  1. "Nearest Geocaches", BOW NESS!!! This is the link I was waiting for, similar to the "nearby waymarks" on a cache page, I now have 2 ways "in" when checking out what's available in a certain neighbourhood. Very handy. tks dm
  2. Let's see, in french that would translate to "(the hour) minus 15"! "Quarter till" equals one pivot or 160 acres which is a quarter section (640 acres). yup. dutchmaster
  3. You had it in the first sentence, then lost it again. 8-) I'm just leading the horse to water, I don't care if he drinks. I've mentioned in logs that waymarks are now active, "just click on the link" and had inquiries as to where the link was at. Dammit I'm just hoping to get the word out to the misguided masses. I already know that professional geocachers will appreciate a good waymark with relevant information that enhances their journey to the final cache and I needn't worry about whether they log the waymark or not. Probably more often than not. I'm assuming "drive-uppers" couldn't be bothered, great, I'm not forcing anyone to log anything other than the traditional cache. A tad more information and elliminate the brass tags. dutchmaster
  4. I guess I'll have to break down and become a premium member......when one of my many other memberships elsewhere run out, so I can create my own catagories. Industrial history would be a cool catagory. dutchmaster
  5. Ok, now flip that over to the other side. There's many multi caches that require one to get information from a nearby plaque or a website associated with a certain location and that location in most cases can also be logged as a waymark. Therefore why not link to the waymark which already has coords and use that as a stage for a multi where the final is at a separate location, not at the location of the waymark? dutchmaster
  6. To repeat what I just mentioned in another thread, how about the number of waymarks used as the (logable) stages of a multi cache? dutchmaster
  7. As mentioned in another thread about the multiple posts/catagories for one waymark or in my case multiple coords for one waymark as in a ghost town site, eg, historical plaque/odd shaped building/ruins/disaster site, etc, etc. and the need to promote Waymarking more, my idea is too use the nearby Waymarking coords as logable stages of a MULTI. With a dislike for drive-ups and the popularity, around here, for traditional caches with multiple stages before the final, I'm thinking this might be worth the effort. Then again I worry that this approach would be bordering on the "cram it down their throat" school of thinking. Maybe I worry to much. I know I have no desire to maintain the little brass tags or other forms of information for multi stage caches, when there's a website where I can simply list them. It's up too the individual whether or not they want to absorb the asociated information once the cramming part is over. Just a thought, no maybe a warning as I will be acting upon it. If this sounds good, wish me luck. tks dutchmaster
  8. I'm going to have to keep this in mind as I've been wondering lately how to submit something as large as a ghost town with so many coords/waymarks and catagories. dutchmaster
  9. I was shocked when I first saw the catagory but then realized it "fit in" with the poor eating habits and obesity in North America and of course a heart attack victim every 30 minutes. In my world I would only allow submissions of the mom and pop establishments that compete next door to the giants and usually offer better food. Who needs a waymarks, unless they're in braille, when you can spot the golden arches at most interchanges and from blocks away? Then again the McD's waymarks would narrow down the restaurant strip and the possiblility of finding better food next door by someone with the ability to manipulate this catagory. My $0.02, tks BTW, are they were going to finish the second arch at McD's head quarters in St Louis? dutchmaster
  10. First off, THANKS, I really like the topic and the actual furnace sites that I've found in the years prior to Waymarking. I would like to contribute but finding an iron furnace in Eastern Ontario is like trying to find a good meal at Rotten Ronny's and I no longer travel long distances from home. OTOH, I think about iron furnaces every time I see a lime kiln and some of the larger lime kilns do have the required wow factor. (hint hint) tks dutchmaster
  11. Yup, Waymarking dot com, gets my vote and the link is right on each cache page. Granted it's less than 3 months old but you can post your own or log visits to existing ones.
  12. A cross country mtbike ride with caches along the way? BONUS! I do worry about hikers though when placing caches that far out in the boonies. Too difficult maybe? Less visits? Should I care? I'm stressing again!
  13. Spoilers can effect micros, which I hate doing, in that they would surely make the hiding spot more "visible" in a photo. I've hidden caches in places with a multitude of hiding spots and actually post a picture to make it a tad easier, on the environment and to find. I can't believe everyone really checks all the photos posted on a cache page unless their already having problems finding it. Worrying about spoilers seems pretty lame when all you need to do is follow the FOOTPRINTS in the snow or mud! I suppose paved city caching in parks might be a tad different. YMMV.
  14. Whatever happenned to honking your horn or flashing your lights to get the driver's attention. Having had other drivers "drop a dime on me" I can say that most people fail to engage their brain BEFORE dailing 911. Of course when I'm on my bicycle the cagers really like using their horns and shouting profanities. Go figure. dutchmaster
  15. Walking sticks must be popular in areas where there is no WOOD? My $0.02 worth from a different area. Quite often I've noticed/spotted a walking stick near the trailhead and until this thread I was assuming the practice was to leave your stick for the next hiker. I never bring them home. I usually pick up a good stick on my way back out from the cache, when the gpsr is stowed away and both hands are free. Depending on the time of year, a longer staff/pole is handier for vaulting over puddles, anti-soaker insurance. Sugar maple is nice but ironwood is bombproof and my favourite. dutchmaster
  16. Make sure that all trade items FLOAT! In my part of the world that type of cache would soon become a 5 gallon puddle (full of sinkers and floaters). A better plan would be to hide it laying flat on it's side. dutchmaster
  17. I dropped a fellow cacher off to look for one of my caches while I went on to do a maintenance check on another cache nearby. I was gone a tad longer than the estimated time I figured it would take fellow cacher to find my cache. I returned, had a break, loaded up my swag and finally began a search after reaching the cache and discovering my partner hadn't been there yet. How to find a second cacher who's lost? dutchmaster
  18. Like the old saying "it's going to be in the last place you look". Well of course it is, why would one keep looking after they found it? OTOH, if you want to really hide something, see to it that a second item will be found first, as in, why keep looking? I've also pondered your idea to get around the "one cache/half mile" rule and without the multiple waypoint deal which some find aggrevating and omit completely. My only solution, for the obsesive/complusive diehards, so far is too hide additional coords, either on the cache page, attached photos or in the cache itself so that further searches would be of a voluntary nature by seekers with greater interests other that just getting a "smilie' from yet another drive by cache. Another possiblility is that existing caches could evolve by introducing multi layers where these voluntary waypoints could/would be logged with a corresponding photo or secret number, which should be more than enough to generate a desire amongst previous or future finders too revisit a cache. Maybe I'm trying to hard to please everyone. Maybe this is a monday morning thing. I hope this helps in some abstract way. Hmmm, does this new type of cache need a name? Should TBs or FTF prizes be allowed in these extra hides or are they just bonus attractions? dutchmaster
  19. New cache listings only pop up AFTER you get back home. dutchmaster
  20. This forum/thread is a great confidence builder. I've been rethinking a certain cache placement after reading this cache log and thinking I may have made a mistake when placing this cache. Granted I will recheck the steam crossing to see if the beavers have altered the unique crossing and maybe up the terrain rating. The location also provides extra bushwacking for the "arrow followers", a added bonus. I just got a little self conscious with the "kids" mention in the log, maybe because of the physical difficulty. Although I don't "do" any really hard mental type caches, it's the logs about physical hardships that seem to bother me the most, until now. Thank you one and all. dutchmaster
  21. How does one see the number of hits per page? dutch
  22. Well the best I've seen so far is this cache container. The immediate area added to the surprise because of the thick brush/undergrowth and due to the fact that one is constantly watching one's footing, the gpsr and all the branches. I knew I was getting close when my son froze and turned pale at the sight of the "container". dutchmaster
  23. Yeah, travel bug prisons beg for a good break out. There are many other black holes that TBs can end up in without having TB hotels messing up travel plans. Up here in the Great White North, in the dead of winter, most caches get as many visitors as a Siberian goolag and any TBs become "wintering patners" until Mother nature decides to change the seasons to something a little more geocache friendly. Second only to my fear of keeping a TB longer than expected, is my fear of dropping one off in a cache that doesn't get a visit for a long period of time, for whatever reasons. Keep them bugs moving, it's their "raison d'etre". dutchmaster edit spelling
  24. There are/were a couple but THIS page is still up and logable. dutchmaster
