  1. Travis, remove #6 GC2ZN03 Beban Needs a CITO by Fregley & Pinky (D:1.5/T:2 Traditional Cache Micro) from the route. It is disabled (it's missing) and I contacted the owner to see if it would be fixed by the NCM and she answered that she was probably going to archive it.

  2. So xstitcher stopped by Smokin' George's and chatted with George about seating capacity today. He can only seat 35 max. :( Is there anyway to figure out who plans to stop by on Friday? Remember, George's is fairly busy on a Friday night so there may already be customers there

Not a concern. I always play Friday night very loose and casual, and they told me that by the time we're scheduled to arrive for dinner, their Friday night crowd should have died down. It's not an official event, it's just me showing up, somewhere fun for dinner, and maybe getting a few last minute bits of advice from folks who started parts of the route a day early.

The pre-event diner is really a relic of CMs from years ago, when people had everything loaded and printed out before they left home, and connectivity was only for those rare few who had heavy laptops and could navigate hotel network cabling. It's much less important now.

However, I do appreciate xstitcher checking it out for us. They seat 35? That's six more people than the current number of "will attends" for the Saturday dinner event. I think we'll be fine. Based on past experience, with 29 will-attends 10 days before the event, I think we'll be lucky to have a dozen of us at Friday's unofficial dinner.

OK. It has been 7 years since we last attended a cache machine and I was unsure on the turnout for Friday nights festivities. Just trying to be a little proactive to make sure there weren't any wee surprises. We are quite familiar with the restaurant both dining in and taking out so it's all good. B)

  4. For our American visitors: Like most of our neighbouring states, BC has a distracting driving law. However, here it also extends to other electronic devices such as hand held GPS receivers, iPods and mp3 players. (It also can be used for drinking or eating while driving but I have not heard of this aspect of the law being enforced anywhere)

You can be ticketed for just holding a cell phone or GPS while driving. This includes use of or holding either while stopped at a traffic light or other control point. My advice is that you have a passenger do all the navigating for the driver while the vehicle is moving from cache to cache. The present fine is $167 CAD but this morning it is expected that the government will make an announcement raising this amount of the initial fine with probably a graduated raising of the amount for repeat offenders.

This is a result of an incident earlier this year when the RCMP pulled over a driver for distracted driving and found that the driver had 12 previous tickets. The driver has since lost their drivers license and predicated the review of the present fine.

  5. I would make #32 GC67RCB Harbourfront Walkway TB Hotel #28 as it would be easier getting it from the same parking as #27 GC53C4 Newcastle Views. The elevation difference between the road and pathway is quite large at #32's location and to access it from the road requires you to backtrack on foot to some stairs near the bridge you just drove over which put you at the foot bridge that you can take from the parking area for #27.

Then bump the next 4 caches up 1 number and continue to #33 and #34. The parking and access for these 2 caches is towards #34.

#37 will require minimum 1 litre of water to retrieve.

There should be public washrooms available at 40 to 48 and a pit toilet at 50 to 59

For #46,47,48, a 1 meter tide at 11:00 should be passable. It is about the 'Highest' Low tide that will allow the crossing without too wet of a crossing. Best to have semi waterproof foot wear though.

  6. When I open gc.com and look at the map page before signing in, there are about 15 maps to choose from. After I sign in, there are no choices at all. I can only switch between 'map' and 'satellite'. I'm using Win 7 and Firefox 21. How do I get the choices?

Once you are logged on and have the Geocaching map open, there will be a thick line with an arrow running down the left side of the map. Click on it. At the bottom of this menu is a button marked "Set Map Preferences" Click on that, You should now have 2 boxes. one marked Google (Default setting for premium members) And Leaflet Click on the select button for Leaflet and you will get the multiple maps. To switch back to Google, just repeat the actions and select Google.

  7. This cacher may be from the Nanaimo area on the Island. I have made an inquiry to a cacher I know that may know this person.... We will see if that may get some action.

Was wondering what was up...Have we overworked mtn-man? Does he need a break from us crazy cachers?

And how does one get the job?

    I believe you are 'invited'

  9. Look Ive done all I can.. I cant seem to get the topo map to the gps unit. Topo-2008 ---Garmin530hcx

Do you have Mapsource street maps loaded on the unit already? If you do, you need to turn those maps off to see the Topo's.

  10. We went to a cache event in Victoria BC put on by a visiting Ozzie. Listening to his caching stories and just generally living in the place with several of the top poisonous snakes and spiders in the world made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Would love to visit Australia, not sure I want to hike or cache there

  11. I seem to be having trouble uploading pictures today. I have done over 1400 to date but tonight for some reason it says it's contacting geocaching.com then after quite awhile then a box opens saying page contains no data.... any one else had this happen to them?

  12. So, our local paper here in Nanaimo, the Daily News, had a glossy insert from Travel Alberta called 'Family Fun 2007'. Inside along with the usual touristy things was an article on Geocaching called 'Hi-tech treasure hunting'

Obviously some provinces see a link to geocaching and spending money.

    Anyone else see the insert?

  13. Most of the changes involved plumbing - non-obvious changes. We'll put together a list of the more obvious enhancements like Friends Lists and changes to the cache details page.

Well that's a heck of a water pipe you installed Jeremy. Everytime I click on something it comes in a flood, not the trickle that it sometimes did before.... :) I wish you had told us we would need more towels

    And maybe a pump.

  14.

That would be great *(approved & posted in 15min) & I'm not saying whats working already isn't good or bad, I'm suggesting, what could be done to just allow members to post up instantly New caches?

maybe a members based rating, members who have already posted geo's & have a review or rating symbol / ? that would be something to go off of, after so many member approved good caches that have been found / verified, "just allow them to instantly post up their new geo's."

    ------------- :)

But that won't work, the cache approvers have to verify that the cache is being placed by a cacher who lives near it for cache maintainence and make sure it is far enough away from the next nearest cache. (you could place a cache within a few feet of the final location of a puzzle cache and not know it unless you've done the puzzle.)

  15. Just got this screen when I tried to access my accounts page:

  16. Can you give us an example?

    GC53C4

This cache, the picture of the rock is a spoiler, now you don't have a choice but to look at it.

This is one of our caches, GC11NBA

I had the 3 pictures as links just for people to look at if they choose to, no spoilers, but now they are open and I'm sure will slow down loading to a PDA or a cell phone.

    GCTF60

And this cache has a picture of the Tag you are looking for that was a spoiler, but now you see it with out a choice...

Oh you guys are very very good, you had the glitch fixed by the time I had the explanation typed out and posted.... I bow down in amazement in the general direction of Seattle.... LOL
