  1. Ok, let me take one more guess - Could it be Ghana's neighbours: Côte d'Ivoire

Funnily enough - I am sitting in Abidjan right now. But alas no - it was not Cd'I. Think about who was likely to have been a soccer playing nation in 1930's (especially considering the colonial past of Africa).

    South Africa?

  2. Ok Polar Bears

The Event cache has been published and you can find it here

Be one of the Chosen Frozen

If you want a shirt to commemorate freezing your self near to death this is what it looks like and their is a limited edition tshirt (50 being printed - orders for a second run taken on the day).

Log your attendance and let me know if you want a tshirt - R50 a piece. Send your order to me ASAP - shirts available at the end of the week - red shirt with this print on the chest.

  3. On Saturday the 25 May there is an Open Street dat in Lower Main road Obs

The concept is to close the street to vehicular traffic for 4 hours from 13h00 till 17h00 and let the citizens play in the streets. Ride your bicycle , skateboard or roller blade.

Obs Lower Main Road has a lot to offer and their will be all sorts of activities planned for throughout the day. The area is well supplied with kiddies parks so there will be activities for kids too.

There are plenty of good little bars and eateries - or just bring your chair and a newspaper and watch life go by.

I was asked by someone from the community helping organise the event to do something about geocaching. So I submitted an event which is published here so do log your attend and come along and enjoy a car free day

But thats for existing geocachers really - I thought I would lay a temporary geocaching trail - say ten pieces all along Lower Main Road - according to my measuring using Google Earth its a stretch of 1.5 km or so.

I also thought about manning a table with some info and perhaps getting geocachers to buddy up with non-geocachers who don;t have GPS;s or who are a little unsure how to use their GPS.

SO I want to get a banner of sorts or a poster and advertise a start time for the gps hunt. I thought of a combination of a few containers to find and then some info to collect along thew way at various waypoints. Perhaps some way points to be given and some to be collected on the way

So I am looking for any volunteers to help out with this in any way - suggestions of how to run the GPS Hunt side of things and obviously help on the day or help hiding the trail

I'll be scouting this week and getting in touch with the organisers to let them know of my plans

    So get in touch

So at the Geocaching event you will be able to lounge arround or ride your bike or have a bite to eat or just hangout and then search for a power trail or urban micros or wahtever we get planned.

    Fun times

  4. Hi all Western Cape Geocachers and those of you from the North who should happend to be in Cape Town on Saturday 22 June 2013

Its time once again to get your Polar Bear on!!!!!

In 2011 we had 21 attendees

In 2012 we had 21 attendees

In 2013 lets have even more!!!!!!!!!

Event will be published when I have confirmation of the date from the PolarBearPrez but Solstice is 21 June which is a Friday and we always have it the nearest Saturday!

There is always a souvenir made with the Polar Bear Logo and I thought it might be nice to have

Ursus maritimus cedit mare III - 2013 Geocaching Event

Added to the item - I am sure PoalrBearPrez can do this for us - there will be a small additional cost - but it will be a more memorable souvenir. To this end we woudl need to get those orders in early.

I will advise what the souvenir will be as soon as I know. Then you can order through me so I can give them one order for all the items to be co branded.

You don;t have to swim to attend the event!!!! But swimming in the middle of winter is what it is all about.

    See

Ursus maritimus cedit mare - 2011

    and

Ursus maritimus cedit mare II - 2012

This will give yo an idea of what to expect.

See you on an ice flow!

Sunday 27 January Wynberg Park 8:30 am onwards

Come gather round friends and see and/or participate in placing and almost 5 star cache in a tree in Wynberg Park

Attempt one was made last night. The Eaves potato cannon aimed by De Swart Kat shot true and straight - the projectile was not heavy enough to over come the friction of leaves and limbs so will be redesigned better and heavier than before.

Attempt 1 has shown that it is feasible. Attempt 2 will hopefully be successful.

I have included a link to the FB event (you do not need to be an FB member or logged on to see it)

An early start at 8:30am will leave mean fading light will not hamper us - we were politely asked to leave the park as the security was locking the vehicle boom!

Bring a blanket and a picnic and enjoy an hour or two - if the ropes are set you will have the opportunity to ascend 20+ metres up a free hanging rope to "find' the cache and lay claim to being a co-hider. As etiquette would then dictate you would have to wait for the cache to be published and found and for the the first finder to log before logging your own (significant) achievement.

If nothing else enjoy a morning of sunshine in a beautiful park with your fellow cachers.

    See you there.

Perhaps 9 provinces in 9 hours?

But that would be to much of a race...

Perhaps 9 Provinces in a day.

The idea is to have an event at the start and finish.

That will be epic - do you have a idea for a route. Lets assume we won't "cheat" and have special caches placed to make the feat more convenient.

But with bikes that will mean a lot of riding and staying awake - in cars you can swap drivers - well technically if each bike had a pillion you could swap bikers!

  7. Tom - it sounds to me rather like Greasemonkey is disabled - therefore it stopped working and therefore when you try to install a script Greasemonkey does not pick up that you are trying to open a script (.user.js)

Please check to see if Greasemonkey is in fact enabled - On my Firefox (17.0.1) the greasemonkey icon is in the top right - same row as the address bar and google search input thingy. - checked that it is Enabled.

I am willing to wager this is the problem and as soon as you enable it your script which is already installed will automatically work.

Thanks for the tip for the script - I like that My Stuff menu option it adds.

If I am right you owe me a beer!

Let me know if yo manage to sort it out! I like Heineken and any craft beer!

  8. Dear fellow cachers and bikers

I am wanting to put together a event cache consisting of a bike (motorcycle) ride. But I want to guage how many people would be interested in the ride part - any street legal two wheeler welcome. I want to see if there is any interest.

The ride would end at a cool place for a nice lunch - picnic or restaurant and all would be welcome to get their in their cages and meet at this point

But I want to know what kind of bike you have so I can plan a route accordingly - ie big bike or small bike/scooter

Also if you can take a pillion and would offer the spot to a cacher please mention this.

Will be a Sunday morning in Jan or Feb.

  9. Groundspeak have spoke.

No new Challenges and in 7 days they will be obliterated for ever if I read their email correctly. Possible a bit heavy handed - does that mean that the number of challenges shown next to your number of caches will disappear too.

It was always a super lame idea and implemented in a super lame way and I am not sorry to see them go,

So in light of all this I issue the following (unofficial of course) challenge

I issue a challenge (not an official on mind you as that is disable)

Complete 7 challenges (or more) in the 7 days they will be available.

    Who will accept this challenge?

  10. I still post the odd letter or thank you card...

I sent and received a postcard the other day. There is no mistaking that personal touch and extra effort. I even bought some extra stamps to keep in my wallet so I could do it more on the Spur of the moment and drop it off in the Post Box thats just 100m from my house - It was probably 5 years ago or more that I have used that Box.

I really liked the idea that someone mentioned earlier in the thread of PostCrossing or whatever that postcard things was. I was just a bit hesitant to sign up with my home address but ultimately ones home address is hardly that private so I will probably sign up.

A international postcard costs R5.40 if I remember correctly - I can't check because they are forever stamps! So buy a whole book and beat inflation. Perhaps an innovative cacher could build a PostBox into his cache - the PO Box would be stage 1 and the cache hunter would have to record some information from the PB in question and write it down onto the back of a post card and send it to the CO for clues to the next stage.

So if nothing this thread might encourage a few people to put pen to paper and send a letter or post card across the world bringing back memories of an age where using the PB was the only way of communicating.

  11. Cape Town Cachers

Watch out for my planned series of Magnetic Post Box Caches that will take you on a tour of all the most scenic Post Boxes In Cape Town.

It will be called What Would Postman Pat and his Black An White Cat Think ### (where ### will be the number in the series)

A postal power trail if you will. This should be enough to make sure CapeDoc will have no other option other than going postal on me.

Following the Postman Pat series, in even earlier planning stages, is the Aqualung ### series. In this series, where I pay homage to British rockers Jethro Tull, you will be taken on a tour of the best Park Benches Cape Town has to offer. Expect locations from the beautiful to the mundane. Caches will receive and extra grading - HPC (from 1 to 5). This stands for the Human Poo Coefficient and will warn you of the likelihood of being exposed to this hazardous substance (courtesy of Aqualung and his ilk). This series will be of interest to those of you who have completed your Fizzy Challenge as now there is a whole new matrix to work towards. This series might prove useful if the current rate of economic decline and Eskom increases is maintained. After completing the series you will have a great advantage over your less fortunate non-geocaching colleagues as you will know where all the best park benches are on which you can sleep.

    Keep on caching

  12.

Paddawan and I are currently looking for accommodation - arriving Thur evening and leaving Mon morning.

We will have a hire car as we plan to D®ive the Bus plus some other stuff, if you are prepared to put up with us put us up that would be great.

What is Drive the Bus? Sounds interesting.

I am still considering getting to PTA not sure how or where I will stay but can figure that out.

  13. Mega Event is near

Who is going? Have you booked and paid for you air tickets? Tips on how to get the best deal? Who is driving up and has space for a passenger to share fuel costs? Train is discounted by 30 % meaning a return of about 800 and transporting a car is 5600 return so renting would be far cheaper?

    Accomodation?

I do have accommodation in JHB with my brother so maybe I will just fly up and travel with him.

What are others planning to do?

I am obviously trying to be as cost effective as possible.

    Cheers

  14. Writing an essay (opstel)?

Close enough. He won the medal in the general literature category, for a poem called "Ode to Sport".

My Goodness - and I along with the rest of the world (apart from the competitors and their mothers) thought that Dressage was the most boring Olympic "sport"

Dressage would be scintillating next looking at a bunch of horrid old poetry!

I think the Vogon's might have been in with a chance for a few gold medals (though I woudl slip in another HHGTTG reference after someone already mentioned 42!)

PS my spell check and my typing are both still broken would that I coudl spell it right!) -aaaaargh I give up!!!!!

  15.

No names mentioned, but to quote:

    "I have two observations:

    1. Why Trevor in his post keeps spellign would sa "woudl". The interesting part is that he does it more than once. Is it a keyboard wiring error. Can it be a brain synapsis aberration. Can it just be late at night? "

    A perfect example of:

    Muphry's law

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Not to be confused with Murphy's law.

Muphry's law is an adage that states that "if you write anything criticizing editing or proofreading, there will be a fault of some kind in what you have written". The name is a deliberate misspelling of Murphy's law.

Nice one Malo - I too have been guilty of making a correction only to have a mistake in my post!

But since there was some interest as to why I so frequently spell would as woudl the reason is not clear. I have picked up this problem with words such as could woudl shoudl (ok I see should spelled wrong - but left it as I really was trying to be careful - I think it is just the typing but I have being doing it for a while.).

But my spell check woudl normally underline in red the misspelled words nut since it is so often misspelled and I normally choose the correct spelling from the list, one day I added the misspelled word to my dictionary so now when I misspell it I do not notice!!!!!

It has annoyed me as there is no way in Firefox to edit the dictionary do I never bothered - till now.

So thanks Pooks - I opened my dictionary and removed the only two entries - both of which were misspellings.

So for others with similar frustrations here is how to do it

    http://cavemonkey50.com/2007/03/edit-firefoxs-spelling-dictionary/

You can safely ignore the instruction to shutdown Firfox - I edited that file with Firefox running no problem.

woudla coudla shoudla - and finally I DID!

  16. The Josephson Institute of Ethics in their 'Six Pillars of Character' says the following:

Honesty in conduct is playing by the rules, without stealing, cheating, fraud, subterfuge and other trickery. Cheating is a particularly foul form of dishonesty because one not only seeks to deceive but to take advantage of those who are not cheating. It's a two-fer: a violation of both trust and fairness.

    Nice sentiments.

But in the end analysis we should not be too hard to judge. It is only a game after all and someone "falsely" logging a cache does nor one any harm. If there is anyone on this group that has never copied a music album or movie or even watched someone else copy let them raise their hand. See where I am going here?

I woudl never log a cache that I never found or that was missing when I got to GZ, Actually I have once - I was in the presence of the CO and he saw I had the right place and he confirmed the cache to be missing and that he woudl replace it the next day or two. He said go ahead and log it so I did. An unusual circumstance to be sure and I feel justified as did the CO that that was all good. Maybe the purist will have a problem with that but I do not.

Mainly don't let it bother you as that solves nothing. Delete errant logs if you are sure they are false if you feel like it.

I have also logged a few puzzle caches with out solving the puzzle first. I am happy enough to do it as I still physically get to the GZ and sign the log. Some people woudl be a little uncomfortable with this perhaps. So they woudl alwasy solve the puzzle first. Some of the puzzles are so hard that it is no fun any more (to try and solve the puzzle!) Magnum PI anyone?

  17. That reminds me - a month or two ago my (the computer's) mouse went wonky, so I went to the shop to buy a mouse. at the shop i thought I would buy myself a wide screen for my bday. but then the XP could not cope with thge wide screen, so I bought a new computer. but then the scanner could not cope with the new computer, so I bought a laser printer/scanner/copier. I love my new computer with the wide screen and the smart printer, but just a word of warning: you might end up with and emptier pocket, but lots more fun. It might be something to do with the cumulative effect...

or you could just try linux - you'd be surprised what it can do it an old machine
