  1. How do they figure anyone ever finds the things if they're buried? Just someone trying to meet a deadline and not thinking. . . again.
  2. Usually, nothing special, but if I think of it, I like to wear either my hunting vest if it's colder, or an orange or lime green t-shirt if it's warmer. This is so that I'm visible to others, and should the situation arise, no one can accuse me of "sneaking around" with a straight face.
  3. Yes, it's sometimes a difficult proposition. I don't do this very often, but here are two things you might try: 1) Hold the unit as far from the camera as you can reach with your arm, or find something to set it on. This is so that hopfully the GPSr and the building will be somewhat in focus. 2) Make sure the flash on the camera is turned off. This can cause a lot of unwanted reflection on the GPSr screen. It's not much, but maybe it will help.
  4. Well, yes and no. As you well know, the one with its own local forum tends to be weighted kind of east of my specific locality. Well, you should have seen it a few months ago. OK, OK! I'll go over to IGO right now and see what's happening! Hey, you changed your avatar again. Must be something in the air.
  5. Well, yes and no. As you well know, the one with its own local forum tends to be weighted kind of east of my specific locality.
  6. My local geocaching community is relatively small. Sometimes, when there's a brand new hide, and the race numbers are coming in (FTF, STF TTF, etc.), I am sorely tempted to make comments as a note on the cache page, especially if I am unable to get out there in the race. I've only done it once, and my comment was actually somewhat relevant (it was a puzzle cache). Has anyone ever done this, and what are your thoughts about how rude it may or may not be?
  7. Bummer, man. I hope you're chuckling a little bit about it by now, though. Those are the kind of stories that get told for a long time afterwards.
  8. This picture is captioned, "Uh-oh, I think I made a BIG mistake. Where's my liquid paper? WHERE'S my liquid paper?" I didn't get stuck, but I sure thought I was going to. At the top of that little driveway is a busy road. I, in my 2WD Chevy S-10 pickup, had to get a running start from where I couldn't see if anybody was coming. It took me about 20 tries before I got out of there when the road was clear to turn on to. Here is the log that goes with the picture. At least I was FTF!
  9. I very much dislike it when people do this and here's why: It gets us geocachers into trouble sooner or later, because some yahoo is going to get tired of finding the "right" way to get in and cut through somebody's yard. That's not good for any of us. People are suspicious of us as a group the way it is.
  10. Yeah, but it doesn't roll off the tongue very well. "balboaboy" Knowing me, I'd end up calling him bee-bop-baloo-bop. There are some who can't quite come to terms with my name and call me "Balboa-boy," but you're right, it just doesn't roll off the tongue. Not only that, I have absolutely nothing to do with Balboa Island, which is where the name comes from. My wife used to live there. But I don't know what I'd call myself if I were no longer Balboagirl. Maybe that's why I've never changed it. Maybe I'll get a sock-puppet and try a few different things out. Wait a minute, did I actually say that out loud?
  11. I have considered changing my name, but if I was going to do that, I should have done it a long time ago, when it became apparent that my wife was not really going to actively pursue this activity. If I change now, how will people remember me?
  12. I know a way to find all the archived caches, but it is a bit tedious: Bring up any cache page in the area you want to search. Scroll down to "Geocaching.com maps". These are the ones that show the green-box icons for regular single caches, and the yellow-box icons for multis, etc. There should be a check-box below the map for "Show archived." Check this box, and you will most likely find a lot of caches that weren't there before. Then you can "identify" these caches. They will show up on your list as the red letters with the strike-through. Hope this helps.
  13. Here's a tip. Instead of starting a topic in the forums, you could try e-mailing the cache owner (as suggested by several people above). I didn't even know these forums existed until Thot tipped me off about this thread. If you had sent me an e-mail, I would have responded relatively promptly. Hey, welcome to the forums. Or would that be fora? In any case, isn't it amazing that there are people who don't find the game/sport to be enough? We actually have to discuss it in great detail, too?
  14. Have you tried Frontline for the dog? Works very well. The ticks bite, and then they DIE! Ha, ha ha! I wish there was Frontline for people.
  15. I have camo'd all my ammo cans, and some of my small caches, but it's not necessarily so that cachers have more difficulty finding them. The small caches are camo'd to make them more muggle resistant. I camo the ammo cans so that they don't look so much like ammo cans to some muggle who might find them accidentally. I wouldn't want them to panic and call the bomb squad. It happened once around here. Other than that, I want people to be able to find the things without too much trouble. Maybe just a little trouble.
  16. Our local caching website/forum, Iowa Geocachers Organization (IGO). Slogan: IGO. Do you?
  17. Gee, now that I see Dr. Utonium (or whatever his name is) against a white background, I realize that is a pipe he is holding. Funny, up to now, I'd always thought it was a martini.
  18. Uh-huh. I just heard back from Garmin. It evidently has to go in. Oh well. At least it's under warranty.
  19. Yes, you absolutely can edit your post from "note" to "found it." Just go to the cache page itself, and find your entry. There should be a button toward the right that says "Edit/Visit log." This will give you your log by itself. Then click the "edit" button. This will take you to a new screen where you can change things. There should be a menu towards the top of this screen which says "Log type." Get that drop-down menu, and change from "note" to "found it." Simple, no? Well, it is once you've done it a couple of times.
  20. Yeah, what he said. I think putting in a charger would create too much heat for the circuitry in there. There are no vent holes in the case so that it will be water/dust tight. However, on the up side, the batteries really last a long time in the 60, so you will have time to use your home charger between uses.
  21. Alas, I bought it online. And, I've had it over a month and used it enough to go through several sets of batteries (I had it on a road trip). I'm afraid I'm probably going to have to send it to Garmin. I've got an e-mail into them right now, since "Why has my unit just totally and suddenly quit working?" is not one of the listed FAQs. I really hope I get called back to work today (there is a real possibility). It stinks being unemployed and not having a working GPS unit.
  22. The same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. Yes, they're supposed to remove the cache(s), not just abandon them. I went ahead and logged my find. It was there. I found it. I e-mailed the cache owner and told him it was still there and in good shape. I guess that's all I can do.
  23. My main symptom was extreme myalgia. I did not feel ill or bad in any way if I was just sitting in one spot. But ask me to actually do any work, and I was SO tired, it was unbelievable. Apparently, 80% of people get a "bull's eye" rash which grows larger and larger at the site of the tick bite. I evidently am in the 20% who don't. Having no energy was my only symptom.
  24. I feel your pain. I got Lyme Disease last summer. It sucked. Luckily, I did my homework and went to the doctor basically telling them I had Lyme Disease. They believed me and gave me the strong, broad spectrum anti-biotics. That knocked out the symptoms within a couple of days, and I haven't had any trouble after the three weeks worth of pills they gave me. I had been around a lot of ticks in my life also. I can't ever recall having one become attached for more than a couple hours. Of course the one in my life that I missed for a couple of days had to be the one carrying the Lyme Disease. Glad you caught it early. You'll be fine.
  25. Nope. Nothing. It's like the power has been disconnected. No button pressed in any order does anything. I've tried several different sets of batteries. How strange, since it was working just fine this morning.
