  1. OMG!!!!! I forgot my single most important BM hunting item: Buddy. My 3 1/2 year old Wire Haired Dachsund. One of these days I will train him to sniff out brass.
  2. OK.......here is my typical BM hunting kit. Being the type that likes the long, mountain top hikes and needing to be prepared, I generally carry the following: KEY: 1) Vietnam era load bearing suspenders and web belt with butt pack, two canteens, survival knife and first aid kit. 2) Weather radio 3) Walkie-talkies 4) Military lensatic compass 5) Home made 13 inch probe 6) Mini entrenching tool 7) Magellan SportTrak Topo GPS 8) Boot knife 9) Pock-its with Super Leatherman, flashlight and scissors Not shown: Bush style vest or jacket (lots of pockets!), Hiking staff, digital camera (needed to take this pic), a CamelBac for the longer hikes, Analog range finder and binoculars. Needed: A good steel tape! Edited P.S. : The butt pack keeps my load LOW and helps to walk upright. It is usually loaded with a spare cheap compass, extra batteries, peanuts, beef jerkey, rags, rope, a spare shirt, a survival guide, a first aid guide and assorted nick-nacks that the day and hike may call for.
  3. It has now been about two weeks since evenfall was given his 'time out'. Does anyone have any updates or news on this situation?
  4. OK......I have already posted a pic with Five BM's in it. We better keep looking.
  5. saguaroastro : Speaking for myself.......If you logged DV0069 as destroyed on GC.com......well ok. But I do not think you should file it with NGS as destoyed. We non-professional surveyors do not always interpret the directions well. We can often be wrong because the directions are vague. When I find a mark that I am sure is not there, I still do not list it as destroyed.......I give the benefit of the doubt to the professionals. When I list my DNF, I will often say why I do not think it may exist, but I have found marks that others, including NGS, have listed as Destroyed. Do not be too quick to think that you or others cannot make a mistake. Spoo
  6. This is a good question. I encountered one Tri-station this past summer where developers are destroying the station and its RM's. I reported this very fact both here on GC as well as on an official report to NGS. I do not expect NGS to respond to me personally, but does someone in official standing care about this? EDIT NOTE: I am in reference to OC2712, PARSON
  7. Keystone: Time heals all wounds? OK.......I am not in a position to change your mind or allow evenfall to come to his defense on an open forum. I simply thought that things here might be more open minded.
  8. Keystone: Fair enough. I used the word 'banned' rather than 'time out'. I stand corrected. It is interesting to note that you did not address any of the issues that led to this time out, or to my thoughts on this matter. Spoo
  9. OK….let me try this out and let’s see what others might think. Max: You jumped in way too soon in trying to defray a situation that really was not there. But I suspect you were baiting evenfall and knew he would take the bait. evenfall: You took the bait. Rather than just ignoring Max or trying to say you meant no harm, you leapt into the fray and went into a tirade. In all fairness to evenfall, I do not see a personal attack against Max, as having taken place, without evenfall stating why it was “good or bad”, as quoted by Max. evenfall: You are a real stickler about the rest of us following the rules. Maybe you should follow the rules of common etiquette? Max: Although this forum is owned and operated by GC.com, isn’t it an open, public forum? I thought this forum was so we could ask questions, get answers, discuss, debate…..and yes….disagree with each other. If not true, something here is wrong. Unless a forum user is using bad language, being racist or sexist, denouncing ones lineage……etc…….is there a real problem? I have had my arguments here in this forum with evenfall………so have others. That does not mean that he is right…..or that I am right. Although I can find you to be irritating at times, evenfall, I will defend to my death, your right to your statements. That is what a FORUM is all about. People…..look up that word! Max: You may have thought you were doing right by banning evenfall. Maybe you were. That is not my call. But maybe you might reconsider? evenfall: You may have thought you were being singled out by Max. Maybe you were. But maybe you might reconsider? As in a family, a Forum does not allow you to pick and choose the people that are in it, EXCEPT that here you are free to just ignore a person. I stubbornly refuse to pick sides with either Max or evenfall but hope that they and the users here, will all continue to debate freely and without fear of retribution…… only then will this forum be of benefit.
  10. unixboy: I stand corrected.
  11. unixboy: Although your report to NGS clearly does not state 'yes or no', your report implies that you found the mark. I do not see that you declared this mark as a Not Found.
  12. Teacher: As Shirley says, we trust you. I do not have pix of all my claims. There are no prizes here......no one gets money for the most finds. We all do this for fun and sport. If you begin to log for NGS, you might want to have pix, and good notes to help substantiate your finds since you are then doing it for the Gov't and professional surveyors. Welcome aboard and HAVE FUN !
  13. $25 Yipppeeee! That will almost give me enough gas money for my next BM hunt!
  14. OK.....I stand corrected, but vindicated as well. Next time I will wear my glasses! As these photos show, the mark is stamped M 16 RESET 1988, (NOT 1939 ) which still does not coincide with any of the recorded history. But I am still sure that this mark was not placed until recently. It is kind of hard to miss the orange Witness Post and the Bedrock as seen in these views. The mark: As seen from the road. Note the pole, the Marker and the Bedrock in the background, the culvert is to the right in this shot: Finally, the mark easily seen in the Bedrock: I acknowledge my 'error' of stating that this is OC0556. As a RESET mark, this is not correct. But 1988 does not coincide with any of the described 'finds' nor does NGS seem to acknowledge this movement of the Mark. It is several obvious meters from the described location. I am still looking for any comments from NGS.
  15. seven............ There is ALWAYS the chance that I am wrong. But this boulder (probably it is more properly some bedrock) is very prominent and all the new orange ribbons and stake tell me that the reset is recent. I will swing by ASAP with my camera to document.
  16. This goes with the previously posted "Monument Dusters Nightmare". I have searched several times for OC0556, M 16, in Maine. Finally, this year, I decided to post notes on GC and NGS saying NOT FOUND. Today, while driving by, I noticed a lot of orange at this location and pulled over. Dadgum if there isn't a mark in the general area. It is stamped M 16 RESET 1939 and WAS NOT there a few months ago. There is an orange new style Marker Post and the disk is mounted prominently in the top of the only boulder here. There is no way that I missed it before. There is also no such listing for a RESET mark on NGS nor does the date 1939 correspond with the reports for M 16. It is several meters from the listed description but close enough that someone looking for M 16 will find this RESET. I have added notes to both GC and NGS at the M 16 pages and have described this new RESET anamoly. I am interested in any insight that anyone may have but am especially interested in hearing from the NGS folk here to see what they might know about this new RESET.
  17. Try this for an underside view: Underside view This is one photo from my sequence, My Very Own Monument taken last August. Unfortunately, my monument is drilled in bedrock, not cast in a concrete post.
  18. This one is an interesting example of a mark first observed in 1930, though it had been marked in 1774. I was looking for a 61=pole. The pole is long gone, so I guess I can't log that for the contest. Yeah........I can see how a pole from 1774 might be gone from this day and age !!!!! lol
  19. Colorado Papa !!!!!! Good to see you on here again. I do hope all is fine with you and yours.
  20. rescue: Try going here. Buckner has been putting this together. Indoor BM page

    Cors Mistake

I am only now starting to slowly learn about CORS stations. Researching in my area, I came across what I think is alot of people claiming a find on ORONO CORS ARP, AF9645 . It would appear to me that everyone is claiming the find but that it is a non NGS recognized Gravity Control Station. The NGS site clearly locates an antenna as the observation point. No one making the claim seems to be from these forums or has filed with the NGS site. But I do hope that anyone here that reads this will not make the same mistake. I am adding a note as such to the GC page. EDIT NOTE: Corrected Gravity Control Station as the mark being found.
  22. Craig will be in my thoughts forever more. He will not be forgotten.
  23. All right......obviously I screwed up this thread before it even got out of the hanger. I'll close it now.
  24. At the risk of bringing evenfall down on me, I hope I have asked this question correctly. A Benchmark is a Vertical only accurate mark. A Bench Mark is a Horizontal only accurate mark. Why the difference? Why can't all three axis (sp) be located? Aren't they all needed to be of any use? I mean....what good is your elevation if you do not know where your LAT-LONG is? What good is your LAT-LONG if you do not know your elevation? Is there a term to define a X,Y,Z axis location mark?
  25. I confirm Papa-Bears' above statement. My October reports are now listed on the NGS site.
