  1. Some users are reporting seeing 33; I have not seen it in Seattle. I have not seen 35 recently. I see 36 grab the signal and then shut off - the "do not use" message.

Here in MA I have not seen 33 or 35 for 3 days now

  2. Firmware 2.5 is a problem or not ?

Batteries, which type is a problem which not ?

    what should be avoided ?

new firmware is not a problem, works fine for me

Batteries - lithiums have caused issues due to voltage. use alkaline and NiMH for now untill Garmin updates the firmware to fix the lithium problem

  3. As an update, I tried this myself and the master reset will not erase the maps on the transflash card and it will also not reset the information you put into the welcome screen. It will re-initialize everything else though...

any specific reason why you had to reset?

Just curious to see what would happen... I like to tinker

  4. Since mapping is not a big deal for you, memory requirements wouldn't be high. I would recommend the older Garmin 60CS or VistaC as the prices are coming down since the new X units are out. It has everything you are looking for and you could load the topo maps which would be beneficial on long trips in the woods to find a cache.

One more thing, since the electronic compass is important to you these units typically have mapping capabilities so consider it an added bonus

  5. As of now... no, you cannot find that out from the gps unit itself. A lot of users have been complaining to Garmin about that and hopefully they will address it in the next firmware update.

You will need to use mapsource and hook up the gps to the computer to see how much map memory you have available...
