  3. start here http://www.geocacher-u.com/101/index.html and i'll look for more.
  4. I don't know if you have found this yet ,up at the top of the main page of this forum section is a faq topic about halfway down is paperless caching with a mac.
  5. I understand your want of a good book, but I feel most all of the info you could want is right here in these fourms. If you google "geocaching" you will find more info the you can read in a month of sundays plus one website can link you to ten more. Start searching and reading and come back here and ask questions about anything you don't understand.
  6. I use cachmate (sorry I don't know how to make a hyper link) I think its at smitteyware .com. it's $8.00 to buy and worth much more.
  7. I use a Handspring visor,I picked up at a yard sale for $25.00 It is GREAT.That said any palm or palm clone with the palm operating system will work. mine is the black and white screen No proplem reading in bright daylight, the backlight for night use is not that great. Ther are newer color models out there but some are more diffacult to read in bright sunlight than others. a search will turn a the best color one to use ,BUT I don't feel that color is neeeded. Mine also uses 2 AA's the newer ones have buitin rechargable batts. Get one that connects to your computer with a USB con. not a serial port (newer puters have a few Usb ports and no extra serial ports and USB is faster )
  8. Mine is a Handspring Visor with the Palm operating system. Google palm pda (that stands for personal digital assistant) ,read and learn ,they are really easy to use and it makes caching much easier. Also when you start looking for a palm be sure it connects to the computer with a USB connection not a serial port connector.
  9. Sorry about the above post, still learning the forums. Miragee is exatly right about paperless I made the switch two months ago ahavent looked back. You can get palms on ebay or I bought mine at a yard sale cheap. but till then I would get a three ring binder and put the printouts in gc# order to make them easy to sort through. Welcome to "caching the obsesion"
  10. I guess I am still green enough that I am still having fun with all of them. If I roll into a spot I don't like I move on,because, MY WORST DAY CACHING IS STILL BETTER THAN MY BEST DAY WORKING.

  13. 1. Load PQ into GSAK 2. Use GSAK to export to palm. 3. Use palm install (hot sync) to move export to palm GSAK is silent here since it is not involved in the process 4. Import to cachmate on palm 5. go caching, loging finds on palm 6. come home and export logs on cachemate. 7. use hot sync to move found logs to pc GSAK is silent here since it is not involved in the process. 8. use cachematelogging.gsk (GSAK macro) to log finds and update found data base. For a start try here . The article uses express logger, which is okay, I just prefer cachmatelogging.gsk since it is more intergrated. (besides, I'm biased) cm2gpx is loaded when you install GSAK. It is found in the GSAK directory. If you go to the GSAK forum, General Topics there are many that will jump in and help you. Just ask your questions. linky . Digest this for a while and come back for more questions. Jim Thanks for the quick reply. Your step 6 export logs on cachmate. Does that involve more than just turning on palm and hitting hotsnc button???
  14. hello I am new to this hobby (obsession) . I have a map60csx and handspring visor with cachmate. I am using gsak to load PQs ( I have this much figured out.) My troubles come when I hotsynk to gsak,I see no response on screen, or maybe I dont know where to find it. I just downloaded my gps to gsak and now I have double entries for each cache,I guess I should have dumped gsak first. GSAK seems to be a wonderful program but it does about 10,000 things more than the non programmer like me can deal with.SO can anybody dumb it down for me with a step by step process that will ease my flustrations. Also PLEASE DO NOT point me to ANY of the GSAK HELP links I have read them till my eyes crossed,IE.load cachemat logs and finds, use cm2gpx file. OK how do I find or make this file? Please do not take offense to my post,I know I may not have worded this P.C. PS I was going to ask this on the GSAK forum but there was no one there that I could see. Thanks in advance for any help
