You people are too funny! How often do you all actually run into other cachers on the hunt? I still haven't met any. But introduced a few to the game!

icon_smile.gif It's too much fun sometimes!

I've actually never met another cacher, though I may have evangelized one (soon). Only found 3 caches to date, for what that's worth.

  2. Actually that law is intended to keep people from drinking while they drive and killing innocent people.

As far as what to do with your trash or incomplete 6 packs? Put them in your trunk where they belong until you get home or to the dump. Duh.

  3. I don't know about where you are, but in our state, several 'bad' things have happened that put Campus Security on edge & on the prowl.

I would most definitely get permission, simply because the UCops are gonna be suspicious. Your GC'ers are probably going to have to explain A LOT if they are caught on campus grounds without a School ID...

  4. Um, I won't go into flame mode here, but I will say this.

Cops only enforce the laws that the elected officials WE vote into office create. And I don't mind one bit if one of them stops and asks me questions if it means the one time out of 99 they do that they grab a pedo & bust them before they can claim another victim.

I'd rather be profiled and help to protect innocents than let some poor person get 'whatever' because being asked a few questions inconvenienced me.

Sorry, but I'm just not that selfish.

And if you should want to be able to communicate without inciting a negative repsonse from the officer, may I suggest you read "Verbal Judo"?

  5. What a great use of GCing. I never thought about all the disparate disciplines that can be incorporated into it.

    Cartography

    History

    Ecology

    Ethics

    Sociology

    Physical Education

    Math through at least triginometry

    Safety (strangers, woodland survival etc)

I'm sure there's more. Great job everybody!

  6. I swear I'm gonna smack the next TV/movie studio executive that thinks "Extreme", "EXTREME!", "eXtreme!" and any other variation is an orignal (*&^%&^ idea.

I HATE that word now. Extreme Mountain Biking! Extreme Bubblegum Chewing! Extreme STHU ALREADY!

  7. The eTrex Legend is a step down from there. It has a compass, but I don't know if it is electronic or not...*edit* Legend does not have electronic compass.

It's about $200, and you'll need to buy the appropriate map CD, which costs about $100, depending on where you go.

Otherwise, it meets all your requirements.

(Legend has 8MB ram, Vista has 24MB, I *think*. I'm told that most people don't use all the Vistas memory. Dunno. Both are black & white units, by the way.)

I'm happy with my legend, but as I get close to the target waypoint, I find funky things happen with bearing and distance numbers. Then again, I've only done 3 finds so far...

*edit* Here is a Garmin eTrex comparison chart.

  8. /agree

And use hollowpoints for home defense, not ball ammo, for the same reason posted above: ball ammo will got hrough walls with very little resistance. Hollowpoints 'mushroom' and create more drag (if they dont break apart, even) and be stopped 'sooner'.

  9. Glad that worked out for you. You should always be careful what you do with your unit. shifty.gif

As far as reinitializing, I imagine turning it off/on should be sufficient. There is usually a display screen that listed the firmware revision number. Check the manual for how to find this screen (might be an "About" screen or similar). If it matches the update software revision number, you are all set.

For example, my Legend currently is using Version 3.40, which is the most up to date according to the website.

    Good luck!

Maybe that is what we should try with the Beaver Brook Association. Their land is not that far from you. They are private and have kicked all the geocaches out.

Awww CRAP! I was gonna DO the Beaver Brook (GCGPXB) hike in about 20 minutes. Arrgghhh.

Um, how did you know I was close to it?

Thanks for the info all. Must chew the cud a bit.

[edit: the solicitation I was referring to would be in the brochures ONLY-no log book or geocache web page]
