THE GEOCACHE EXCHANGE: International Trading
New England n00b replied to CO Admin's topic in General geocaching topics
This offer is still open: quote:I will make a New Hampshire, USA for shipment to anywhere is US/World (except NH) or General USA for shipment anywhere outside the world. The cache I'd like to see in return should be themed for your nation (outside US) or your local non-US region if there is enough material for you to build a local cache. If inside the US, your cache should be state-specific. I'll be using one of the spare 30 cal ammo cans I got in my last purchase. I don't care what container you choose, so long as it's a good quality and not a cheap gladware type product. If anyone is interested, please email me through GC.com and we'll get things rolling. --------------------- It wasn't me. -

Hey, dimwit, you spelled dimwit wrong. I can't get WAAS in my area, so I turn it off to save battery power. Does that make me a dimwit? I FIGHT YOU NOW! ARRRGGGHHH! All in fun leatherman --------------------- It wasn't me. -

I am a Rent-A-Cop, and let me tell you that assaulting an officer, no matter how 'right' you think you are, will get you jail time. Before any of you explode in anyones face, I'd recommend a book called "Verbal Judo"[/url. I'd suggest reading this book to help you get what you want/need with a minimal amount of confrontation. And for the record, it is written by a real cop, so maybe some of you might see the other side (the book is directed at all audiences, not just cops). Now, having said all that - Most police officers have a Force+1 kinda rule. Essentially if you lay a hand one me, I am allowed to use as much force as reasonable to stop you, up to deadly force (ie you pull knife, I pull a gun). Us Rent-A-Cops are much more restricted in what we can do (we CANNOT arrest in 99% of the cases), but we can defend ourselves or our clients from harm. And some of us can do that quite well. BTW-Lowrance - you might not want to make threatening letters to police - I'm not sure if a general threat is gonna net you anything, but if you direct that at am individual, it is a crime. --------------------- It wasn't me. -
I also have a Legend, and from what people say in the GPS Units and Software forum, the screen indicates a problem with a connector inside the unit. As to the accuracy, I frequently get 25-35 feet accuracy under mild to medium tree cover. I'd suggest reposting this in the above forum, and you will get many more knowledgable folks dishing out better info than I can. Good luck! --------------------- It wasn't me.

If a glass jar with lid works, how about one of those plastic 'contractor' mayonaise or pickle containers? They are large (1 gallon or larger) & have a big opening (5+ inches?). I'm not sure if they would work for you, but they seem to keep the pickle juice inside when the lids on tight...? --------------------- It wasn't me.

Are we the cache police?
New England n00b replied to Scout Master's topic in General geocaching topics
My only thought is if you really saw a problem, let the approver know privately thought email. It's up to them to make the call. Maybe they'll have someone local go and check it out and report back. Who knows. But blasting it in the forums is not the 'best' approach. --------------------- It wasn't me. -
1) Though I am not logged in, I can post & access the Geocaching.com portion of the forums 2) The edit button & report (I think, never used) buttons do not show up. The quote button DOES show up. The Machine I am on right now is a Red Hat Linux box, using (copy/paste: Mozilla 1.0.1 Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.0.1) Gecko/20020830 This isn't my box, so i don't know what this means or if it is usefel to you webmasters. If needed I can try some experiments if you email me, but I can't guarantee that they will get done in a timely fashion (as it is not my machine). Thanks! --------------------- It wasn't me.

I think it would be very hard to tell. I'd say the results would be the same as averaging (which some say it pointless - me, I dunno) Basically I believe all the units 'margin of error' would be in the same ball park. I'm not a statistician-type guy, but that's my 2 cents. --------------------- It wasn't me.

Ditto what BrianSnat said. And a real compass is relatively cheap $10 up to whatever you want to spend, and is much more useful when close to the cache (use the bearing numbers provided by the Legend). Nosy curiosity requires me to ask that you post your decision when you make it... --------------------- It wasn't me.

Special treatment for approvals - ok or not?
New England n00b replied to Mr. Snazz's topic in General geocaching topics
Ask all you want. I want a million bucks - I can ask if I wanna. Doesn't mean it's gonna happen, though. It's really up to the approver, as Keystone said, to come up with the most efficient means of going through their work load. --------------------- It wasn't me. -

Approvers & Admins, please avoid the forums
New England n00b replied to RJFerret's topic in General geocaching topics
quote:just wait until they sell out to Yahoo!, or AOL, etc... and you have corporate types running the site instead of geocachers Thanks for the nightmare BrianSnat! Just what we need... a healthy dose of ePHB's running this place and dumping spyware and extremely annoying banner ads everywhere. And Commercial Spam Caches from paying advertisers. OMG... *shoots self* --------------------- It wasn't me. -
I don't know, but you could get an official answer by going to the forum of the region you are from. At the top of the page, there names there that are moderators/approvers for that region. Clicking their name should give you a profile page, and from there click to email them your question directly... --------------------- It wasn't me.

GPS Rookie needing suggestions
New England n00b replied to Halx's topic in GPS technology and devices
I love my Garmin eTrex, but it is NOT suitable for driving due to the small screen size. However, it is PERFECT for gc'ing, for the same reason, plus the buttons (UNlabeled) are kinda ergonomic for holding and using. On the other hand, it is terrible for mounting and button pressing. If the unti you want is for navigating while driving, don't go for the eTrex. If you really don't care too much about the driving aspect and want a light, comfy GPS, the eTrex Legend runs ~$199.00 (but most websites have it at 179 or less). Also, whatever GPS you buy, get a nice little magnetic compass to make those close-to-cache hunts easier. The 'compass' on many GPS units are actually direction finders, which is a bit confusing. The 'Bearing' numbers the GPS gives you are always right when used with a real world compass. Eh, good luck. I think I just spewed out too much information. Hope it is helpful... --------------------- It wasn't me. -
I think it is a great idea - use circle hooks (no barb, great for catch and release). They'll be less likely to stick and hold into someone if they grab it wrong. I've been giving this some thought, and I have seen translucent 35mm plastic film roll cans around. I bet these would be ideal little holders for your hooked lures - you can kinda see inside, and little kiddies aren't gonna easily grab it and get ouchied. Of course, they would need to FIT in a 35mm film roll can in the first place - dunno what type of lure you are making. If they do fit, perhaps you could make a sticker for the can stating who you are and that the item inside is a sig item from you. I'd snag it and put it on display, myself... Great idea stonefinder! --------------------- It wasn't me.

Hehehe, I can't see putting ANYTHING used in a cache when I can go to a dollar store. I don't have kids, so I am free of the curse of the McToy. I can't remember the packaging 'buzz baits' come in - I think it might just be a cardboard backer, no bubble. I guess I can always wrap it up in something. --------------------- It wasn't me.

I love my approver because.......
New England n00b replied to Bilder's topic in General geocaching topics
My approver has never once approved of ANYTHING I've done. Of course, I haven't actually submitted anything yet so... But I hear s/he is a nice guy/gal... --------------------- It wasn't me. -
I love Buzz baits and large lures for bass fishing, and I thought it might be kinda nice to put lures in caches as a trade item. The only catch is, well, catching some poor geocacher's kid as they rip into the cache looking for that favorite McToy... Has anyone done this? Can anyone recommend a safe way to do this? Thanks! --------------------- It wasn't me.

I've recently hit our local Dollar Store & I carry the stuff with me when I cache (~$10 worth, +/-). I agree that we should try to at least equal the value of what we trade out. My problem is that I stink at guessing the value of what I take... When you guys put new items in caches, do you remove them from the packaging, or leave it so people will see it's new? Sometimes the packaging get to be a bit much top stick in a packed 30 cal ammo can...? --------------------- It wasn't me.
