  1. Surely by mentioning this company this is a commercial post and ought to be closed according to the latest edicts. IMHO it's only a commercial post if it's posted by a competitor, otherwise it's a public service posting. (A bit like Watchdog on the internet) So that means we can mention businesses as long as we're not competitors? That sounds very sensible.
  2. Yep, I just saw that ... it probably is against forum guidelines to say exactly what I think of the scumbag. But when the shop hands over a coin doesn't it become the property of the person it is given to? Who are we to tell another person what they should do with their own property as long as it is legal?

  4. Oh I know that, but there seems to be many contributions from American based officials, such as the recent post by Michael. I was just pondering that we seem to be under intense scrutiny these days.
  5. Can someone explain to me who is modding this forum? Is it the local moderator(s) or is it someone from afar who doesn't understand how people in the UK think? After all, while it is hosted on the Groundspeak servers it is supposed to be for Uk cachers. We obviously have different standards and surely these should be accommodated. It seems to me that "they" have it in for certain regular posters to this forum (not me for sure). Has it always been like this here? Having spent some time going through the history of postings it seems to have suddenly gone downhill over the last few months.
  6. Why? Is it wrong to share views with someone else? Possibly, maybe you too? Who's ego exactly are you talking about? Uktim, you are very vocal in your support for Groundspeak and all power to your elbow for that. It is good to hold to your views. I'm relatively new here so forgive my ignorance but are you a reviewer or moderator for them? If not, perhaps they might like to make you an offer soon.
  7. Just making one of my irregular visits here and I find another "bust up". As I read it this person got banned for a minor infringement of the forum guidelines. As this is the same person who seems to have upset/been upset by Groundspeak I wonder if they are trying to make an example of him. I sometimes ask myself what sort of organisation I have joined and whether hunting plastic boxes merits all this angst.
  8. I agree, I see Geocaching an the National Trust as being natural partners in developing ways to explore our beautiful countryside.
  9. Presumably the person who complained about Mandy's forum thread had their reasons. Perhaps they would like to explain to the rest of us why they felt compelled to report her to "the authorities" (I mustn't use the acronym above for fear of being told off, or worse )
  10. For those of us using FF and Adblock perhaps you could explain (I don't see any adverts)

    Ignoring a USER?

Is that right? I'm not allowed to keep my own offline database? Surely not. In any case, how would "they" know?
  12. I can't see how the "history" matters very much, after all the person logging the cache in the past either found or did not find the cache. That's not going to change at all. Surely it's more important that a cache is correctly classified so that future cachers get the right information.
  13. It's quite simple. I was warned that my language was disrespectful to the owners of the site and that such criticism was inappropriate. I therefore apologised for causing upset. I'm new here and I didn't realise that it was not the "done thing" to express my opinions in such a forthright manner. I'll say it again - I'm sorry for any upset caused. Maybe it was down to two cultures being separated by a single language (almost!)
  14. It would seem that I owe TPTB (can I say that?) an apology for my criticism in the opening post of this thread. Being new to these forums I didn't realise that my post would overstep the mark and upset people in the way that it did.
  15. So Groundspeak, what are the chances of this being implemented here?
  16. Deceangi, I just wanted to be clear about what you said earlier. Is it you intention that in time you will be requiring all existing caches to be updated to include the region? Or are you treating existing caches as "grandfathered" and exempting them from HAVING to be updated?
  17. Although I can't come, I hope the Mega Event is a great success despite all the apparent problems. In particular I've been reading the closed thread UK MEGA EVENT - YOU TUBE MOVIE COMPETITION and I'm somewhat surprised by the negative comments by some. I'm not personally into You Tube but I know it's popular and the idea of a fun competition for those who want to take part seems like a harmless bit of fun. I'm sorry that some people feel strongly that it's a bad idea but each to their own I suppose. I'm shocked that it would appear that our American masters have again seen fit to slap UK cachers for indulging ourselves in a bit of innocent fun (yes, I've read about the recent problems although I'm only new here). It's a pity we can't be allowed to play things our way but I suppose we have to do as we're told.
  18. Gosh! What an amazingly popular thread. From scanning it quickly it seems all (?) the contributions come from Americans. Are other nationalities represented or did I just miss them and am I the first non-Yank here? I served in the Scouts as a boy and in the local Air Cadets. I'm pleased to say I never had to do any serious fighting.
  19. In my very limited experience it doesn't matter what you leave, it will soon be replaced with the usual tat.
  20. I like the idea of a cache up a tree. Gives me an excuse to do something I haven't tried since I was a nipper!
  21. What guideline has your message broken? I can't see anything obviously wrong.
  22. I agree. Although I'm definitely a non-Christian I find old churchyards (and churches) fascinating places, full of history and a sense of "stability". They are places where everyone can sort of connect to the past. I've met many guardians of such places and have invariably been welcomed to look around. Certainly be open and not furtive, you have as much right to be there as any member of the public.
  23. Thanks for the welcome MrsB, I'll have to have a read of that. Maybe I should also learn to search first I hope I'll be welcome here, being new it's always daunting to join in with the "old timers"
  24. I'm in the UK and all of the caches I've looked at so far (not many I know as I'm new) have been in English only. I would guess that the vast majority of caches in the USA are also written only in English too. I see nothing wrong in cache descriptions being written in the language of the country that they are placed in. I hope I'm not so arrogant as to expect people pander to my lack of language skills while visiting their countries. When abroad I am a visitor in their country and I should expect to conform to their way of life, including learning at least some of their language. If that means struggling with "native language" caches then so be it. All the more incentive to familiarise myself with their language.
