  2. quote:Originally posted by PatrickM: the small screen on the Vista makes downloading topo maps a pretty useless feature. You can't view a large enough area for navigating. Any software that lets you download waypoints/routes used in conjunction with a real topo map will do you fine. No, no, no ... my friend ... it is very useful ... I use the Vista with my topos loaded for the area I'm backpacking in all the time. It is very useful ... While I'm not happy with the detail of the Mapsource Topos ... it gives a very good visual reference to the waypoints that I put in the GPS and the Maps (From Maptech) that I print out to carry. I actually print my trail maps back and front on 3X5's that I laminated for pocket reference ... these have the waypoints marked that are in the GPS. If I need a wider reference area ... I have the larger map in my pack. Also very useful ... granted it is small, but a quick zoom out can give you that quick wide shot you might need ... but again ... you should always carry maps IMHO.

  4. If I log into the Geocaching site ...not the forums ... does that count as my last logged in visit ... as far as the cookies on the forums?
  5. Thanks ... that would explain it ... I haven't been logging out ... just another question ... while in the forums ... do they refresh at a certain rate ... or is it real time that other posts show up?
  6. Just a observation ... on the new forums ... it apppears that the bulb (to the left) is Yellow if the forum as been accessed ... not necessarily logged since your last visit. Is this actually how it's set up. Same deal on the folders within the forum ... they seem to go yellow just because they were viewed (judging by the counts) not when they have been added to. IMHO ... if this is the case and not my mistaken observation ... wouldn't it be more beneficial to only go yellow when there is actually a new log added?
  7. quote:Originally posted by Sea_Dog:... If you do your homework before you head out, you'll know about the fee in advance. Not necessarily ... while true when you are close by a cache ... but if it's an area further away ... there might not be an easy or quick way to find this information ... But so far every cache I been too that has this ... the cacher places that information in the description. Another good thing is to post hours ... that can help a cacher plan his trip. Nothing worst than to hit a cache only to find out the park closed an hour earlier. Had you know ... you could have changed your route. I know this is a problem in NC ... a lot of small community parks don't have anything but the sign on their gate to provide this info. No web page, no number to call ...
  8. quote:Originally posted by harrkev: I would have no problem with it, PROVIDED that you clearly state in the cache description that an entrace fee is required. Then, people have a choice on whether or not to seek it. That would be the way to do it ... just make sure it's stated on the page or there's a link to the park's webpage for more info ...
  9. quote:Originally posted by Jeremy Irish: ... Markwell, do you have a link somewhere with info I can add as well? Jeremy Does Markwell have a link ... Is the Pope Catholic? Is a frog's butt water tight? Do wild bears sleep in the woods?

  11. quote:Originally posted by rdw: Go to the unofficial http://www.insidecorner.com/geocaching/stats/index.cgi site and search logs by username. It's sometimes easier because it is arranged by most recent log date instead of the date the cache was placed. rdw Yeah ... but I kind of like staying on one site instead of going all over the place for information. I'm an old fart ... what can I say

  13. quote:Originally posted by mcb: So is anyone actually going to vote that they joined just for the Mocaches after all the arguments? The question seems a bit loaded given the present mood of the forum readers. At least you didn't put an option to not join at all. Thanks mcb Wouldn't that kind of be the point? I doubt if anyone joined for MOC's. It's just a vocal minority that seems to have taken them on as the next Jihad.

  15. quote:Originally posted by Jeremy Irish: That is the Elite Charter Membership, coming for $30/month and available soon. (Heh. Just kidding. Notice how everyone latches on the $30/yr to make their point?) Jeremy ... But then again ... The Grand Exalted Potentate Membership ... for $30.29/yr plus a one time setup fee of 2 AA's ... was a bargain IMHO

  17. Good points ... although, on the hints ... less than clear clues ... the kind that sometimes make sense only after you've solved the puzzle ... have their place as well (actually I kind of like some of the one's I've found). Spelling ... some how I knew when I clicked your profile ... you would be a teacher ... so "thunk you fur your consern and i'll treye to du butter."

I knew it wouldn't be long .... Although I thought you might have had couple of good encounter stories for us!

Also discovered you can turn the compass on and off by holding down the page button on the top right side for a few seconds. .... Well I've had my Vista since they came out ... & the light doesn't turn on when I change pages ... no matter what the setting is ... and the compass on and off button is actually marked on the VISTA (front) and is documented in the manual (as pitiful as it is)
