  1. How about 5 ammo cans stacked one on top of each other?
  2. Try streetmap.co.uk instead and hit their handy "convert" button. You'll have to convert the DD.ddddddd to DD MM.mmm yourself but thats a handy divide by 60 for the .ddddddd part.
  3. Ah! I see from the description that it's by a playground, perhaps it was ground maintenance staff from the council or whoever maintains the playground. I personally know 4 out of the 5 DNFers and as the 5th was with one of the other 4 at the time, I think I can vouch for all of them as not being up to such tricks, in spite of Pip's FTF obsession! Personally as a solo gent cacher I get quite uncomfortable looking for caches near playgrounds "Mummy? What's that strange man doing in the bushes over there?" and before you know it there's a small lynch party of parents! Don't let it get you down, I think in this case it's coincidence rather than anything sinister.
  4. Not knowing the cache area it's difficult to comment. I've had a similar experience at the hands of well meaning conservation volunteers. The tree in question was a rather magnificent oak being smothered by thick ivy and they disturbed my cache in the process. They did leave a very apologetic note in the logbook.
  5. Try putting ",UK" after the postcode - that normally works for me. That said Maldon,UK still comes up as Malton, UK when I search.
  6. I have all the bleeps turned off too. If you've not already done so, consider getting the rechargeable battery pack.
  7.  ooooh I think I've hurt myself !!! I'd be the last person to be invited to be a reviewer!
  8. well, I'll have a plump for Cassandy... Nah ... too keen a cacher and a fairly fast caching rate to boot. Besides aren't reviewers supposed to live monastic lives in servitude and only occasionally venture out into the world for events ? I can't see Cass going for that!
  9. I always keep a note of the tracking number for the rare cases this happens. If it does I grab the TB back and send a polite email to remind the original grabee that it's only polite to give the original placer time to log their find. I also offer them the tracking number just in case they've already placed that TB in another cache they've still to log. It's only happened the once (touch wood) and it was by a relative newbie.
  10. Ahh so you were in Maldon last night ... hmmm ... I wonder ... the clues fit ... I think I may have had a natter with you last night ... See you at the next one
  11. Quite a few in the East actually, but then they're probably filling in for The BeeK who is no doubt on call again. The red duster moniker surely would indicate some merchant navy lark connection - perhaps Portsmouth or Plymouth based?
  12. Sort of ... but you have to access it via the Play/Hide & Seek a cache/ menu option
  13. No you wouldn't I'm pretty sure you could just have archived the old cache and reused the same number for the new one. There are plenty of examples where this has been done before (CM53 Pyrford, CM1114 Littleton etc)
  14. I've had a string of 503's all night. Occasionally get a cache page to load but the maps seem to be "shot" I guess someone kicked a plug somewhere in Seattle.
  15. Change Satsync's preferences to not download pictures/spoiler pictures, the speed difference is substantial (but of course, you lose the pictures..) Already done! I think there was a problem with the SD card itself. Reformatted it and put the OS maps and licence files back and the upload speed was dramatically improved last night.
  16. Satmap Active 10 with OS full UK 50K mapcard, and as backup an Oregon 450 (came with OS UK 50K maps) for the chirps, Wherigo and when the satmap is in the shop for maintenance. The Satmap acts as my in-car navigation aid ie I map read myself! Software wise - use the SatSync software which I'm hating at the moment for being sooooo slooooow, to upload cache descriptions. - GSAK for marshalling the gpx files - back of my hand for noting the letter/number combinations associated with multis/puzzles. voila paperless caching.
  17. I may have missed the finer points of Oregon usage as mine's just gone back to the shop less than a couple of weeks after purchase. For puzzles I add child waypoints in GSAK (marked as Final Location). When loading to my SatMap this comes up as little blue blobs for the cache & description and a little green flag for the FL waypoint. Not sure whether this would help at all on an Oregon. I've not yet managed to download a GPX worth of data yet - but that's another question for later.
  18. ... and you get the landowners permission ... but that goes without saying ... doesn't it ??
  19. Thanks for the feedback. I called Garmin support and following emailed advice it would appear that the card reader in the Oregon itself is faulty. The microSD card appears OK and works with Basecamp when plugged direct into the PC but not when in the Oregon. Awaiting confirmation from Garmin support but I guess I'll be sending it back to them.
  20. Not a caching newbie but definitely a Garmin newbie. Just bought an Oregon 450 which came with an OS 50K microSD card. Registered the Oregon and placed the uSD card in it but the maps are not coming up. Tried to activate the maps but the product code is not recognised. Emailed Garmin but as yet 12 days later still no reply. Should the SD card just work "as is" or does it need activating? Did anyone else have similar problems? Any suggestions gratefully received.
  21. I know he was being flippant, but threatening serious injury or death is a serious matter. I was once caught in a shower of shot pellets whilst doing GC1JC7D Miss-tree on Blind Lane. I suspect a farmer shooting pigeons or something but what goes up must come down - it was like being in a mini hail storm!
  22. Lundy does have a lot to answer for, doesn't it. Most of the change-ringers I know who cache, started following a trip there. I on the other hand, spotted it on Percy's blog (who had indeed been to Lundy) In addition to ringing I can also add curling to the list of eccentric hobbies. I know of ringing cachers and of curling cachers but at the moment I think I'm the only one in the Venn diagram of the two.
  23. Mine's a SatMap Active 10 and have taken it on many flights both domestic and international. To be honest the security checks have been more interested in my mobile phone and not batted an eyelid at the GPS.
