  1. Sign us up I've seen just the thing for you... here. MrsB That looks promising
  2. I get an error if I copy and paste, not if I type in directly though.
  3. All those lovely little spots you would otherwise not know about. Sometimes I even forget to look for the cache.
  4. I have occasionally come across hand made sig items but not for some time. Always appreciated them when I did. At one time I was putting Elongated Pennies in caches I found and put out. Not done so for some time and obviously not handmade by me. I personally like the idea
  5. Worth mentioning that if you do go for gators it is worth paying a bit more for breathable ones, otherwise you end up wetter inside than out.
  6. Have you tried British Army Hi leg combat boots or even rigger boots. If you shop around I am pretty sure you can get the combat boots cheaper.
  7. Well put, and I completely agree. Whilst I appreciate that the reviewers are simply trying to keep the reputation of caching respectable, it's all beginning to get very complicated. I'm tempted to place a cache in a memorial garden (without permission) that's a stone's throw from a railway station, and also inside a nature reserve which is also an SSSI! That's probably the largest number of UK-specific rules that can be broken by a single cache... Needs a can of Sardines
  8. Some further thought on getting users opinions before implementing location specific guidelines....... Open a thread to discuss the proposed guideline, then ask Groundspeak to include a link to it in the weekly newsletter. That has links to the nearest events and new caches so at a guess it would be flexible enough to put UK specific information in?
  9. I'll also continue the torrent by saying here, here. The reviewers are genuinely mad. Why else would someone volunteer to be a cache reviewer with the amount of armchair sniping that goes on? In general I support the reviewers, I am not sniping at what they have done, more that on this occasion I was displeased with the way it was done without consultation or even a more expansive explanation.
  10. At least there has now been some discussion. As I have made clear I agree with this guideline however it was imposed rather than consulted. I believe as a community we should have some input on local decisions. OK so only around 1% use the forums, anyone can use it if they choose to ignore the chance then fine at least they would have the opportunity. It's not just about this guideline, its about previous ones which have been imposed locally without any consultation. The GAGB is then just expected to change its guidelines to suit. However the GAGB provides guidelines that are available for the use of multiple listing sites not just Geocaching.com. It would be wrong in my opinion for the GAGB guidelines to be changed at the whim of the Groundspeak reviewers without any discussion. The UK reviewers refer people to the GAGB guidelines (and Landowner database) as part of the reviewing process. Do you really think we would be right to change a guideline just because a reviewer on one listing site says so?
  11. As per my previous post. They only want them listed on netmums not on geocaching.com. It is a short lived promotion just using the idea of geocaching. Before they rang the GAGB they had already received a phone call of a reviewer (Not UK), they told me his name (someone I know) so I have no reason to suspect they didn't.
  12. Apparently if your on the list you will get a starter pack with everything you need plus instructions. They have told me more but there is a limit to what they will allow me to say (some corporate confidentiality stuff).
  13. A few days ago the PR company contacted me via the GAGB for some advice on this promotion........ Neither I nor the GAGB have any links with this promotion with the exception that at short notice they contacted us for a bit of advice. OK, they have seen the this forum thread and have asked that I clarify a few points. The caches will only be listed on Netmums not on Geocaching.com. They will be asking the placers to follow the GAGB guidelines (with the exception obviously of the no commercial caches bit). There will be instructions to ensure they have landowner permission and to ensure that at the end of the promotion (1 month) that the boxes are removed. They do not want to upset the geocaching community or bring the pastime into disrepute. Ah well, with more time I guess they could have worked with Groundspeak and made Project ............. caches.
  14. The PR company have gone back to Disney to see what direction they want to take next.
  15. Predictably, here's our first contribution: Most Countries in 24 Hours Perhaps mongoose39 could remove his pages to avoid confusion Mark I will be removing my pages, not just yet though. It will be dying a natural death shortly. Any way just to clear things up. Talkytoaster did discuss taking over the records pages with me and I was very grateful to be rid of them. I just didn't have the time or the inclination any more.
  16. People know when Piratemania is, if anything you should move yours and I don't have a vested interest as I don't do Piratemania, not my kind of event.
  17. Postage, vat and customs unless your dishonest. Oh and the whole point of raising money for to fund the event. VAT and customs duties don't turn a £2 item into a £5 item. There's also nothing dishonest if the package is properly labelled and HMRC decide not to charge import duties - it's not unheard of that for lower value packages they don't charge anything at all even if the package does have a full and accurate valuation attached. Personally I'd rather see a request for donations than something being sold at what seems to be a silly markup. But then that's just me... if I want to support something I can make a donation and if I don't want to support it I won't pay a silly markup for something I can get elsewhere for half the price. If your buying just the odd coin or tag you won't get charged vat and customs, these are commercial quantities so will attract the charges. As for the mark up it is probably no where near what has been suggested. The cost of manufacture can be quite low per piece when you are ordering large numbers, if as is likely they are not ordering in large numbers the price per piece is a lot higher. Unless they have gone directly to the manufacturer there will more than likely be third party costs to pay as well. It all adds up so to sum up, it is in my opinion a unfair comparison. As for donations, I am sure if you prefer not to have a tag and just make a donation they will happily take your brass.
