    Wow, I've not been geocaching for years other than maintaining the SDCET Top 70 TB and was checking out the forum links on that page only to see there's not much action around here any more! What happened?

     

    If anyone knows any San Diego-based geocachers that are not and should be included in the TB list, please let me know (apparently via writing note on the TB rather than here :unsure: ).

    I have a few items that may be of interest to people here:

    • I turned in our TFTC license plates to save some money so if anyone wants them, they may be available at the DMV.

     

    I've been "hardly caching" for the past few years but hope to get back into it again more sometime and see you out there!

    I can still make it on Friday. I will be coming from the Spring Valley (La Presa) area.

    I know it's not all about the numbers, but if anyone wants to see them at a glance, don't forget the SDCET Top 40 TB. If you have over 1000 finds and live in San Diego County and want to be on (or off) that list, please let me know.     Would anyone be interested in doing a group run around the San Elijo Hills (near San Marcos)? I went up there a few days ago with my son but was put off by the new-looking sign warning about recent mountain lion sightings. I thought maybe we'd feel a little safer in a group! I see a bunch of people have been running around up there finding these caches, but I'd rather not run into a mountain lion alone! :P I haven't been able to find any more detailed info on the sighting - so maybe it's just an echo of the various sightings from the past couple of years. Any info on that sighting from someone who lives nearby would be appreciated as well!

    AT&T Tilt w/ Google Maps

    Just upgraded to the AT&T Tilt with Windows Mobile 6. I don't have a clue on how to get it to work for caching. Any suggestions?
    I haven't had much luck using it for caching (since I have a Garmin 60cs which has a compass and an arrow that always points directly to the cache) but you could try cachemate ppc (smittyware.com). I use garmin mobile xt on my Tilt for auto-routing (and never use my Garmin 60cs for that anymore). Let us know if you find something that works for caching!

    Im thinking of getting the tilt phone from ATT/cingular but to use the GPS software that makes the GPS antenna work you have to pay $20 a month since it is a windows mobile phone i can put what ever i want on it and not worry about the charge according to the ATT rep so anyone have any experience or suggestions ?
    I have a Tilt. The built-in GPS works for free. If you want to use their navigation software, you probably have to pay a monthly fee and need a data plan. I bought Garmin Mobile XT on a card to use instead, since I didn't want to depend on a data connection when I get lost. :rolleyes: That said, I haven't found it particularly usable for actually finding geocaches (other than cache information, using cachemate and the gc web site) due to the static navigation problem. I'm used to caching with a Garmin 60cs which has a compass and the pointer will point in the right direction as you wander around the cache. But the Tilt with Garmin Mobile XT works better than my 60cs for auto navigation!

    I just bought and installed Cachemate on my Pantech Duo. I loaded some caches and tried to "navigate" to one of them without any GPS hooked up just to see CacheNAV. It gave me a message saying "No GPS interface plugin was selected. Do you want to use "WM5 GPS Driver"? I'm not sure what that is so I said "No."

    I use the Windows GPS Driver - it appears to allow sharing of the GPSr, since I can toggle between BeeLineGPS, CacheMate and Mobile XT without any problem. The one thing that's kept me from using BeeLineGPS seriously is I can't figure out how to bulk delete waypoints and it would take too long to delete the 900+ that are in there now. :rolleyes:

    In Mobile XT, Settings, Map, Show Position = change to "At GPS Location" instead of the default "On Roads"

     

    This *MAY* fix both the slowness issue and the off road issue. The Garmin 10x does not have a slowness issue as I use it. It updates the position every 1 second, no matter how fast I am moving.

    Thank you for directing me right to it - mine is currently set to "At GPS Location" so I guess that won't help! :rolleyes:

     

     

    Like I said earlier in this thread, Mobile XT does show the symbols on the map, just rename your GPX file to "CURRENT.GPX" and active sync it into the \Garmin\GPX folder then re-start MobileXT, it will load up to 1000 of them and show the correct symbols for the caches and the additional waypoints. I actually use GSAK to create the GPX file as I like the ability to change the names and descrition to suite my needs, but I have loaded GPX files from PQ and fromthe web page download and they have worked just fine.

    Thanks, I'll give that a try. I like how they work as proximity alarms too so maybe I can do both.

    Here is a good article that compares the SirfStarIII against the Qualcomm gpsONE which is what the Tilt uses. The SirfStarIII is still the king. The good news is it is possible to buy just the bluetooth SirfStarIII receiver if it works much better for geocaching. It's really not that expensive. However, I'm still curious to hear from someone that has used this GPS receiver for geocaching....

    That is an interesting article, but the GPSR in the Tilt is much better than that article would indicate. Sitting still, Google Maps nails my phone's position perfectly. Garmin XT routes perfectly. I think the problem with using it for Geocaching has to do with some setting related to how often it updates it's position when you are not moving above a certain speed. I think as you slow down, it updates less frequently. Just speculating, but that's what it appears. I can get the geocaches into it easily with POI Loader even as proximity alerts (as long as they are close enough to the road). But, what I want in a caching GPSr is what my 60cs does, show all the caches on the map. In my perfect world, Garmin would add a geocacihng mode to the Mobile XT software and Qualcomm would add a tool to adjust whatever setting I need to adjust to make it more sensitive at slower speeds. The one good thing is I only paid $70 for the card. The bad thing is I overwrote my maps with my topo maps from MapSource and had to buy a new card. :rolleyes: BTW, to someone else, I don't have a "lock on roads" setting.

    It comes with City Navigator maps and does not cost that much more than new maps....

My experience is it does not work well for geocaching, mainly because the arrows in the software I use (cachemate, beelinegps) do not respond quickly enough while you are approaching the cache. You could walk right by and it's still pointing in front of you. I sort of ran out of time for geocaching in general and geocaching with the Tilt particularly and haven't explored it further. That might not be the case with the external GPSr and there are tools for adjusting SIRF settigns that might help. I hope others chime in with better results. :lol:

     

    Does the Tilt come with a Sirf chip? If it doesn't, that may be part of the reason that it is slow....

    Yeah, no SIRF chip as far as I know. :D But, there is a "firmware" update out there I haven't tried yet, so maybe things will change?

    geocaching with the ATT Tilt

    When we were looking into getting started, some people here in the forums told me that they were having good luck using their ATT Tilt for Geocaching. I am hoping that person, or someone else with positive experience in such, can post with how to do that. Geo-Navigator tells me they dont support the Tilt and aren't looking to anytime soon. Is there a similar program out there somewhere that works on the Tilt? Can you download the program with a version meant for another phone and use it successfully on the Tilt?

     

    Any advice to help in this matter would be appreciated. Thanks!

    You can use Cachemate for PPC and BeeLine GPS and several others on the Tilt. That said, I haven't actually been using my Tilt for geocaching because I still have a Garmin 60cs that does it better. The few times I attempted to geocache with the Tilt, I was disappointed in the lack of response re the distance and bearing as you get close to the cache. But, it's better than no GPSr at all! FWIW, I bought Garmin Mobile XT for the Tilt and now I use the Tilt exclusively for automobile routing - it's far better at it than the 60cs (except for not showing all the caches I'm driving by :unsure: ).     That target list was put together after my post. I had seen the bookmark when it was empty.

     

    I rated his bookmark as "not useful".

     

    I don't know if my comments can be viewed by cachers other than he/she.

    This is what I put,

    Has anybody used AT&T Tilt (Kaiser) pda for Geocaching?

    I'm trying to use my Tilt for geocaching. However, Beeline GPS keeps telling me that GPS connection has failed, but it was able to autodetect the GPS. What am I doing wrong?
    I've noticed quite a few times that the QuickGPS data is erroneous and locates me far away from my actual position. Usually re-downloading the data in QuickGPS solves the problem. A couple times, when the bogus data is "out there" too long, I've actually had to go and delete it on my Tilt and let it figure out where it is on it's own. This is probably not related to your problem, but FYI. Probably can't hurt to go to QuickGPS and download the current data.
