  1. On my TT (One XL) I do notice you can't find caches that are beyond a certain distance - they just don't show up - not sure why. If I put in a city and then search for caches it will show them. If I have a route planned I can find caches 'near destination'. Check if the caches have loaded by searching for a city (place) where you know there should be caches from the PQ. 2. If you follow my instructions in the 'how to' doc it works fine. It assumes you are using Big Wolf's macro not the native GSAK one. 4. I have a Magellan 710 and have done all software updates using Magellan's Vantage Point software. That has always worked fine. Please note that VP only works on a PC not Mac. I can only think the actual file download is corrupt in some way. At the bottom of the software download screen is a contact Magellan option. Have you tried that? Finally here is a link to the Magellan eXplorist forum thread on firmware issues with the 510. I've not read the whole thing but it seems you may not be alone with this problem. You may find some help there. http://www.exploristforum.com/forums/software-issues/firmware-update-510/ Chris Graculus Volunteer UK Reviewer for geocaching.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- UK Geocaching Wiki Geocaching.com Help Center UK Geocaching Information & Resources website
  5. From the main screen select Tools, then Settings, then Units. In that menu you should find the coordinate and map datum. It should be HDD MM.MMM (may be shown as HDD MM.MM). Map datum should be WGS84. I've written a review of the GC, explaining how the features work (mainly for geocaching). You may find it useful. It's on the home page of my UK Info and Resources website - link under my signature. 6. Looking at your cache finds, you're based in the UK. There's an excellent map link you can use to show an Ordnance Survey map of a location (Streetmap). Most local authorities use the OS maps and prefer the OS grid reference. You can then give them a direct link to the map so they can see where the location is. You can enter coords into the link in ANY format including UK post code. When Streetmap opens just copy the URL and email to your contact. http://benchmarks.org.uk/map.php You should also take a look at the UK Geocaching Wiki (link under my signature). We've got quite a few landowners and land areas in the UK where permission is required. You'll find all this info in the Wiki. 7. This is a direct link to the document I wrote (which the others have referred to above). It's a PDF document that will open with Adobe Reader on your PC. It explains how to do the PQ and then transfer the files to the Garmin GPS (any model). http://www.follow-the-arrow.co.uk/resources/files/paperless_garmin.pdf Chris Graculus Volunteer UK Reviewer for geocaching.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- UK Geocaching Wiki Geocaching.com Help Center UK Geocaching Information & Resources website
  8. Earlier this year the event guideline was updated to add the requirement that events must include both a start time and end time. This applies to any event no matter where it is located. In the UK, events at campsites are popular especially during Mega events. These are often referred to as ‘camping events’ or ‘Mega camping’ even though there are no such event types. The Help Center has an article about events at campsites and certain requirements organisers may need to meet with regard to campsite access. Any event at a campsite (including those at a Mega event) will need to have a start and end time (the Help Center article has been updated with this information). Event stacking is a term used to describe multiple events at the same location that follow on from each other. The event guideline says this, “Events with several elements, a sequence of events, or events that are near the same time or location and intended for the same audience should be submitted as a single event.” With the need to have a start and end time it means multiple events during a camping weekend may not be publishable. For example; if the event at the campsite is to run from Friday morning to Monday lunchtime and those are the start and end times then no other event would be allowed at the campsite during this time. Sometimes event organisers may want a ‘welcome drinks’ event on the Friday evening, a ‘barbeque’ on the Saturday and perhaps a ‘farewell breakfast’ on the Monday morning. These would not be allowed. What organisers would need to do is arrange the event times so one of these becomes the main event, for example the Saturday evening BBQ. 9. I bought the GC specifically to try out and write the review. I then sold it - sadly because I really like it but couldn't justify buying it and keeping it. So I've not seen the latest software. 10. Couple of things may help you. I've written a detailed review of the GC, it's features (compass, maps etc) and how to use it for geocaching. I've also written a 'how to' document on doing PQ's and loading them into any Magellan GPS including the GC - without using any other software! Just your PC and the GC. The document has screen shots for Windows but the process is the same with a Mac, you get the files from the PQ and just copy them to the GC. The document does explain about using Magellan's Vantage Point software but that doesn't work on a Mac. You'll find the review on the home page of my resource site and the 'how to' document at the bottom of the page on Paperless caching. 11. I've got an eXplorist 710 which came with European maps which are pretty good. I think if you buy one in the USA it comes with US/Canada maps. Outside of these areas it should have a pretty basic basemap. The European ones do allow you to add additional maps but they are expensive to buy. I'm not aware of any other maps - such as Open Street Maps - that you can load onto them. 12. The Magellan doesn't read the 'found' status from the Pocket Query (or cache if you just send an individual one). So they always appear as 'unfound'. The only way it can show them as 'found' is if you've actually marked it as such on the GPS. But.... if you then delete the cache and load a new PQ any found in that way will appear as unfound again. It is a bit of an annoying feature of Magellan. Garmin GPS can read the status and display caches correctly. 13. I've done some screen shots of the Garmin topo maps, Garmin OS GB Discoverer (both of which are quite expensive) and Talky Toasters Open Street maps. You can see the differences between them. The OS maps are excellent and I think the best in terms of features shown. But they are expensive and you can't zoom in too far because they go 'fuzzy'. No much good for towns. TT's OSM maps are much better for towns etc. I use both on my Oregon and switch between them as needed. http://www.follow-the-arrow.co.uk/resources/gps.html#maps Chris Graculus Volunteer UK Reviewer for geocaching.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- UK Geocaching Wiki Geocaching.com Help Center UK Geocaching Information & Resources website

    Frames

Not all HTML code is supported on the cache page. If you add any tags that aren't supported they are automatically removed - like Frames. You can use tables if you want to layout the text. 15. Use the break tag instead of p. This will give you a single line break not double. The page in my resource site (linked to above and also in my signature) explains about the P and BR tags. <br /> Be aware that some more complex HTML doesn't work on the cache page. You'll see a list when you are editing the page of what is allowed. Also note that people view caches pages on phones and GPS screens. Whilst you may have a fantastically colorful and eye watering catching page in your web browser it may not look like that on a smaller screen Chris Graculus Volunteer UK Reviewer for geocaching.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- UK Geocaching Wiki Geocaching.com Help Center UK Geocaching Information & Resources website

  17. The page in my resource site about GPS receivers explains what maps you can use on a Garmin or Magellan GPS - UK specific. Talky Toasters maps based on Open Street Maps are excellent and not at all expensive. The Garmin OS maps are very expensive. And, as stated you can't transfer the maps from Memory Map to the GPS. But.. if you use GSAK you can load Pocket Queries into Memory Map to display the caches on your PC. Details also on my site, the page on Paperless caching. 18. This is the bookmark list for the CM series. It does show the distance and direction from your home coords - OK not that good as you have to scroll through them all, but you can create a PQ from the bookmark list. 19. How to do a Pocket Query and transfer the files to a Magellan GPS (including the GC). Click here for a simple to read guide from my resources site (at the bottom of the page). 21. Vantage Point can grab all the PQ's you currently have in your account. Is it doing that but manually you are not adding them all? 22. It is correct you cannot place caches in current BT phone boxes (see this entry in the UK Geocaching Wiki) but old decommissioned boxes are fine. As for permission? As suggested, try the local parish council. If you do put such a cache in place please make sure you explain in a reviewer note when you submit the cache it is a decommissioned one and not an active BT one. Otherwise you'll get the cache back again with a polite note pointing out you can't put caches in BT phone boxes Chris Graculus Volunteer UK Reviewer for geocaching.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- UK Geocaching Wiki Geocaching.com Help Center UK Geocaching Information & Resources website
  23. I've written a detailed (and easy to read) guide on how to do this with both Magellan or Garmin GPS. On my resource site, page on Paperless caching. The guide is for Windows 7 but the process is the same with Windows 8. Basics are: Download your PQ. Unzip it. Just open the zip file in File Explorer, right click the file and use Windows built in zip program to unzip it. You end up with two files: xxxx.gpx and xxxx-wpts.gpx. Plug in the GC to the PC and it will appear in File Explorer as a 'drive' with a drive letter assigned - it will look something like this: Magellan(F). Just copy the xxxx.gpx file to the Geocaches folder and xxxx-wpts.gpx file to the Waypoints folder. Eject the GC - Right click on it in File Explorer and select Eject and unplug it. You're done.
