I wonder if there are any aviation related caches... not just crash sites and airport TB hotels... fine for those of course, but ones you actually have no choice but to fly in and hopefully out of. We have one near here, where the preferred access is by helicopter, but you can hike and drive from the other side of the mountain range... I haven't got that one yet... if ever. But you don't have to 'aviate' to do it. Something of a navigation exercise problem and or multi type would be in order... but not to much work or time commitment, or most would not be able to do it... eg rental pilots. Doug
  19. I just put up my work on Wa3 which was mostly working their idea for them, and trying out some of BC's suggestions for improving things... which mostly worked... still need to polish that, and fine tune my storage system there... I'll hit you for ideas too eventually, yours seem nice and crisp, I'm going to go back and tough up a few I've done with the new info and let the owners decide whether to upgrade or not. It's already quite a bit more predictable. .GIF's were seldom this much trouble... which dates me a bit. Good side is I'm used to creating in small images at the pixel level... used to think 640 x 480 was wastefully huge image. actually it IS... but I got good at working smaller first and then growing it up. I try to compromise here, but try to avoid really fine details. Looks like you are it for now til Friday... Good luck... keep your eyes out for mizdeeds and the others. That was nice image of .... Galen, I think... certainly not Elric... I didn't catch much of the spin off series. I really wanted to see if either of you would do the couch potato thing... I guess I'll have to do that one myself. Doug
  20. Hi there... I had enough time and patience to finish what I started... I've seen at least one or two others. Anyway, I was going to fiddle yours a little bit. And here they are hopefully... Use whoever you want, but I said I would take on YOUR effort with MY effort... no concerns re the outcome. I think that mostly clears out my current effort since Lydford Locators has got switched around. Any time I have for a few days is going over to my poster for TCSI, since we all have versions of the mag glass thing... but I have promised a better effort for the profile... and they may still want changes. You guys may have to exercise patients if BC is back on shift and I'm looking for work... but I will still be monitoring. And working on learning more about THIS art package. Lots to absorb. Anyone having problems with uploading the avatars, apparently what I've written is useful and getting more so. Just ask for a copy. or I might just post it... most is in the testing thread but back a few pages now. Doug
  21. I'm slightly redoing that one a bit... others may have other offerings.. Glad the notes helped. Let me know if they were either overkill or confusing... That squishing is normal, and why we tend to do the reducing ourselves if possible... also why text tends to dissappear or blur out. Note. I've been in touch with the Lydford Locators... They seem to have switched the avatar and profile images, and should be corrected soon. Doug
  22. I don't suppose you trade hours... sigh! I'm fried, but as for ideas, my first thought turns to a 'couch' potato getting over his fear of frying... Try that idea nymphnsatyr! BC and others... Doug
  23. Thanks for the enthusiasm... I am working with the Wa3 thing, they had their own image... I think I can do something there. I think that is what they want, so I'm just squaring it up for now and slightly modifying it to 'balance'. Good on the other things. I'm also working on the TCSI bits, but don't mind others there, but what you don't see is the email stuff... BC gave me some advice on the image output issue and that is starting to show some results... at least as far as the compression stuff. Best thing for all is to take on all the new ones like the shrink there... I'm just going to clean up loose ends for a bit. I gave BC a list of what I thought was outstanding. I've got product to Lydford, TEK, Lazy sunbathers (which I'm improving all the time). Jake got his concept and you guys took on... I think he might want a GPSr, but he will comment. Good on Wooden Cyclist and son. And you want to tackle the technomage... and psychy... After that it's open season. I got to go find some work, to replace the vanished retirement fund... doesn't everyone? I'm still going to be here.. of course... Would like to do some caching too! Once the spring snowstorm melts... again... still... etc. I HAVE to post up a few of my ideas so that all that time isn't lost. Good on the technomage one. I pulled a few webimages to play with, but it's hard, since they mostly stand around doing things 'mentally'. I'll let you have that one... and any new ones for now. Good work, I'm going to learn a lot from you too, I think. Doug
  24. Anything I can do to help... would love to help with JAKE's. Are all the details back in this thread? -Rozie Right upstairs, my post and the one before your first... thanks... HE hasn't added anything new yet. Got to run. doug
