  1. I guess it's a weird kind of proud that it happened as you were leaving one of my caches.
  2. Generally, we try to take a lighter, more polite tone on these forums than perhaps you are used to on others. No need for insulting outrage.
  3. Can you provide a link please? A Google search came up with nothing. Hard to believe that they would be able to write and pass a law banning caching that quickly.
  4. I've been down there several times since the last Shootout, even found Curmudgenly Gal there one time. You weren't lying about it being underwater, probably about 6 feet deep the last time I was there. Almost to the top of that hill in the middle. I think they may have opened up a spring or something when they bulldozed that new area. I'm not sure I can make the weekend of Feb 18 - it's the state high school wrestling tournament weekend I think. If we do it a day I can make it, bring some .223 ammo and I'll bring along the CAR 15 again. I think a BBQ may also be required.
  5. Check out this thread for a previous discussion about GPS Crazy and my experience with them. If you used Paypal to pay for your purchase, you have resources through them. I got an immediate refund when I threatened to make a Paypal complaint. No apology or explanation, mind you, but I did get my money back.
  6. It sounds like you are referring to a specific cache. In order to be able to answer your question, it would be most helpful if you included the name and GC # of the cache you are referring to.
  7. I've done two underwater caches, actually both on the same day. Not extreme at all if you are a certified diver. Both were designed so that the gps took you to a location on shore, then gave a distance, bearing and approximate depth to find the cache. Both were also "wet" caches, containing only items that wouldn't be damaged by being underwater for extended periods. As I remember, one had a "cache guardian" that you had to describe to the owner to claim credit, and the other had an underwater slate that you signed. I'd be willing to do more underwater caches, but those are the only two in the area. Neither got enough finds for me to bother putting one out myself.
  8. Well, well, well. If wonders never cease. GPSCrazy.com. Let me tell you a little story, a cautionary tale. I planned to buy the wife the new eXplorist 500 (um, that's not a Nuvi 660) that she wanted for Christmas, so after doing the reasonably thorough research that I usually do before making such a purchase, I find that gpscrazy.com has them for the low, low price of $189.99 with free shipping. What a bargain! So I order one on Dec 2 and pay via paypal. No confirmation email and no email regarding shipping. First bad sign. A few days go by and I send an email. Nothing. Another email. Nothing. More days go by. I leave several messages on their customer service line, home phone, cell phone, call me immediately. Nothing. More emails, more messages, nothing. Finally, after two weeks of ABSOLUTELY NO COMMUNICATION from them, I find what appears to be a related website and email stating that failure to immediately provide a refund will result in a complaint to paypal. In what can only be described as a Christmas Miracle, I received a full refund the next day. Took the money straight to the nearest sporting goods store and paid $199 plus tax and left with new eXplorist 500 and a smile on my face. To graphically illustrate: gpscrazy.com , Nearest sporting goods store I'm not really interested in whatever reasons or excuses there might be for this happening, I just know that I learned a little lesson in e-commerce and will be much more of a believer in those bizrate.com ratings that I tended to ignore before.
  9. Please read his post before replying. He only wants the cable. There's one here on Ebay for $15.99.
  10. Our travel bug hotel, Tacoma Travel Bug Vault, has had 738 logs in about 2 years, 9 months, and has seen 695 travel bugs pass through it. That's a little over 5 logs a weeks. It goes through cycles where it will be stuffed with TB's or will only have one or two, but it continues to get a steady stream of logs, including many first time finders for some reason. I think it gets used so frequently because it is very well camoflaged and hidden, but is easily accessible, in a heavily used park and ride lot at the junction of two freeways. There's even a McDonalds there!
  11. Since it's not readily apparent from your post, I wanted to make sure that you are using the waypoint function of your GPS as a goto to lead you to a specific coordinate set, right? Your post almost makes it sound as if you are using the GPS more as an electronic compass, comparing the heading, bearing and distance to the location you want to arrive at. If you set that location as a "goto" waypoint, it's simply a matter of keeping your compass rose or map arrow pointed along the line to the waypoint and monitoring your distance as you get closer. Sorry if this is a "no duh!", but I didn't want to assume too much. Also, some other GPS models, specifically the Magellan SporTrak, have customizable screens that will allow 4 or 5 pieces of information on one screen, including all three that you want to have.
  12. I think what you want, as someone already mentioned, is something like LoJack. When/if you bike is stolen, you report it to the police and the unit is automatically activated. It then sends out a signal to receivers that most departments are equipped with, and your bike can be tracked to its location. LoJack is specifically designed for vehicles, so it should fit your needs. There are GPS units available, but you would essentially have to custom design the installation. Do a search on GPS tracking units.
  13. If you just contact Magellan they will send you one for free. I know, because they sent me one.
  14. Despite whatever action you may have taken, without any kind of logs from you, it makes it appear like you ignored it.
  15. You must be joking, right? You've been around long enough to know how it works. Someone posted a maintenance note in May, which was never addressed, numerous DNF's and the reviewer disabled it a month ago. MINIMALLY you should have posted some kind of note on the page back in May and probably disabled it yourself in September. At some point you evidently edited the cache page, but you should have posted some kind of log addressing the condition of the cache. That way, even if your emails didn't get through, at least there would have been something from you on the cache page. I'd say it's not real surprising under the circumstances that the cache got archived.
  16. Amen, Brother! And before y'all ask, no, we do not have a magical machine that we can drop an eyelash into, and get a match in the time it takes to play a commercial. Glad you said it before I did. I can't be the only one that thinks this whole thread is reading like a Hardy Boys mystery. As much as we'd all like to live in a fantasy world where all criminals are brought to justice, especially the ones who affect us personally, the reality is far from it. I'm a detective and currently carry a caseload of around 50 open cases. Everything from burglaries, thefts (in the actual thousands, not just a bunch of little items that might add up to a couple hundred) assaults, death threats, child pornography, identity thefts (some with over 100 victims- from one guy) check frauds and a 17 year old unsolved murder. The reality is that when a case comes across my desk that has a relatively low dollar loss and/or victim impact with little hope of being successfully investigated (meaning a specific suspect identified and enough actual evidence to convict) without a significant expenditure of time and resources, it gets closed. I would LOVE to solve every crime I find. I understand the reality that it is not possible. I am expected to make reasoned judgments to determine which cases I should spend my limited time on. Even though I've been a geocacher for several years, I would very likely not spend any time investigating this case. The several DAYS worth of time I would have to spend on it could be much better used on higher priority cases, of which there is never any shortage. You've got three cops telling you the truth. Please believe us. I say all of this to put perspective on the drama that has unfolded in this thread. WAY too much drama. Which brings me to the next point. Despite the natural and sometimes overwhelming desire to do SOMETHING about these kinds of cache problems, the time proven method of successfully dealing with them is to COMPLETELY IGNORE IT AND STOP TALKING PUBLICALLY ABOUT IT!!! This has been repeatedly suggested in this thread but repeatedly ignored. In the Northwest forums, if someone starts a thread on a cache maggot/pirate/thief/whatever, it immediately receives a response instructing them to stop talking about it. Consequently, the problem usually goes away pretty quickly. I've personally seen it happen. To summarize: 1. Not a priority crime. It's not likely ever going to be investigated. 2. Quit talking about it and it will stop.
  17. It doesn't matter to me what you call it. I just wish you'd capitalize every now and then.
  18. Well, when it was pointed out to him, the cacher who posted the log agreed that it was rude, not honest, and he changed it, much to his credit. I applaud his integrity and HONESTY in admitting that his log was too harsh, which has been the point all along.
  19. Perhaps the difference is puzzles you have to solve at home and those you have to solve after arriving at a location. I've found that the puzzles you have to solve at home tend to be of a much higher quality, and much less like what the OP is complaining of. I agree that many of those just seem like busy work. I'm already in the area, just post coords that send me to the cache. Typically for me, (OK, actually my wife, who does most of the puzzles) solving the more involved puzzles itself is the biggest reward, the key to unlocking the secret location of the cache.
  20. Oh please. As if there were no difference between being honest and being mean, unkind, inappropriate, negative or a jerk. Apparently, the cacher that posted the offending log agrees with Kit Fox, since he edited his log to include a very sincere apology. You can be honest while still being civil. The situation has been resolved. How about moving on instead of just jumping in to attack what you perceive to be someones vulnerability? Don't you think it is unfair for kit fox to drag this issue into the forums and then delete his log entry. So which is it? You bash him for posting the log or you bash him for removing it. Pick one or the other, not both.

  22. Generally, reviewers have find numbers in at least the mid triple digits, a fair number of hides and are pretty well known in the caching community. They are also usually active in their local caching organization, attend or even organize CITO and caching events, and most importantly, have an established reputation that others respect. Think, "Leader". Note: The views expressed in this post are for educational purposes only and are not necessarily those of Groundspeak or Geocaching.com. Any resemblence to any real person either living or dead is unintentional and purely coincidental.
  23. I agree, MUCH easier, cheaper and less bulky if you just buy the LED's that are designed to blink. I believe Radio Shack has them, as well as most other electronic supply sources. I have been very pleased in the past getting stuff from All Electronics. Cheap prices, quick shipping and instructions for their electronic kits are written in real english, not badly translated chinese.
