  1. I was sent this today by a German friend - he saw an insert on German TV.

    Article on dead drops

    Dead Drop sites so far

Yes - saw that a while ago

Here is a link to the first in Africa in Natures Valley - not sure I would like to stick one of those in my laptop with windows = virus heaven - oh wait I use Linux so I'll be ok then!

    http://deaddrops.com...age=view&id=145

Not sure if there are any others in SA yet - I just remembered reading about that one and was able to google for it.

edited to add : Seems like the only one in SA according to the World Map view on the site!

  2. Am I stepping on sensitive toes??? I would like to know about the story behind the story. What about the event where a serious attempt was made to ban a certain cacher with force? Or should sleeping dogs be left alone? Gerhard

sleeping dogs should be kicked wide awake!

lets have the full story - right here in the forums or links to the story as previously told

  3. One of the reasons I like GCVote is that it is a 1 to 5 star rating system. If it has been voted as a one star cache by a couple of cachers then I will put it on the ignore list. The system carries that punitive element. If I look at the GCVotes oveall, it seems to give a better "feel" for the quality of caches than the Favorites system.

I quite like the Firefox script that expresses Favorites as a percentage of total finds, also gives the less found caches to shine against those that a found often.

The main problem is you have to find out about GCVote and then install scripts which while dead simple is more than (probably) most people are comfortable doing. If you are using a PC other than one of you own you probably will not have the scripts installed

The GC favorite system has been propagated to all users and is available no matter where you log in from.

The unfavourite option is quite interesting - perhaps you should be able to covert some of your favorite points to unfavourite points.

I am still guessing the vast majority of users are looking at the faveroute thing and just going WTF! and not bothering with it.

  4. Doc you are slightly missing the point.

Its not about plastic crap as you say but how about a decent size log book that you can log a decent note in. More than micros I hate the logging of micros and then especially forgetting to bring a pen. What's wroing with a nice small cache containing just a log book and pen/pencil. Still think a micro is a bit sad on top of a mountain or at the end of a long micro.

I am of course referring to film cannister size and down - or any small round container (pill bottle) that has to have an otherwise reasonable sized log book all wound up to fit in!

Agree about the clues and findability. Leave a detailed spolier clue if the cacher has had to make a huge effort to get to the cache.

Then again this is all moot as those remote ache s are the least likely ones I am to do!

As for TBs - at least they will be relatively safe in those remote caches!

  5. The new layout does nothing for me - seems like change for changes sake - its not better in any event.

In Facebook you friend someone you don't friendise them so what s wrong with saying that you favourite a cache after which the cache has been favourited by you!

  6. I just had a listing published by ROTSIP: http://coord.info/GC2G4AK but I didn't get a notification email. Usually, even when it is my cache, I get one. I'm wondering if the new changes made these emails smarter, and I don't get one for my own caches, or if one just didn't go out. Did anyone get an email for this new cache? It was published 12:27 am according to my gmail. Thanks!

So you did get an email then?

I still have not received a notification email of this new listing of yours - and I do seem to get all the new caches close by. So perhaps there is some delay in the mail somehwere.

With a little searching, the can was found to be good today.....

I'm not sure if this was meant to be, but it certainly sounded unnecessarily sarcastic huh.gif

This guy has done quite a few of my caches recently and I for one appreciate the effort, albeit in broken English, that he has at least made an effort to include an English version of his log.

By the looks of it, its a direct translation from the German text using Google Translate, and its a lot better than Babel comes up with, in terms of making sense smile.gif

Entspannen Sie sich, MnCo - kein Sarkasmus an alle gedacht. Ich liebe die Art der Übersetzungen heraus

Seine alle gerade für Spaß, Babelfish für den Gewinn!

I did not find a huge difference between babelfish and google - google has a nifty language recognition feature! and possibly more languages. Babelfish has been arround forever. Used to be altavista Babefish which proceeded even yahoo by years.

Ayez un jour splendide et voyez-vous au prochain événement.

I guess I should add that for me the can was found to be bad! I must search a little strongly, in order to find the buffer memory!

  8. This can happen if the owner has deleted your logs. Try to contact the owner for more information.

Not likely for so many I think?!

How are you determining the find status? I presume you have delved into each cache and shown all the log listings and yours are absent?

How many are we taking about and over what area - is it possible you did a day of caching and forgot to log all the caches found that day?

A suggestion (that I would do very well to follow myself) is to keep a small pocket notebook with you at all times when caching so you can record the found caches and make notes and solve puzzles and work out coords etc. Then you ave a nice record of your caching - also if someone calls you up for advice on a cache you can consult your book!

A great little pocket book is the tiny moleskine and I paid R25 for a pack of two at Exclusive Books in Cavendish.

I hope you resolve your missing caches!

  9. Anyone keen to team up for an epic advebture doing some of this series tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday. I am sure there are all sorts of plans going on - I have left it a bit late to call people now.

So if you are going I am keen to join - if your car is full I'll follow on my bike.

I have only a bakkie so if anyone is keen to joing me I have space for one - unless you will sit in the back!!!

I will be up early tomorrow checking the logs to see where the closest FTF opportunities lie

My phone number is 072 438 6800 - you can call up to midnight!

    Cheers

  10. With a little searching, the can was found to be good today. Well, that today no rugby is played.

Bless you babelfish or what ever translator you are to use for such wonders as the above.

  11. You might have to give the answer in a whisper. I do think that this is going to be a tough one to crack.

Since I had to google I cannot answer although I have.

I certainly do not equate the Magi with this stuff - I had never heard of it.

    Nice question.

  12. in a nut shell i think garmin are just using open cCHING to boost their sales of handheld gpsr. I mean for goodness sake their mascot is called opie, everything they have said in their statment kind of seems to be a copy cat from garmin

Obviously they intenet to sell more units!!!! The interface is quie slick and not moderation!!!!! I have just added Cape Towns first 4 caches and see there are a number arround the country.

Adding your caches is simple and if you use GSAK you can just export a gpx file of your hides and import them. This puts them in to a draft state and you simple edit each one and activate. Instantly available.

OC recommends a proximity limit of .1 mile = 160m but does not enforce this - this could be a problem

It has a nice tagging system which does not limit you to a set of predefine tags - just make up your own for the cache - I guess a uniform set will arise out of common usage.

    Pros

    Great interface

Nice rating system - nice visual system

    Tags are cool

    Instant publication - no moderation

Nice map system to pic caches

    Import your existing GC hides

    Import your existing GC finds

    Cons

    No moderation - instant publication

    Less users

Finder may only log on OC and not GC skewing your caches found stats

Thats just off the top of my head

I like it and it could be a nice extra tool - perhaps for that cache that is too close to a GC that GC will not publish - that cache you just have to place because the one there is lame!

We all say it is about the caching - well this is about the caching - we cache cause we love it - now there night be opportunity for more caching

When creating a cache you have the option to say it exists on another website and you could enter the GC code there - not sure ho wit handled imported caches - assume it flagged them as existing on an alternative website and took the GC code - which does not see to show up on the listings.

The result of my importing some finds was a bit wonky! Understandable;y it ignored caches that were not listed on OC and the one cache I hd found that I listed was correctly credited to me but the date found was wrong and so was the note . I just did a simple export from gsak - so you should obviously use only your own finds database populated just by the my finds PQ which only included your note (I think)

Just some notes as I was playing with the site that some of you may find useful

  13. Thanks for the advice!

My question wasn't actually about buying vs stealing maps. What I meant was whether I can manage *without* the extra maps (i.e. is the device usable on its own - it seems a bit silly to me that they would be sold in a state that isn't usable) as I don't have a very big budget at the moment. I gather that it does come with a basic map, so I won't need anything extra to start off with?

Well I never meant to encourage anyone to steal anything - I was being facetious and ripping of those stupid ads your are forced to watch after you just paid R200 - R300 per DVD/Bluray disc.

All I meant was its just as easy to share this kind of thing and if you have shared music or videos then there is really no difference.

Ok I'll shut up about this now.

So you have never copied a cd or illegally downloaded a mp3 and you certainly don;t want to use a mapset you ave not paid for then gr8scots option is perfect.

I just put the California OSM maps on a friends GPS for his recent trip and he said it was awesome. Street addresses did not work but a quick use of google to get a coord and the thing routed him with no problem.

    So OSM FTW!

Have fun and remember contibute if you can - you will be able to take nice long tracks with your new Legend! An just by using and sharing with others you ARE contributing. No if only Garmin and those musos saw the value in this model......oops I have not shut up..........

  14. Paying for a reviewer to travel to Cape Town would not sit well with me. Reviewers should alwasy remain impartial and objective - this would be crossing the line I feel.

Should the reviewer get to Cape Town on his own I would have no problem with that.

  15. That seems a reasonable price - as to the company I have no idea. If stuff like guarantees are important to you find out if the product is official ex GDA or a parallel / grey import. A lot of these cheap online shops use grey products - they are genuine products but won't be supported by the manufacturer.

As for maps yes you will have to purchase and the price is actually R999 so take that into consideration.

You wouldn't steal a movie/music would you? Oh you would! Well then no problem with maps either.........

Good luck and enjoy your new unit.

  16. Who is Mr Fred Brownell?

Have we not had this question before - on googling the answer it just seemed so familiar. Tried a forum search but the search facility is really sucky - it returns the thread but not the occurrences of the word within the thread - 78 pages make it a useless result.

Perhaps someone else will remember if we have had this question

    Trev

added: Ok while I still think the seach is fairly sucky there was an option to display messages instead of just topics

The reverse of this question was asked before. On September 30 this year!!!!!

I seem to recall it was designed by South Africa's official Herald, but I don't remember his name. I think he was called in after a national competition to design a new flag produced no acceptable results.

    Bingo - you're it

Yes Frederick Brownell - Herald for SA.

    So please ask another!

  17. Hi all,

South Africa has successfully hosted the FIFA Soccer World Cup.....Are we ready to host a Geocaching MEGA event in South Africa?

Can this be pulled off in 2011 (second half) to still form part of the 10 years Geocaching in SA?

I love a good event... the Mega the Better I always say :)

I guess the question would be the logistics of where to host it... I vote Cape Town

I think the only problem is the number of attendees - does it not have to number 500 (is that cachers or caching ids?) for it to be a Mega Event I don't think we have enough cachers in SA. Other than that I would be interested. Cape Town FTW

  18. yay!

What country was the first in world to develop a system of measuring and quantifying the Gross National Happiness of its peoples?

    I'd say Germany or Japan

The Germans because they are so glum

The Japanese because it sounds like something they would do

  19. Thanks Malo Mystery..

Recently Jeff Dunham did 3 shows in South Africa..

He is probably the best known ventriloquist in the World..

    He has 7 co-stars...

If you can name 3 of them you can ask the next question...
