YES. All GPSr units receive UTC (Zulu time, GMT, among other names). You have to tell it the offset from UTC by setting the local time, and from that point on, the time displayed will be calculated as an offset from the received UTC time. While it would be pretty cool if the unit knew which time zone it was in, most time zone borders aren't straight from north to south. Most newer units (MeriPlat included) can automatically adjust for DST, both in the US and Europe, but that's a user configurable setting. -Craig/TeamCNJC ... It's magic! Actually, it's part of the continual almanac updating that the GPSr acquires as part of its routine. Ed, Following your lead, I formatted my 64MB Sandisk SD card in my MeriGold, and was successful in downgrading to 4.02, then upgrading to 4.06 using a personalized version of the firmware. Each update took less than 1 minute. I'm NOT using WinXP. I use Windows 2000 at work, and I don't have the slightest idea of where/how this SD card was originally formatted. -Craig/TeamCNJC ... I'm sure that I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but I think the Garmin units use a proprietary memory card. Magellans use a standard SD card, which you can purchased pretty much anywhere. If the card that you have is more than 2.4cm wide or 3.2cm long, you've probably got the wrong memory. -Craig/TeamCNJC ... It was 5 degrees overnight (that's Farenheit, and in my car, in my garage), and I started up my MeriGold this morning. The display was almost impossible to read, but I was able to bump up the contrast. Despite a nice geometry, the MeriGold was unable to get a lock on a single satellite for about 5 minutes, until the heat from the defrosters was able to warm up the unit a bit. It took about 8 minutes in a warming-up car to get a position fix, which was right on, according to my previous tracks on the same route. About 10 minutes from start-up, I had to put the contrast back to normal because the display was blacking out. It was 15 below outside overnight. Wind chills were about 40 below, which, incidentally, is the same Celsius or Farenheit. Too cold to cache today, at least in Minnesota. -Craig/TeamCNJC ... If you see the WAAS message on the position screen, it's working. For kicks, update your firmware and put the EPE field on the position screen. You can see an immediate dropoff in EPE once WAAS corrections are applied. To activate/deactivate WAAS, go to the "secret" menu screen, then select number 03. (menu, left, right, left, right, left, use the rocker to enter the number). Press ENTER to toggle the one-and-only configurable field, and hit ESC twice to return to normal. If this doesn't work in 3.08, update your firmware. Also, if you have an SD card reader/writer, and want to take advantage of switching between map images on the SD card, you'll need to update your firmware. -Craig/TeamCNJC ... IMHO and FWIW, before trying to bring in the opinion of the masses, try emailing the reviewer with your reply to his denial. When I placed my virtual cache, I was ready to respond with a more detailed explantation and pictures should my cache not be approved. However, I didn't have to. I didn't think of adding a "reviewer please read and delete" note as suggested by Erik earlier. Also, this cache has a unique verification system. Something similar with your cache may help some of the armchair-find questions that have been raised. -Craig/TeamCNJC ... LilDevil, Thank you for this excellent tool. I used it for the first time today to batch change icons, as well as provide the html data on my Palm using iSilo, with no problems. You can use GPSBabel to convert an SD card file to a MapSend file. Select "Magellan" as the source type, and select "MapSend" (and .trk as the file extension) as the destination type. Also, you can use a text editor to remove lines on the SD card between your old track and your house before you do the conversion to get rid of the line to your house. -Craig/TeamCNJC ... Jamie, Did you supply your email address in your RMA? I got an email when Thales received my old MeriGold and shipped the replacement unit - the emails were only a few hours apart, and on the day that my package was delivered (FedEx). The shipping email included a UPS tracking number. UPS took 5 days to get from Okalahoma to Minneapolis, back in November (before Thanksgiving). That was 9 days, inclusive of the shipping and receiving dates, with only 1 weekend and no holidays involved. If you haven't gotten an email by now, I would call... -Craig/TeamCNJC ... I couldn't get code 88 to work, even with a clean copy of 4.02 firmware. Maybe it's due to the fact that I'm going from 4.02 to 4.02. I'll give it a try once the next firmware update comes out. As pointed out in the Meridian Yahoo group, the new Meridian (MeriGreen/MeriGold/MeriPlat) firmware has two new codes on the hidden menu. Not being content with a successful firmware upgrade, I decided to check them out. As a reminder, the "hidden" menu is accessed by hitting "MENU" then rocker "Left" then "Right" then "Left" then "Right" then "Left." Use the rocker to enter the code, then "Enter." Code 88 will update the firmware from the file "firmware.hex" on the SD card. I copied "personal.hex" to the SD card, renamed it "firmware.hex," invoked code 88, and confirmed. The unit entered the "software update mode," and "erasing" appeared on the screen, followed shortly by "writing." However, after 30 seconds, the screen displayed an "X" next to "writing." After 10 minutes, I knew I was stuck. I had to 3-finger salute and recover the old fashioned way. I'm going to try this again using a "clean" firmware. Code 86 will update the basemap from the file "basemap.img" on the SD card. I copied the Euro basemap onto my SD card, renamed it to "basemap.img," entered code 86, confirmed the update, and about 1 minute later, had the Euro basemap installed and functional in my MeriGold. Copying the NA basemap to the SD card and using code 86 again successfully reverted to the NA basemap. I used a Lexar multi-card reader/writer to move and rename these files. Now all we need is a way to change filenames on the SD card without using any external hardware. I guess I can load the extra basemap on my 64Mb SD card, and keep an old 16Mb SD card with the NA basemap handy to revert back. If you upload via the serial cable, you'll overwrite the previous map. You can, however, purchase an SD/MMC card reader/writer, upload several maps to the card in a fraction of the time it takes to do a serial upload. I haven't looked in a while, but they're pretty cheap. BTW, you can have multiple map sets on an SD card, but not with serial uploading. -Craig/TeamCNJC ... The SportTrack Pro will handle the task of collecting and storing data for you. But putting the data together and publishing it on a map might be more difficult, especially if you're on the Canadian side of the BWCA/Quetico. MapSend Topo maps end at the border - even in the middle of a lake. Hopefully, some of our Canadian forum members will have a good idea of how to get map images and overlay your track. You may want to post a message in the Canada forum if you don't get a reply here. On the GPSr side, make sure you bring plenty of batteries - one set per day should be enough, unless you're going to be pushing for more than 5 or 6 hours of paddling/portaging per day. Keep the unit high in the canoe - if you keep it down low, you'll have problem with reception and multipath accuracy - I "found" myself in the middle of Lake Superior when I put my MeriGold down by my feet when the winds picked up. You'll also lose reception when you're wearing a big silver hat - carry the GPSr with the pack over a portage. Save your track daily - after a few days, you'll start to lose some of your track detail. Also (very important!) keep the DEET away from your GPSr, or you'll permanently fog up your display. And I don't think I need to tell you that your GPS should not be your only method for navigation.
