If the individual is offended, then they chose to take offense. What other people think only affects each person to the extent that they allow.
And as far as misinterpreting the written word, well... welcome to the internet! Hehehehehe

I am reminded of an episode of the Simpsons. Homer & family just walked out of a movie theatre watching Star Wars. Homer says out loud to his family "I can't believe Darth Vader was Luke's father!". The line going into the theatre gets all mad for spoiling it... hehehe
However, I don't think it is impolite to say hi to anyone on the trail (geocaching or hiking). Not everyone seems to think so, but what can you do? Just be nice and be yourself. If 'they' want to take an attitude, brush 'em off and go about your business. Their loss.

Bought a GPS for hiking purposes. Did internet search looking for ways to fiddle with it (bad habit, broken more toys this way) and came across geocaching.com.
Strange thing is, the caches themselves are just an excuse to get me out into the (relative) wild... The caches are just icing on the cake..
I've also found (but not yet done) so many local trails it blows my mind... Great fun!

All offense-taking is at the receivers end. I could say the sky is a pretty shade of blue and someone could take offense cuz they like the color of a sunset sky better. (I've known people like this).
I've also known people you could walk up to and tell them they were <insert worse possible insult here> and they aren't fazed because they are confident in who they are and are not worried about what someone else thinks about them.
I guess I'm somewhere in the middle...

Thanks everybody.
I think I'll take Kealia's advice and find at least 10 of mixed difficulty.
I've got all sorts of ideas that I'm 'borrowing' from the forums but nothing beats being in the woods... especially when you work 3rd shift and you feel like a vampire. It's just one more excuse to check out the local trails I never knew existed.
As an aside, I'm only planning on one hide so I can keep it updated properly. I know me - if I bite off more than I can chew I'll end up neglecting it all.
Thanks again for your replies everyone...
As soon as I get comfortable with it I'll post it in here (unless that's bad form...?)

At what point in your 'career' did you decide that you had enough experience to create a cache?
Would you recommend that someone new to the activity complete a set amount of 'finds' or just go for it?

Hmmm, grocery store bags. Small, light... and cheap! Just my style! Or reality, anyway :I *sigh*
I like the trash bag in a film canister idea - If I create a cache soon, I'll put a few in there for people to take. Good idea Rubeeslpr!

I don't think the GPS will work inside anyway.
Check with your town clerks office for property maps - they should be able to tell you the owner.
Perhaps they would give you permission to place it on the land somewhere nearby - make it a theme cache for Halloween or something...

Well, I'd like to pick up trash along the way, but I don't want to make a big event out of it.
I can't see carrying a 30gal trashbag with me.
What do you guys use?

Ah, thanks Anders. I was trying to use MS Hyperterminal to grab the track data. i didn't realize that it would not function this way.
*sigh*
Time to dig into the wallet and buy a real program...
Alan - Yeah, I'll probably get the MapSource Topo CD.
quakemap.com: the tinkerer in me ("down boy! sit!") will have to check out that site listing.
To everyone: Thank you! If I weren't going GC'ing after I get out of work ("must... breath.. FRESH... air!") I'd hop right on them. I'll do them when I get back. No sleep for this boy... ...

As my name implies, I an new to this whole thing, so I read the forums to try and get as much information and advice as I can get. Granted, I've only been on less than a week...
The poster that follows me owes me money and STILL hasn't paid me off. I'm calling a collection agency. His name is 'Tony', and he carries a Louisville Slugger... JUST KIDDING! Don't arrest me...

Kealia - OK, just so long as you understand where this was originally coming from, and not a blanket gay-bashing crusade... Over-arching assesments (& subsequent bashing) of entire communities, be they religious, homosexual, racial - whatever - is wrong. I get annoyed when people do that - so I tend speak up. It's all good.

Edit: and, as chance would have it, kenpo is one of the only martial arts I would recommend for self defense. Saw thats what you took in your profile.Ed Parker was quite a man. After I get along in Kenpo, I'm thinking about adding Jeet Kun Do, as Mr. Parker & Bruce Lee worked closely on the systems together for a time. Very interesting stuff...
AND FUN!

OK, here's my $.02...
The first priority for safety from other humans is a good martial art. Someone might take your firearm, stick or knife away from you and use it on you. A good self-defense art will not only give you 24/7 weapons, it will also give you self-confidence, especially for the ladies who GC solo.
The next priority for safety (as I see it) is a firearm. I'd rather use my fists and feet on someone, but if I *have* to, I have no compunction whatsoever to defend myself or another with deadly force. (*edit*: While remaining within local, state & federal laws)
*AS WITH ALL WEAPONS*, be it a gun, knife or stick or your own hands, *YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO USE THEM*. As in taking a proper firearms certification course, or a martial art for knife fighting, stick fighting, etc.
(By the way, my own personal preference for unarmed self-defense is Kenpo Karate. If you really like your stick(s), look up Escrima/Kali. Kenpo & Kali complement each other suprisingly well... and are both a lot of fun while still being effective).
As for snakes and other animal problems... Well, that's the job of my firearm.
Also, a hunter safety course should have information about how best to deal with animal interactions in your area. For example, don't shoot a bear unless you really really really have to. Play dead. It's safer...
Most animals (unless rabid) would prefer to avoid you at all costs anyway.
Well, that's my $.02. Thanks for reading, and feel free to email me with any questions you might have regarding martial arts. I'll try to answer them as best as I can, even though I am not a black belt yet.
