  1. I emaile Pfoe yesterday but have not heard from him yet. In the mean time, maybe another cache volunteer approver can answer a questiong for me. If I were to relist the same cache with the same coodinates with a modified cache page that still gives a proper warning but tones down the hype, does it have a chance of being approved? I am not trying to sneak it by Pfoe since I will mention in the note to approver that I am relisting and I will be very explicit as to how the cache is placed.
  2. Yikes!! Now they archived my Caution! It's a Long Way Down. Definately no climing involved there. That is 6 caches archived so far. Man, I guess I will have to start just hiding 1/1 caches. I will be emailing Pfoe today for some clarification.
  3. I am happy to hear that many have enjoyed my Climbin' & Findin' cache series. I was shocked and dissappointed to see they were archived. As Harry the Dolphin pointed out, my pics exaggerating what the cache experience would be like definately did not help me. I definately think this one helped sink them: Climbin'&Findin'5 Didn't they see the frog with his tongue sticking out meaning it was only a joke. LOL I am going to contact the local cache approver and plead my case. I will give him a better description of the caches and I will ask him if I change the name and definately change the pics will he unarchive them. The pics definately killed them since the 6th in the series (Another Secaucus Panorama) wasn't archived and only had a picture of a garbage dump. And the first one had a cartoon of a mountain climber so they didn't take it seriously? Maybe if I put photos like these in my cache descriptions I wouldn't have any problems: I always enjoy putting the cache description together and I guess I will have to tone back my sense of humor a bit. No more joking about "While you don't have to be a professional rock climber to access this cache" and "if you lose your footing and fall down, it may be the last time you go caching" I respect the judgement of the cache approvers and understand they have to respond immediately to any complaints about breaking the rules. I might be down but I am not out. The 8th in the series is coming up soon but will be named "This is not a rock climbing cache #1" Thanks again for your support. -Bill (slukster)
  4. I guess I am in the minority when I say I prefer paper caching over using a seperate PDA/ car GPS with GSAK info. I like having the paperwork in front of me so I can make notes about the cache and its location. I know you can do this with most GPS's but the entering of this info is time consuming. If I had the bucks to buy an Oregon or Colorodo I would go with that for a all-in-one unit but to carry two units around is a pain in the butt to me. I often look at the paperwork several times as I am approaching the cache and I drop the paperwork all of the time. To have both hands tied up with GPS's and having to look at the handheld and scroll through the Nuvi 2*** just doesn't work for me (I have tried it). It is a great system that is set up to allow you to do paperless caching but only if it is in one unit for me.
  5. http://blogs.consumerreports.org/cars/2008...g-gps-test.html Which unit will come out on top?
  6. I agree that if there is a note on the TB stating its goal, then you should only take it if you can help it in the right direction. But many times the bug's goal is not marked and the only way to find out its goal is to go to the TB page. Most times when I go out caching I print out the cache s I will pursue that day but I rarely look to see if there are any TB's in the caches. I am pleasantly surprised when I do find TB's. The problem becomes that without being marked on the TB, there is no way of me knowing its goals and it is possible that I might pick up a bug that I can not help in the right direction and it might appear that I don't know what I am doing. But it is an innocent mistake in not knowing the TB's goal if it is not not marked.
  7. I have read the threads on going paperless and find that trying to use my NUVI to hold my cache description info is a pain in the butt. Having to use both my handheld and the NUVI at the same time doesn't work for me. I like to have the paper in hand to write notes on the find and trying to type info on my Legend HCX takes more time than it is worth. And thinking about dropping an electronic device that isn't built for the rugged outdoors isn't something I want to worry about. Now for those who have the Colorado or better who are able to have everything in one device... I am jealous. I ran into one cacher who had a Colorado and he showed me how it worked and I was drooling. Maybe one day... Now this thread isn't meant to start a discussion/ argument on how great/ bad paperless caching is. I just wanted to bring up a suggestion on how to use paper but cut down on the amount of sheets you have to carry. What I do is open up Microsoft Word (although any word processing type program should work) to a blank document. I then go to the cache description and copy only the info I need from the description (cache name, coordinates, only the key info from the descrition, the hint and any log entries I might find useful) and then paste it into the Word document. I can usually fit around 4 cache descriptions on to one sheet of paper. When there are more than one cache I am seeking in the same park, I try to list them in the order that I think that I will find them so I can go right down the page but that isn't important. Then I have all of the information easily available when I get home to log the finds. Does anyone else have any suggestions on how to make caching more efficient? Paperless caching is great and the person who came up with all of the programming to make it possible is a genius and has done a great service for the caching community. But a this point it isn't for me.
  8. I think this might annoy some FTF hounds since they might have to make the trip to the same park several days in a row but I am all about keeping things fair. You present a fascinating dilemma: which is more annoying: the FTF hounds or the "dribble out the caches" people? Seems pretty much a tossup to me. I guess we can take a survey... To tell you the truth neither bother me so I am neutral. Except for the fact that people will be voting to say that I am annoying.

  10. I have hidden 2 or 3 caches at a time and have the cache listing all set up to be published but only post 1 at a time to be published if they are in the same park or within a couple of miles of each other. In other words, I won't click the box for the cache to be reviewed until the previous cache has been published. In my area there are around 4 FTF hounds who I see claimed the FTF on my caches as well as most of the others around. I don't care who is FTF but I like to give everyone a chance at the FTF rather than the first person who gets to the park gets all of the FTF's which usually happens. By listing them on different days, the same person MIGHT get all of the FTF, but at least everyone gets an equal opportunity for it.
  11. I had bought a Garmin car GPS for my wife for her birthday and while searching the Garmin website for downloads for it, I came across geocaching. My first 3 caches were found using the 250w and then I started reading the forums and decided I just had to get a handheld GPS. I now use a combination of both GPS' when caching.
  12. I found a beer/ soda coozy (the foam cylinder shaped item that you put your soda/ beer into to keep it cold and your hands warm) which was a sig item for someone. It had the geocaching insignia and the cachers who left its name on it. I was very excited to find it. I use it all of the time.
  13. I can definately see why a person would think that the cache they just found was not in the correct spot and want to return it to where it should be. Even when the cache description says return it exactly how you found it, it appears that where you found it is not correct based on the cache description. You think that the cacher before you misplaced it. Just last week this occurred to me. Some yahoo cache owner got mad at me and cussed me out because I moved the container from a spot that clearly wasn't where it was supposed to be. In his cache description he clearly says that if you can't return it to where you found it, then don't do this cache. I mentioned in the log that I had moved it based on the cache description, and to let the cache owner know that it didn't appear to be where he had placed so he could double check it to make sure it was returned to the right place. He was real sore. I guess I should have returned it as I found it and then emailed the CO to let him know that I didn't think it was in the correct spot and let him determine if it was replaced correctly. Because he was such a jerk to me I am going to go back and move it to somewhere completely different and then ask him if that is where he wanted it. Unbelievable. briansnat, I am just messing with you. I understood your frustration.
  14. I think this has been over-analyzed quite a bit. Keep in mind this is found in the "FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions" section. So TPTB are answering a frequently asked question with the 3 "rules" of geocaching. They aren't necessarily calling them rules. They are just quoting the FAQ and answering it. Would calling them "guidelines" make you feel better?
  15. So far I only have one taker for the chess challenge. Luckily his son also plays so if I can not find anyone else then it will be a family showdown.
  16. Thank you for the info. That is what I was hoping could be done. I wasn't sure if a number would be assigned until after being reviewed.
  17. I am going to be hiding my first cache and I wanted to print up a nice FTF certificate and well as a sheet to place in the cache with the cache info. Is there a way of submitting the cache listing but not actually posting it to the site until after I am issued a number? I want to be able to type in the cach # on all of the documents but I am afraid the FTF might get to it before I am able to get back with a printed certificate. Thank you for your help. -slukster
  18. I posted this in the TB forum but it was suggested that I post here in the regional forum as well. Please help! I am currently in possession of the following two travel bugs whose mission is to play each other in Washington Square Park in New York City. TBJ7WP Black Knights TBJ1RC White Knights Unfortunately I am unable to play chess so I am trying to get two fellow cachers together to help complete the mission. I can meet at the park anytime during the week at lunch time or can arrange to meet up on the weekends. The cachers must be willing to have their pictures taken playing chess to be posted to the TB websites. If I can not find any cachers to play I will have to find a couple of muggles to complete the mission. I hope you can help!! -Bill
  19. I wasn't going to give the TB to the muggles but would ask any players I find if they would play a game with the chess pieces. This will have to be the best I can do if I can't find any cachers to play. I will try your suggestion of posting in the regional forums. Thanks!!
