  1. I would say Minnewaska is actually south of Mid Hudson - giving what is considered the Hudson Valley Region goes from the norther tip of Westchester to Albany the middle is almost around the Catskills.... There is plenty of good caches there....

One of my all time favorites: http://coord.info/GCPY3E . Expect to spend 9 hours with more than half of it off trail....

  2. +1

Version 8 is amazing.... Being able to get 6000 caches on the fly is fantastic for vacation trips... I used to spend an hour setting up PQs for my trips to make sure I get enough coverage (1000 caches around big german cities don't get you far) - now I can do it on the fly.... Upgrade discount was a very nice bonus... Even at full price it's worth every penny and then some....

  3. I am 75% sure I had a sighting 2 years ago in the Adirondacks.

The big guy was pretty far away (spotted movement on the next ridge over while bushwhacking through a wilderness area - then saw him with my field glasses)...

(Unless it was a monster sized bobcat)

  4. Removal gizmo works fine...

    And be careful out there...

I have been diagnosed with latent Lyme in February. On Antibiotics, Herbs, etc... for 9-12 month if all goes welll. It's no fun - but it won't keep me out of the woods... (The keep riding when you fall of a horse motto is fully applied)...

I have learned a whole new level of respect and personal preparation when heading into nature...

  5. I hear what you're saying and I agree. Just reporting what they are saying over there.

I'd like to understand it all myself. Evidently the htc phones work fine in airplane mode. Droids do not.

If you continue having these outages in specific areas or from time to time across multiple devices I would report them to the FAA... There is something fishy that should be looked at...

  6. I have hiked in what I would consider almost 1.5 terrain in the summer over the last two weeks with snowshoes and can fully echo Jonboy's warnings... I had two slides where the frozen layer on top of the snow was too frozen to stop the snowshoes but not frozen enough to grip the spikes that are in the snowshoes... Thankfully it was relatively level so besides a 'oh shi....' comment nothing happend... But I won't be going into any more challenging terrain until this mess is gone...

  7. I am with the last two posters... I actually wish it would also go off if you start moving away from the cache again (after a short period to compensate for trail bends etc...) - I am guilty of overshooting a cache (that wasn't directly on the trail) by more than a mile on a long hike more than once by just enjoying the hike and the scenery - so for me the wakeup call is welcome...

  8. I had this happen repeatedly with all firmware versions. There where multiple threads in the past about this subject.

It seems to happen when there is a lot of reception issues (e.g. double path/signal bounce) - for me mostly when I am close to difficutl terrain (rocks with lot's of RF reflectiveness or close to steep rocky slopes)... The problem is there is no indication that accuracy is off and there is no self correction. I have searched for caches 400-500 feet of GZ because my GPS thought I was there... Power off and Power on and within 5 seconds it showed me the correct GZ 500 feet away...

I have dumped my Colorado 300 and switched to a GPSMAP 62S - so far this has not happend with the 62S...

  9. If I move off my 60 I think I'll go to the 62. I like the buttons so I can use hem without having to watch the screen. Also, they don't take up any real estate from the screen as 'buttons' on a touchscreen would do. I'd like the convenience of the field note entry on the OR, but that is less important to me than the general usability of the core GPS functions.

You just gotta think of what is important to YOU and how each device's features fit your priorities.

I just upgraded to a 62s. For me the buttons are most important in the winter when it's 20F outside and I am wearing gloves... Touchscreen is kind of hard to use then (tried it)....

I would go with the 62s or the oregon 450 if you prefer touch screen. Both are an excellent choice and perfect for paperless...

  10. Alright, I sobered up for Halloween :D Here is a nice 22.0 mile loop in Ramapo Valley County Reservation and Ringwood State Park.

Looks like you missed a couple of caches - wuss.

He was running so fast he overshot them
