  1. msrubble, Thanks so much for adding yet another style to the list! They really had quite a variety over a relatively short span of time. Thanks
  2. Hi EdrickV, I believe they are asking about the marks height relative to the surrounding surface or ground. I think FPR stands for Flush, Projecting, or Recessed.
  3. That would be interesting, since HW specs for the Nook are limited (compared to a phone). FTXR If you ever decide to attempt to make this work on a Nook Mrs. TillaMurphs would love to be a tester. That bigger screen is sure easier on the eyes than a phone. Thanks
  4. Who are you and what have you done with AZcachemeister?
  5. AZcachemeister, On the remote chance that it helps: I once had a problem with DSWorld and got a "Permission Denied" error. I had to check the permissions on my C:\Program Files (x86)\DSWorld\ directory in Windows7) [C:\Program Files\DSWorld\ directory (in Windows XP)] and uncheck the ‘read only’ box and set the directory and files therein to ‘change’ or ‘full control’ for all users.
  6. This one was in a wonderful historic building. The company is still in business and is run by descendants of the original founders. Family owned since 1882. CM0356
  7. I have 2 words for you chiknlips - Bear Spray (Either that or make sure you can run faster than your wife). Well – it did not put an end to our search, but it was close. See, the mark was in front of the door, however, just on the other side of the door was a scrumpdillyicious Peanut Buster Parfait – what to do – what to do? SY0544
  8. kayakbird is the MORC master! He can clarify those marks. I did some digging around a found a few pieces of MRC info but nothing significant. Here is an 1881 MRC cap: HB1737 Here is an 1891 MRC cap that looks different than the one we found: MG0664 And here is yet another style found by CallawayMT and mentioned in a recent thread: NJ0888 I guess I might as well add RN0090 in here so all the cap styles are in one post: [editied to add the fourth photo]
  9. Hi Edrick, Thanks for the information! Note that MRC and MORC are two different agencies (that originally confused me also). MRC is the Mississippi River Commission and MORC is the Missouri River Commission. Thanks for the photo! That fills in the circumferential text at the bottom. I assume that the missing text on the top side is probably MINNESOTA RIVER but it would be nice to find a photo of a full cap. Thanks Edrick
  10. We found our first one of these critters a few weeks ago. RN0090 Anyone know of a database for Mississippi River Commission (MRC) marks? Anyone know what the missing circumferential text on this disk would be? Thanks.
  11. Heh! I actually had cause to do a level run off of one today. Great to know that they are still getting some love from someone other than us obsessive hobbyists!
  12. I wanted to thank you again for updating this Mike. I don't know what we would do without you.
  13. OK. I am going to partially answer my own question. A friend let me borrow his nuvi 285W tonight. I can confirm that the 285W WILL display POI icons at the 300 foot zoom level. The 285W isn't a current model but at least it is newer than the 760.
  14. Maingray, Thank you so much for checking! It was not the answer I was hoping for, but I really appreciate you taking the time to check. It looks like the 760 was the last unit to display them at 300 ft. Stupid Garmin
  15. Maybe you are running into the problem that I am hearing about with the newer nuvis. Here is a thread with some discussion: Any nuvis show POIs at 300 ft zoom?
  16. I have a chance to buy a used 765T to replace my 760 that just died. I am trying to find out if the 765T will display POI symbols at the 300 foot zoom level? (I know many of the newer nuvis will only display POI symbols at 150 foot or smaller zoom levels and I am trying to avoid those models). If anyone knows if the 765T displays the POI symbols at a 300 foot zoom I would greatly appreciate your feedback. Thanks
  17. QB0576 is over 100 years old and I would hate to see it end up as “destroyed”. Currently it appears to be stable. However, due to extensive erosion I believe it will not last much longer unless maintenance is performed. (pictures below) Can I submit to the NGS as condition = POOR to alert that maintenance is required (even though the mark is currently OK)? I would include text in the description to clarify the reason for the condition = POOR submission. The NGS Mark Recovery submission sheet lists the POOR option as: Poor, disturbed, mutilated, requires maintenance. What do you think?
  18. Ooooo - that is a great benchmarking photo! (We won't tell anyone the witnesss post was for a cadastral mark). Also, that "Taking Another Look" photo is incredible with the profile view of the head and the clear view of the talons. Nice job NorthWes. Thanks.
  19. Hi Nat, Welcome! Here is the link that explains Benchmarks (For whatever reason, Geocaching recently moved the link location to the very bottom of the main page so that it is harder to find). Benchmarking FAQ Have a look at that page and then feel free to post any questions. The folks here are a friendly and helpful bunch. Good luck with your Benchmarking.
  20. Bill did a great job responding to your question. I just wanted to show you two (non-cadastral) cases where the USFS set marks that are in the NGS database. One is vertical control and the other is horizontal. QQ 35 QC0064: WILSON RD1646:
  21. Really? Y’all are not giving me good news. This is bad. It is a bummer that Garmin did this. I have to load POIs rather than “Favorites” since I often need up to 2,000 points when I am loading benchmark lists. MtnHermit - Unfortunately the Montana is just too pricey to consider (for me). Timpat – That is the same macro that I use – I also like it. Maybe I need to modify my query. My 760 handled POIs just fine and displayed them at the 300 foot zoom. Does anyone know of ANY other model of the older nuvi series that would also show POIs at the 300 foot zoom? If I am going to start looking on Craig’s List I want my options to be as wide as possible. This is funny – I wouldn’t mind giving Garmin money for a brand new GPS yet my two newest purchases will end up being a used 60CSX and now a used 760 because they seem to be superior to newer units for what I want to do. (I only use the 60CSX in heavily wooded searches or searches that I drive to. The other 80% of the time I only want to carry one GPS and I use the nuvi).
  22. This mark, set in a bridge sidewalk, was a fun one. The mark looks OK: However, as you zoom out things begin to not look so good… Here is the entire bridge: We were driving along and saw these concrete pieces in the gravel along the side of the road. Once we figured out what they were I asked Mrs. TillaMurphs: “Wouldn’t it be cool if we could find a disk in there somewhere?!” She and disk dog took off and found the mark before I could. After some research we found out that these pieces were 2.4 miles from their original location. We went to the original location and saw the new bridge. Wow, was it ugly compared to the original. It was not only ugly but the quality of this new bridge was atrocious. The aesthetics of original bridge were unique – it had beautiful painted wooden postwork. Have a look at the photos below to compare this with the ugliness of the new bridge (that is already crumbling in some places). Here is the cool post work on the original: Here is the NEW bridge – crumbling concrete, patches and jagged cuts in the metal rails – ick. More pictures can be found here: QB0668
  23. I haven't read an Orson Scott Card book since the early books in the Ender's Game series. Based on your mention above, I picked up PastWatch at the library yesterday. [i am now done taking this thread off topic.]
  24. After 4 years of extensive use followed by a prolonged illness our Nuvi 760 completely died (R.I.P.). Using a GSAK macro to load POIs into it was perfect for geocaching/benchmarking– it could easily hold thousands of POIs. I figured I would buy one of the new nuvi models as a replacement. However, I read that many of them no longer display POIs at wider zoom levels. Our 760 would display POIs at the 300 foot zoom level. I would have preferred a display at the 500 or 800 foot levels but the 300 foot level was at least acceptable. Now I read that many (most? all?) new nuvis only show POIs at the 200 foot zoom (maximum). That is not good. Does anyone know of a newer nuvi model that displays POIs (not Favorites) at at least a 300 foot zoom level? Any help would be appreciated. I really don’t want to be stuck with buying an older used 760 as my only option. Thanks
  25. zookeepertx, Your log does a very good job of explaining the situation. The "Write Note" option was a good choice for this one in my opinion. Congratulations on your first three searches!
