  1. Oh for the people who have bad luck and fall off before trying again? I see! Good one!
  2. Okay. Not sure about this one, but it's random enough to be quite amousing. Thanks!
  3. Have you checked the Geocaching store through Sunrise Identity? They can ship most items overnight if necessary.
  4. I log a DNF if I spent 30 minutes or more searching the same area and coming up empty. Of course that is after looking everywhere and making sure that I still am unable to find it.
  5. I'm putting together a geocache that will likely have a 4-star rating for terrain. Accordingly, I think that whoever finds the cache will need some sort of comic relief once they reach it as the climb although not vertical requires the use of hands. I don't mean to spoil the surprise, but the cache will be located atop of a 50 foot cliff with a very steep trail going along side of it. So far I've come up with only one humorous thing to put into the cache. And that is a handful of my lost marbles. Actually, it's just a handful of ordinary marbles, but as you can see, there is a joke attached. What I need are more such items with related humor. Items must be able to be found around the home or purchased for a small price. I'm welcome to any and all ideas as long as they are both clean (family-friendly) and funny. Thanks for everybody's input; I hope to get some more ideas soon.
  6. I was thinking of doing something like this. On the way to one of my caches, you have to pass by a very old dumpsite. It has some very large items, though. How they got there I have no idea, and removing them may be somewhat difficult. Is it acceptable to post the coordinates of the trash heap with the cache listing?
  7. Personally, I think the team idea is great. If it has been done before, how does one join and/or start a team?
  8. You have to give the cacher credit for having good taste in beverage selection!
  9. Sorry, but I don't agree with bending the rules for any reason. There are rules for a reason and if you bend one rule to satisfy a paticular group, you will have to bend them to satisfy another. Can't people just do their fundrasing elsewhere?
  10. Where I'm presently living, there are 4 geocaches within the town limits, 3 of which are mine. GPS devices are unheard of around this area and nobody I know has ever owned or even seen one in use. Sad, really.
  11. That's quite a nice first to find prize! Unfortunately, it's beyond my budget at the present time.
  12. People are always doing the strangest of things. Um... Oh yeah, I am putting a useless benchmark on my property for my own personal use. I see now how this is related.
  13. Welcome to your new obsession, err um... hobby.
  14. I'm thinking that since I have a budget for this project of about $100 or less, I'll be doing it myself. I had no idea that such projects could run up a price tag into the thousands, but I guess with that kind of accuracy, you pay for what you get. The property I'm going to own very soon has all the pins and the like which were set there when it was surveyed a few years ago. I'm thinking that for this project, since I'm the only one who is really going to get anything out of it, an accuracy of +/- 5 feet is accurate enough for my purposes. I admit that I too am amused by projects of this nature despite what other people think. By the way, thanks for the background info; I had absolutely no idea that benchmarks set by the NGS were of such high accuracy. I guess you could say that I have a much higher appreciation of the marks now.
  15. Go and buy a lottery ticket. If you win, remember who suggested it to you. RESCUE 557
  16. Skip the PDA version; I've heard nothing but bad things about them (I was going to buy one myself, actually). Go with one that is suitable for the outdoors. Mine is completely waterproof and after all the falls it has taken, it has stood up remarkably well. For general info, I have a Magellian Meridian Platinum and have been very happy with it for several years.
  17. I have a Meridian Platinum and yesterday after not using it for almost a month and moving to a new location it took roughly 15 minutes to get a sat lock. And I was in the middle of an open field with a superb view of the sky. Not to worry, sometimes it takes a little bit longer than usual. Don't be nervous.
  18. Thanks for the great information and resources everybody! I'm thinking about placing my own benchmark on my property that designates the exact center of the property. Call me crazy but I think it's kinda neat; I just don't know how much it will cost for a survey crew to place it in the middle of 8 acres.
  19. How can I get my own benchmark? I really think it would be neat to have one on my own property!
  20. I never thought of that. Not that I needed to, but its a good idea.
  21. you can hide it in the air you can hide it anywhere you can hide it in a town but never dig up the ground you can hide it in a tree but beware of nests of bees Sorry, couldn't resist a little humor. Good luck with your cache!
  22. I use mine mostly for Geocaching, occasionally for backwoods hiking where I'm off trail, and sometimes (once or twice, maybe) for search and rescue. I keep it with me about 99% of the time because I tend to get lost in unfamiliar places.
  23. That website is totally killer!
  24. I don't think that water depths are included in the map. I could be wrong, but I have a Magellan Meridian as well and it doesn't show water depth either.
