  1. A very cool person in my local town donated a Garmin Vista to the library. It is available at the circulation desk and can be checked out for a week. This unit has been borrowed by individuals, Scout Troops, and a nearby police department. I used this Garmin for about six months, checking it out every couple of weeks. I would encourage everyone interested to consider this option. Many can benefit and you can always borrow it back if you need to (+ the tax break).
  2. This is one of my favorite theme caches. I have yet to hit it, but it's way up on my list. Currency Exchange
  3. Unfortunately localhikes.com has their fill of reporters. You will be placed on a waiting list.
  4. Nope, it's not your Elmo. Keep looking. Tobi
  5. According to Garmin's website, the Venture is the "lowest" of the Etrex line that ships with a cable, the Yellow, Camo, and Summit don't include the cable. I'm sure there are other units that don't come with a data cable, too. You can add the Geko 201 to the list. I made my own out of an old credit card from instructions I found on the web. Very easy and very inexpensive. I'd recommend it for anyone that is interested in trying it. Here is one of the links I used. Homebrew Data Cable
  6. How do you make those? It's pretty complex but if you want to give it a try here's a link. Shrinking Coins
  7. I'm going to start leaving small change in the micros. Now if I can only keep them from falling out of the holes in my pockets.
  8. Here's a link that will take you to all kinds of good locations and information. Resources for determining your latitude and longitude
  9. It's not the "Global Survey Marker Hunt Site". Benchmarks are a bonus. It took a lot of time and effort by volunteers to set up the benchmark section and for that we are fortunate. Perhaps you should begin a coordinated effort to establish a Trig listing for the UK. I'm sure that it would be appreciated by those across the pond.
  10. Our team loves the 201. Set on WAAS we seem to average around 19' accuracy but set on normal it drops down to 14'. On more than one occasion we have literally been standing on the cache when we would ground out. A couple of sets of rechargeable batteries are mandatory as the AAA size dry out quickly. Another+ is the built in games that have kept the kids busy upon occasion.
  11. Contacting CL about the Mowry Cache.
  12. Cell phone GPS comes through again. This should be happening more often around here now that the 911 system in Rhode Island is able to use the GPS coordinates. I read something in the paper within the last several weeks that they were enhancing the system and had the entire state covered. Just in time for these teenagers. Rescue
  13. They're nice . . . . How do you make them ? I work in the costume jewelry industry. I came up with a design that I liked then sculpted it out of a block of tin. Once I had the original made it was sent to a caster for mass production. After receiving the castings I hand polished some and sent them out to be plated gold and silver. The others (pewter) were sent out to be chemically tarnished and then buffed to a satin finish and covered with a lacquer. All this taken care of I glued in the stones and got ready to stash them in the caches. It seems like a lot of work but when combined with other production runs it's not that bad. I think that my cost was slightly over $1 each w/o the original model cost as I made that myself.
  14. I just started placing these hat pins in caches last week. I know of only one that has been retrieved as of yet. I will be using the gold one as a FTF pin when I finish placing a cache. The silver is for those who find one of my caches. The pewter is what we have been placing in the caches that we find. On the back of the pins I have engraved "Midway Cafe" but I may print out a business card to attach them to, just have to find the time.
  15. Here is a variation on the smashed coins. Coin Shrinking The only catch is that you need a lot of power.
  16. You have to make it yourself. It's easy! Step1. Fill a bowl with water. Step 2. Place bowl if front of fire and wait until it is no longer wet. Step 3. Place dry bowl into freezer and wait. In a few hours (depending on the size of the bowl) you will have your dry ice.
  17. Here you go: 30 liter coke bottle ROTFLMAO!!! Where can I get a bottle of rum to match?
  18. Ah, What fun you can have when bored! Lobster Barbie It brings a whole new meaning to the term Travel Bug.
  19. We came up with a lot of hits but the best two were as follows; 1- Deify Macaw (All bow before the all powerful bird). 2- Am Wife Cady (Now I know why my back hurts).
  20. Wow! Where can I get a 20 liter soda bottle?
  21. This TB/traveling cache just moved through Rhode Island For The Love Of The Game.... Though I didn't pick it up it did seem like a lot of fun.
  22. Just tell him that the answer is "42" and don't lose any more sleep.
  23. Hi, How very cool of you to be watching out for the bug and your roomie! Try a post in the South and Southeast forum. That is where the folks from the Austin area will be looking for local info. Good luck and have fun in Maine.
