  1. We go with my two boys (6 & 4) and they usually love it! We stick to hikes that are less than a mile from the parking. Although longer than 1/2 mile, the 4 year old gets tired on the way back and dh ends up carrying him on his shoulders. When it is just me and the boys, we stick to short (.30) ones. They love finding catipillars, mushrooms, talking to cows, finding 10 point bucks, bever trees and searching for the cache. We call it treasure hunting, cause that's what they consider it Some days I'll get a NO, but I drag them in the car anyway and when we get there, they'll be all for finding it. We're getting both of them a small compas for their stockings, since they love to use my GPS. They both have walking sticks too, so that's a cool thing for them! It's a great experience for them and I think they will really treasure it for their lifetime!!
  2. I wonder if it wasn't a memorial for someone who died on the trail? Like people put those fake flower crosses on the sides of the road where someone had dies in a car accident. I've seen stuffed animals and such by them. So maybe this person was a runner or jogger who died there??
  3. Wow cool stuff there in the link! I had my camera when we found the bloody stuff at first and kinda thought of taking pics, but decided didn't really need to. But then when we found the chicken with the cops, I thought it would be cool to scrapbook, lol. But I didn't have my camera then, and not sur ehow the cops would have liked me taking pics of the evidence ya know. So yeah kinda wish I had pics to share, but kinda glad I don't.
  4. I love ordering from them. Last time I got some of their flashlight keychains, tool kit keychains and a couple other cool trade items!
  5. Our one grocery store sells these hedge balls. I tried putting some in my house, but they didn't work. I guess they're not good with box elder and lady bugs, because they kept coming in and even sitting on the balls.
  6. I'm not afraid of dead chickens, in fact we're havig it for dinner. It's the site of a real chicken, feathers and all with no head that kinda freaks me out! And the fact that all we first found was bloody clothes was quite creepy! And I don't think the people that do these kind of things care about picking up after themselves...or atleast this guy didn't!
  7. Welcome to NY I thought! We're out here caching in Harriman State park by the Silver mines and had our travel all ready to go. We start with an easy .14 hike up the mountain. Get to the top and start looking around where we think it is. Supposed to be behind a big fallen tree that intersects with another one. Well we look behind it and find a pile of bloody clothes! There was a whole set of clothes, shoes, socks ect plus a smaller box and a garbage bag. It was all fresh things, because there were no bugs on it, nor where their leaves fallen on it. Luckily I did not see a body, but we decided not to look any farther incase we did find one. Also were quite scared to find someone in the woods with us! We had myself, my husband, and our 2 smaller kids, plus my mother in law (her first caching). So we called 911 on our cell phone and told them. We hike out of the mountain and waitied for the police. DH and I went back up to show them where it was. They looked in the box and found some nasty stuff! We started looking around more, felt a bit safer when they had a gun I looked down and saw a headless dead, chicken! So I said, okay, we found the source of the blood, now where is the naked man??? The park cops said they get people who come to the parks and do their weird rituals and stuff! Thing is the chicken was still body temperature. So we must have just missed this guy. And when we came in there was one car in the parking lot, and I couldn't remember much about it to help the cops. Figure the chicken was brought in the box, and the bag had the guys extra clothes in it. Sadly we never found the cache and it put a big damper on the rest of the day!
  8. Dh and kids. DH rides a Cannondale. DS (4 years) rides on his little green bike with the gator tagalong thingy. And DS (6 years) rides his Target bike no training wheels. They are both getting upgraded at Christmas to new bikes and bigger sizes. This is me on my Specialized. And the only reason we don't have our helmets on is because we went camping this weekend and they got left at home, oops! Luckily we only went on the paved trails. And I'm getting a handlebar mount in my stocking this year.
  9. Is there anywhere for free, I can enter and address and it will give me the coordinates?? Without traveling to the place first that is as well. With Rand McNally I know I can enter the coords and get the address, but I can't seem to get it to reverse. Thanks!!
  10. As another female cacher who on occassion has done cahces by herself, I don't like doing them alone for the fact it's more fun with others. But when I do go alone, I take into account my surrondings very well. If something seems funny, I don't go. I also take the short easy ones when I am alone. I have my cell phone on me and a small pocket knife (although not sure what good that will do me, lol). There is one cache in my area which I woudl like to do but a female was sexually assulted there a short time ago and the guy has not been caught, so my guard has been up and I will not go to that one by myself! It is also along a riding trail I used to ride on when my kids were in school. Not anymore I say don't go alone, but if you do, just be very aware of what's going on and listen to what your guts tells you!
  11. There is a cache in our area which is just that. Some old car WAY out in the middle of the woods in the bottom of a vavine. One has to wonder how they got it in there! Oh and the hint is "a tetnus shot lasts for 10 years".
  12. We use this to get to most of them... Or we use this... Then these...
  13. You saw what I believe to be Mealybugs! http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/r107300511.html
  14. I always decode. I let my son read it and see if he can find the cache using the hint.
  15. How can you be sure it is a cacher who drove off? And not someone who pulled over to read a map or take a phone call or something? I wouldn't ask either of the cachers who drove off the side, instead make it in bold print in your directions. You might upset them and stear them away from caching. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt and just hope if they did drive there, then they would not do it again.
  16. Better watch out for these guys!! (Notice fuzzy catapiller on my sleeve) I'm just glad I don't have to deal with half the stuff you guys find! We find lots of deer, and plenty of bugs and squirrles. But only 1 snake and nothing else...knock on wood!
  17. I'm a female cacher that got my dh and kids into it! Also have a few other girlfriends who want to go on finds with me! Gonna let the dh's watch the kids and us moms go out and find some!
  18. I had planned on leaving mine on to help prevent little scratches until I got the carrying case. But DH got to it first and took it off, wouldn't stick back on.
  19. We've ran across lots of junky caches and it's dissapointing to the kids...and myself. We have found some good ones with little card games or nice cars or some other fun little items. But then you get the ones filled with broken and or dirty cars, dirty golf balls (clean ones are fine), little tiny animals (do you take one or the 4 that are in there?) and the obvious Mc Toys which half are broken. All the items I leave are atleast $1+ in value, and we end up taking that dirty car or one little animal. I am so tempted to make a cache of my own which will containe NICE items! If someone trades junk, I will take it out and replace it. I have wanted to do that with some caches I find, but it would end up costing me a fortune! I also think some people need to maintain their caches a bit better. We had one where they owner had just visited it a couple days before we found it and there were broken toys in it. Noone else had logged a visit in between his and ours either. I don't expect expensive or fancy items, but just clean and non broken perhaps to keep it fun for the kids.
  20. Glad someone asked this question, I was wondering the same thing. I have come across a few travel bugs and didn't take them because I would only get them a few miles away. But now maybe I will.
  21. I'm a Tupperware manager and I'm donating some Tupperware containers at our Eastern Iowa Hike n Seek event this coming weekend. But I'm trying to figure out which ones to donate as prizes for people to use for their own caches. Do people use just the bowls, or the modular mates, or what do people use. And I guess the sizes varies too. Or should I just offer a coupon good for a free piece?
  22. Just had to add a chuckle about religous material in caches. My 4 year was SO excited to find a little green bible in one cache we found the other day. He quickly grabbed it and started "reading" it on the log we were by. He has been carring around ever since. Just thought it was cute and had to share!
  23. You guys are awesome with responses! I've found so many things I'd like to get! Right now I'm stick with my Tupperware gadgets as trade, but will switch to something else someday. This will give my mind time to figure exactly what/how I want. Thanks!!
  24. I got mine at our grocery store (Hy Vee), but I know Target and Walmart give them away too. Or maybe drug stores. I'd ask at non camera specific places.
