  1. Just to chime in with something that tickled my fancy as a LED headlight. It's also the modern day equivalent to the propeller beanie! The stealth aspect of it would seem to fit nicely with 'caching and the gear we carry! The bill of the cap hides a solar panel for charging during the day with the LEDs hidden at the front. More of a backup rather than primary light I suspect.
  2. The image from the article on Yahoo is still there: linky
  3. There's quite an extensive list of non-Garmin maps available for Garmin units. New Zealand is very well serviced, from the Open Source (free!) auto-routing street maps here to Topo maps from individuals and companies ranging from $NZ150 - $350 approx. More details if you search through the NZ forums in the software section. For other international maps, check the catalogue at http://mapcenter2.cgpsmapper.com/ Cheers, G.
  4. I've got a first cut of artwork ready (for 25): but would it be better with the colour white or just recessed, while black is raised? If so I'd change the top left and bottow right part-squares to orange.
  5. Odd. I just ran the 'Check for software updates' from Mapsource (6.11.05) and it said 6.11.06 was available: size of 1kb!
  6. Here's another site for GPX logs: http://magnalox.net/index.php
  7. Yep! GCB2 "Botanical Gardens" on Oct 10 2003 and it's still in fine health. An oldie, but a goodie!
  8. G7toCE is a PocketPC version of a program that allows you to transfer your data (tracks, waypoints,...) directly between the GPS and the PocketPC - but it only works with the serial port versions of the units, ie the old etrex series, 60CS (not csx) etc and not over a USB connection.
  9. The browser displays the information sent from a Web server. I'd take downloading to be the saving of data or a program directly to the storage area of the computer you're using. The intent and wording seem clear enough to me.
  10. I've always used Track up but it wasn't until I read the reference to orienteering above that I twigged why - decades ago (gulp!) that was the Orienteering way as I was shown. Old habits and all that!
  11. I had a 60CS tucked away in a front pocket of my ski jacket for a day last year, no problems with reception: For those who play in Google Earth: a kml file of the same tracks.
  12. A standard ammo box will need about 5kg of ballast to keep it down: I picked up some old lead pipes from the scrap merchant and flattened them with a hammer to line the bottom of the can. Just a shame the cache was muggled: waterproof metal box and 5kg of lead proved too tempting to the local fishermen.
  13. I'd love to get some (multi?) stencils to get a digital camo pattern on the cache (look up marpat). This shot always gets me:
  14. Yeah, but that's a Travelling cache - no more allowed thank goodness.
  15. Likewise, I had serious problems with the compass on my 60CS on a hunt the other day. It took 5 minutes to figure out that the cause was probably the strong magnets I'd picked up from the cache I'd just done and dropped into the shoulder bag. At the next stop we left the magnets in the car and all was good!
  16. I did have this large ammo can chained (neg. bouyancy) to a floating wharf in town but I suspect the shiny chain gave it away to locals who used the wharf for fishing.
  17. Why do I suddenly imagine a night cache waaaay out in the back woods?
  18. Oh, one tiny gotcha with that method. When you do check the [] Active box, remember to change the 'Date Placed' to today or the previous day. Otherwise it may not appear on the NEW list if it's been a week or two since you first created the page.
  19. Free Tip o' the Day: There's a little check box on the submission page " [] Yes, this cache is currently active (Reviewers will not see this listing unless box is checked)". If you leave it blank, you've got all the time in the world to submit the page, place your cache, double check it, test for water- and muggle-proofness, etc. Then, when all is right and ready for the FTF stampede, edit the page and check the box, then wait for the Reviewer to whack the Publish button.
  20. Having been inspired by many of the images in this thread I finally got this one placed: ..and FTF +3 already so I'll post this now. [Edit] Dang fingers can't spell!
  21. No, I'm sure it's just sound business practice: take control of the assets that are key to the current working model....Signal is taking over NAVSTAR!
  22. Request granted. It's called Google Earth with the geocaching.com kml download. In many countries outside the States, GE can be 10-20 metres off the mark so the slight fudge factor from the gc.com link doesn't matter too much.
