  1. quote:Originally posted by Eric O'Connor:How would you feel if you returned to find that your cache had been disabled in this way so that you could verify it's condition and report the results back to the page? If one person had a concern over my cache because I hadn't been there to update it in a while, and I was given two weeks to respond before my cache was deactivated - I'd be pretty ticked. Especially since there are many caches out there that have gone unattended/unanswered for months. If many people had complained, and it had been a month or more and nobody was able to contact me - I would probably be ticked, but would understand that there was a growing tide of concern over the cache. Like you, I would welcome the opportunity to be accountable to what I'm doing with my cache. quote:Originally posted by Rubbertoe: Heh... sucks to be Jeremy at times like this I bet. 2. When the Meridians are motionless, they average readings to create an averaged location. The theory is that even with an accuracy error, you'll end up in the center of the bell curve when multiple readings are averaged together. A few minutes is probably enough time to get an averaged reading. Make sure you don't move the unit before you mark the waypoint otherwise you'll undo the averaging. Being able to get back within 15' is acceptable - I'd be happy to be able to do that when hunting a cache. I'm sure if you let the unit average for a while on your way back, you'd find yourself closer than that. The location page on the Meridians shows a location and an EPE while moving. When it's averaging, it will show "Averaging" or "WAAS Avg." with the amount time time elapsed since it started averaging readings. You can move to a different page, customize it, and show the actual EPE at the time if you're interested. Hope that helps. -Craig/TeamCNJC ... 3. What's the time frame for "time to respond?" The week before the 11th was the week of the 4th. Due to vacation, etc., two weeks in July may not be an adequate period of time to respond. Personally, I'll be out of touch for 2 1/2 weeks later in August. If the cacher with the concern wishes, he/she can go to this event and talk with the charity cache owner in person. From an administrative standpoint, I don't know if one concerned cacher is enough to deactivate a cache. Multiple complaints over months would be an entirely different story. However, if this cache violates any geocaching policy, you should, IMHO, feel free to disable it and ask the owner to change the cache back to the original intent and remove the charity option. Personally, I wouldn't be inclined to donate to a charity by leaving money in a bucket in the woods, but if I did leave a dollar or so, I wouldn't be upset (or surprised, for that matter) if it walked away. It's your call, Jeremy. That's why you get paid the big bucks. -Craig/TeamCNJC ... Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-- I took off through the thorns, chest high, ...

  5. Pennsylvania has recently come up with a policy that approves geocaching in PA State Parks, with permission. The thread describing the policy can be found here. I'm sure that they don't have any more resources than MN does. Any other states that have come up with a policy? Maybe our response can be "You don't have to study geocaching in State Parks - it's already been done in PA, etc." -Craig/TeamCNJC ... Oki, I load & calibrate an raster or vector map (Using OziExplorer), and? I heard, the file name should be MDETAIL000.img, it's right? Can everybody explain me step-by step this process? rgrds, Mix_ The standard map name is "DETAIL00.IMG," but with the latest firmware, you can select any .img file on the SD card to use as a detail map. However, the Magellan .img files are proprietary, and anything that you create probably won't work. If, however, you do get it to work, be sure to let us know. 10. You can also try Scott at GPSDiscount.com. He'll probably price match, and offers same-day shipping, lower shipping costs than some other online sources, and excellent customer service. -Craig/TeamCNJC ... Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-- I took off through the thorns, chest high, ...
  11. To a Magellan Meridian unit - I was going to keep my Venture as a backup but when my domestic manager saw the price ... I've had the unit for a year, it's in good shape - no scratches that I can remember off the top of my head - manual - cable - POI CD-ROM. I have no idea how to price it. Checked eBay (I HATE that place) and they're going from $60-160. Let me know here or email teamcnjc@earthlink.net. -Craig/TeamCNJC ... Short walk, Just to clarify, the cache in question was listed as being "adoptable" by geocaching.com similar to this cache here (<- not the cache in question in this thread) for a significant period of time, apparently due to non-response by the original owner. It seems there are other issues involved, if you check out this thread. However, I do agree with you that "adopting" caches should be a slow process, and more of a last resort. In most cases, it will solve the problem of an unmaintained cache due to players who've moved on to other things, but in this case, it caused the removal of a popular cache. -Craig/TeamCNJC ... 19. I think that you'll find may opinions as to what is and is not a "legitimate" cache. Personally, I like virtual caches as much as traditional caches, and I love multi-stage and puzzle caches. Microcaches are challenging due to their size, but I like to log my experience. Others may dislike the 1/1 caches that don't require a significant amount of work, but they're great with kids. My thought is that this sport is about using a GPSr to lead to unique, beautiful, or otherwise special places you would not normally go to. Perhaps in the future we'll get an option to "turn off" certain types of caches. Until then, I'll just pick and choose and ignore the rest. As long as the cache is appropriately identified as virtual, event, or mystery, it should be easy to weed according to your preferences. -Craig/TeamCNJC ... 21. I've had my MeriPlat for less than a week, and I'm noticing "issues" with the compass. For example, West is dead-on, East is off by about 5-10 degrees, north is off by 30, and south is off the other way by 10 degrees or so. I've tried calibrating about 5-6 thousand times - inside, outside, picnic table, ground. Anyone else had any compass issues like this? -Craig/TeamCNJC ...
