  1. Unfortunately you will need a windows machine to make use of the garmin mapsource maps. Being a linux user myself, I have tried to get mapsource to work using wine and even codeweavers crossover to no avail. I have relinquished myself to using an old laptop with windows 2000 installed and mapsource to put maps on my VistaC. My other 2 machines are running linux and so would the laptop if I could get mapsource to work with an emulator. For now, you can still use gpsbabel to transfer waypoints on your linux box.
  2. I would try a master reset on the unit. Be aware this will delete all user information suchs as waypoints, tracks, routes etc. RESET SEQUENCE 1. With power off, press and hold FIND, PAGE and Click Stick, and then press POWER. 2. Release all four buttons after 5-10 seconds when the welcome page is displayed 3. All memory is now clear. 4. Place the unit outside with a clear view of the sky until satellites are acquired (The unit will display "3D GPS Location.")
  3. Unless you changed the icon to a geocache icon before you downloaded it to the GPS you will need to manually change it in the GPS. Once you change the icon from a waypoint flag to the geocache treasure chest icon, the compass page will work properly. Take a look in the manual
  4. Sounds like the datum format in easygps changed to decimal degrees...check your easygps settings.
  5. That was me and living in New England you need to watch out for these things. Some are big enough to swallow your car whole
  6. If memory serves me well, I believe you have to buy the NG Expansion pack for $19.95 to get USB connectivity. Check their website for more info...
  7. Sounds like us LegendC/VistaC and even the 60's series owners should notify Garmin that this is something we would like to have. Maybe they can add it in the next firmware release or two
  8. Slightly off topic, but it could be used to complement GPS as well...rather than compete. http://www.boston.com/business/technology/..._find_yourself/
  9. Milbank, I know you want my 60CS...hahahha. You'd be happy to know that I gave the unit a dunk test after my recently taking it apart. It passed with flying colors, I let it sit in the kitchen sink for 20 mins today with no problems It even kept a satellite lock!
  10. That's fantastic! I'm so glad your happy with your VistaC. Did you think we would steer you wrong Also, sorry to hear about the car that's a bummer
  11. This post may be helpful http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=98139
  12. hahahaha, good one... can i interest you in a VistaC then? just kidding
  13. I'm not sure if it is a battery although it looks like one. I didn't try to remove it I would doubt that it's a battery as I don't believe there is any functioanlity in the unit that would require it. I wish I had the technical knowledge to put in a larger memory chip, now wouldn't that make a great customization business
  14. As for the antenna, I believe it slides into a plastic tube which is covered by the rubber. I didn't run my finger up there to see how high it goes, but if you squeeze the antenna the rigidity of it would suggest so. As for the button pad, the problem is not the buttons themselves but that contact sheet that the buttons push down on. As you can see in the photo, they would just replace the ribbon cable with the button contacts. Hope that helps! The only tricky part about putting it back together was having to use some RTV clear sealant on the top of the back cover that attaches to the rubber antenna cover. Most likely for waterproofing as I had to peel it away when taking it apart...now for the dunk test
  15. I apologize for the photo size, I should have resized them before posting them. If I have time tonight, maybe I'll do that. In the interim, I will post a warning about large photo sizes
  16. Hi all, Call me crazy, but just for fun I took apart my 60CS so I could see what was inside and how it was put together. Below is the link to the photos I took, just click on the thumbnail to see the bigger piture. Enjoy! PHOTO SIZE WARNING - these are large untouched photos. Users on dial-up may want to wait until I can resize them. Garmin 60CS photos
  17. It's basically not a perfect fit, the window doesn't fit the larger display of the color etrex's and it's a bit tight due to longer the width. Maybe I'm just being picky
  18. I suppose this is another option, as it appears to have a larger clear case area. Unfortunately, you can't enlarge the pic... http://www.thegpsstore.com/detail.asp?product_id=BE100
  19. Hi gang, I'm trying to find a new case for my VistaC. Is the case below my only option? I haven't been able to find anything else? If so, what has the feedback been on it? Thanks! http://www.gilsson.com/garmin_gps/cases/etcn.htm
  20. No, what he is saying is that you will need to install the software on any other computer you might use. You just can't insert the cd in any computer and start copying maps. If you have a laptop, you install the software once and take the laptop with you. This way if you need to change maps, power up the laptop and plug in the gps and start copying.
  21. In my eyes, the quad / patch antenna debate is a mute issue with these new improved units. I can't comment on the explorist antenna, but between my 60CS and VistaC I don't see any difference in sensitivity. In fact, the vistac will sometimes do better than the 60cs.
  22. The reason it works is that the firmware is similar in both units, but the key here is that the 60C/CS has the USB functionality which is what you need
