  1. I can understand the advantage of having the limit set to 2500 caches a day instead of 5 x 500 cache PQ's. That way, those who want 5 x 500 PQ can have it their way and those wanting large amounts of data easily can. Personally, I've started an off-line database (for my own use only, don't worry []) and being able to give 5 days dates (I use the date rather than area, ie 1/1/2000-1/1/2003 etc and have now got the complete list of dates for the whole of the UK. Obviously this will change as I find more and more are archived, but it's currently at just shy of 100 PQ's. This means that every day I need to delete the 5 most recently run queries and add the the 5 oldest queries. It is a pain, but it means I can define the data a lot more accurately on my own PC rather than through GC.com. I wouldn't and don't see any problem in a change from 2500/day rather than 5 pqs@500 each/day. It means all users will get and have the ability to run their queries how it best suits them. I expect a lot of people to say how ludicrous an idea this is, but if you read my post again and think, maybe you'll see the little difference it makes to the "traditional" users and significantly easier to those embracing different ways of getting their data
  2. I don't get why that doesn't work for you. I just entered those coordinates and they come up in the right place - very near to upper st giles street which has significance to the puzzle (I tried and failed with the puzzle as my girlfriend was at uni there, unfortunately she's moved unis now so won't have chance to have another go! If you are getting the wrong page still, click the "link" button at the top right hand corner of the map and post it here. Perhaps we can see what's up then. EDIT: just worked it out. entering it as 52.37752 is incorrect. the two formats (Hours and decimal Minutes (n52 37.752) and decimal hours are different. entering as hours decimal minutes is fine with google, but if for whatever reason you need to convert between the two then you'll need to divide the 37.752 by 60 etc In short: 12.05761 enter as the n12 34.567 format unless there's some unknown requirement for decimal degrees in which case do it as 12.(34.567/60) = 12.5761
  3. If you go to maps.google.com the current formats I've had work are N12 34.567 W001 23.456 and also 12.decimal format, 34.decimals You can normally copy and paste these from the other formats and then edit them as you need, but I think most coords will be in the first format Datum is the "format" if you like - the geocaching site uses as default (as does most other applications you'll come into contact with) WGS84 - another "datum" could be british grid ps is it by any chance the quatermass cache?
  4. For premium members it would be good to have a button (similar to the download waypoints one on the cache list) where it would add each cache to the bookmark of your choice. I've started adding new caches to bookmarks so i can be alerted when they are found - i know there's the watch list but its a lot easier to delete multiple caches from the bookmark than it is the watch list! What do people think?
  5. Assuming they still run on american time, mine were set up very early in the morning (american time) so should have ran by now but not had anything yet
  6. Yes we all know you're insomniacs It was (Weds) 5am Pacific time when I ran them though, so that's not it It might not make any difference but I always have mine to automatically uncheck once run. I put in 5 this morning and they ran instantly (well give or take a few mins!). They're now automatically unchuck?! again. I doubt it'll make any difference but thought would say just incase:P
  7. This looks interesting. I notice from your profile you're from the south east....are you using the southeast map set or the whole UK one? (ie does the software split for what you want or just send everything that's there?)
  8. When Opencaching was started the Germans got it done, while this side of the pond, got to the prototype stage, but didn't finish. It's probably possible to get an ISO image of that prototype database. I've never given up on the concept of a cacher owned and controlled site, but I don't have the programming skills to build the site, and not much time to do more than pay the bills on some net addresses that will be handy. Other sites: Terracaching.com Navicache.com Hungary, France, and Russia have their own sites. I honestly can't see why so many people complain about this site - honestly, doing better than this will be so much effort it's just not worth it. GC.com costs next to nothing to use, and I've never had an issue with it, or the way it's run. I've got plenty of software running on my Windows Mobile device that gets me to the tupperware, including GCz which can access the database without Pocket Queries. I can't see why it would be worth the extensive effort to set up a "rival" site - I recently joined Navicache to see if I was missing out on anything, and the site is dreadful compared to this one. There are hundreds and hundreds of caches within a few miles of my house here, and on Navicache they can be counted on the fingers of one hand. The site is also extremely un-user-friendly. I know people have issues with GC.com, but on a day-to-day basis, it's very, very usable and does the job just fine. If you really want to do something to make caching better and improve the technology, volunteer to help out here. I can't help but feel that a lot of attempts to start new sites hark back to the "good old days" when, to be frank, caching was somewhat elitist, and there's a lot of resentment that more people are into it now. Lee Whilst I can't confirm this having not run a packet inspector on my windows mobile phone using GCZ, I believe that the only way the program can legitimately get the data is by screen scraping which is prohibited by the terms of use of Geocaching.com. I've toyed with the idea, but screen scraping will place a larger burden on the servers than opening up the API would.
  9. Whilst I have looked at other caching sites to see what they have to offer, Geocaching.com is by far the best. That said I don't think the attitudes of the mods was really called for, the guy has an idea, let him have his idea As a developer though I believe that open API access would make Geocaching.com even better (yes i know traffic costs etc are a huge issue). We'll see anyway - Geocaching.com are doing a great job
  10. Even in USB transfer mode? how do i put it in usb transfer mode ? The venture HC does not have a mode which allows it to be mounted as a drive. You need to use mapsource, easygps, memory map etc
  11. The beta started in Germany but now is a European beta- including the UK. I had some problems to start with but now after a few days it seems to be ok. I've read on either this forum or another, i forget which that the account has to be activated which should happen automatically the first time you sign into live, for whatever reasons this wasn't happening and could be an explanation for the problems i had. It seems to now work fine though, quite useful. I haven't used it to track down any caches yet, just loaded them into it using the cache->download function. There you can choose either 5, 25 or 50 caches and it downloads all their locations and some basic info, after that selecting the cache allows you to download the description, hint etc.. When the download function wasn't working for me i tried loading a gpx pocket query into it (rename to poi.gpx and place in the relevant folder) This ended up putting all caches around llandudno in a line one above another about 50 miles off the coast from Hull! Not sure why, perhaps this function hasn't been adapted for UK long/lats. (since the coords were -3 etc) Anyway it seems quite a cool idea especially with seeing other cachers on-line, if anyone is using this on a regular basis let me know and we can see what the program can really do
  12. My experience exactly - it returned a big fat nothing, in the middle of central London where there's caches everywhere. I'd like it to work though, as it's the sort of thing I've wanted for ages. Any hints/tips? I tried running it with Memory Map in the background as has been suggested elsewhere, but still nothing. Lee I got mine to work eventually, although it still complained about incorrect password. It only let me download 5 at a time, as i wasn't a premium member. it offered me a 10 day trial but since im a premium member on geocaching i didn't want to accept 10 days since there's nowhere mentioning a separate premium member scheme. I normally use google maps to get the gps signal and keep that running, although it got the signal on it's own this time.

  14. I just tried it with Tytn II and I can't get it to download any caches Also it keeps mentioning about upgrading to premium....is that a different premium membership to the Geocaching.com premium membership? I am a premium member for that so it confused me Looks a good idea though
  15. Ah, I've got the same problem (sort of) the WAAS icon i've never seen appear! I live in North England and i've heard that it is because we don't have as good coverage (although i can get down to 3m accuracy). Where are people from and have you got WAAS? I've also got the Venture HC
  16. With the Garmin maps it is possible (with some maps anyway) to request a second code through the "myGarmin" site. I got a Venture HC from eBay with the topo GB maps and then when my brother got a mapping Garmin i managed to request a second code through myGarmin and so we can have the maps on both devices. I must admit though, had my Venture HC not come with the topo maps I wouldn't have bought them. There are a number of alternatives; talky toasters maps, and some others too. I don't get why they have to be so expensive the maps
  17. As i mentioned they don't include the maps (GSAK includes a google map containing the one cache you've selected) Although EasyGPS will show all the way points (without the map background) That way you can choose them from the route pattern you may be able to see(depending which ones you've chose. Also to remember is that once you're at one Geocache (so long as you've added them as a Geocache) it'll show you the next closest when you click "found". Also the geocache waypoint option on the device can either sort them by closest or by name (control this by pressing the menu button(left hand side, bottom button) when in the Geocache waypoint menu)
  18. Hi, Welcome to the forum! There's a number of things to consider - i've got the same device as you and have to say i've use the routes function once. I found that it's intended more for walking than finding Geocaches. The reason being is as soon as you get to the coordinates it sets off to the next one in the route. This means that unless you find the cache straight away you need to go through the menu, navigate to the cache and then jump back into your route. However if you're still wanting to do it this way then there is Openstreetmap (http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=216453) This is an open source map. I think there is a way of getting it into Mapsource, i've not tried though - i'm sure if there's away someone will post details soon. Next thing i wanted to say is mapsource, in my opinion, is poor. there are far better waypoint, route and track management programs - EasyGPS, GSAK to name but too. Granted these do not (to the degree you want) include a map however you may find, once you've found a few caches with the device, that this isn't necessary. If you've got any questions about the Venture HC or anything, just ask
  19. I have the TyTN II as well and agree that the GPS can be poor at times. I started off Geocaching with this phone so perhaps as i had nothing to compare it to at the time i was quite happy with it - I find that if you keep walking it keeps the heading etc and also updates the distance. Also using Google Maps to get a lock and keep that running while using whatever other application does help. I've also used an external bluetooth GPS (from my old phone) and this does work a lot better, and has the added advantage that when u suspend the phone, if you keep the bluetooth GPS on it gets the signal back straight away when you bring the PDA out of suspend
  20. It saves it as a Geocache for me and i have the venture hc. What icon is it showing up as in the waypoints menu? Remember the geocaches by default shows you the 20/30 or so nearest, so if you're adding one a bit away then it won't show yet....you can find it though by going to geocaches, pressing the menu button and choosing find by name
