  1. But the Legend doesn't have a magnetic compass, so would declination even come into play?
  2. id=1575429 LOL, my number is HUGE!
  3. The whole purpose of most bugs is to have a long life with lots of travel, it's what they were born to do! So instead of making them die, grab them and move them along to another cache.
  4. I have a waterproof-paper log in my cache. I have a god container for it, and everything in it is in a Ziploc baggie, but being 8 feet underwater makes a waterproof log necessary, just as a precation. And hopefully finders will take that into consideration with what they leave behind, too.
  5. I always wear a hat to keep the sun out of my eyes and my hair out of my face. I really need a haircut....
  6. I have a Legend HCx and a PN-40, same size screen on both, and screen size has never been an issue.
  7. Probably the cheapest handheld unit with full street-level maps out of the box would be the DeLorme Eartmate PN-20. The Garmin eTrex Legend HCx can also do full mapping, but you need to buy extra maps to have anything more than major highways. Or are you looking for an automotive-type GPSr with verbal turn-by-turn directions? If so, just keep an eye out for sales, I picked up a Garmin Streetpilot c210 and a Navigon 2100 for $75 each on deals I found.
  8. There is some "noise" in those results, kind of like a Boeing 747 taking of. Besides it just being based off a keyword search off of Google, it doesn't take into account how long the units have been out, and the longer a unit is out, the more complaints people will have. Also, this doesn't specify a problem with a new unit, a problem cause by misuse, or a problem that is just user error. Those numbers are really pretty much completely meaningless. Although I do appreciate the effort you put into at least TRYING to sort through all the stuff you hear.
  9. If you're talking about the Garmin City navigator software, then it will give street-level details and enable you to autoroute on the roads to get close to the cache. I'm also assuming here that you have the Legend HCx, of course. Other than giving you turn-by-turn directions on the road, I don't think it will really help you cache, unless it comes with a higher-resolution topo map also. And even then, that just gives you a more detailed look at the terrain.
  10. I've had some good luck with a Nalgene bottle. Stayed dry inside even though the cache itself is underwater.
  11. Looks like we might be getting some sun this weekend, and if so, I can post a pic of my garmin Legend HCx next to my DeLorme PN-40. Don't have an OR or CO, or know anyone with either, so can't do any more than that. I do have a Garmin Streetpilot car GPS, I could have that in the picture, too. It is a touchscreen Garmin, although I have no idea how that touchscreen membrane relates to the one on the OR. Heck, I'll just get a pic of the Legend HCx, the PN-40, the Streetpilot, my Navigon car unit, and my Dell Axim PDA, just a little bit of everything GPS-related that I have.
  12. I've never had a problem with anything refurbished that I've bought.
  13. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0464006/ Could actually be interesting if it's done well. Edit: Hmmm, that actually says it's from 2007, I wonder if they did a remake of it, or if it's totally new?
  14. January 2008- Pharos GPS add-on for my Dell Axim X30 PDA. Worked OK, but routing was crap. Only tried using it for caching once or twice. Early-Mid 2008- Garmin eTrex Legend HCx. Nice unit, still have it. Mid 2008- Garmin Streetpilot c210. Got it off woot.com for $75, couldn't pass that up. Needed something better for autorouting in the car. Plus, it's a Garmin, so I can load caches on it to route to the area. Still not really happy with the way it routes, though. Also mid 2008- DeLorme PN-20. Picked up a refurb unit for a good price. Wanted to give it a try-out and see if I wanted the PN-40. I did, so I sold the PN-20 about a month after I bought it. Mid-late 2008- Navigon 2100. Another car unit, got it for $75 at Office Depots closing sale, couldn't pass that up. Smaller than the Streetpilot, and routes better. Use this in the car primarily now. Late 2008- DeLorme PN-40. Santa liked me this year! My new primary caching unit. Paperless caching and aerial imagery FTW! Now I just need a 32GB SDHC card to go with it, the 16GB I have doesn't hold as much as I want, which is actually more than I need anyways. So there it is, went from 0 GPS units to 5 in the course of a year.
  15. I was going to mention the PN-20 too, but I figured that they were looking for something nice and simple, and while I liked the PN-20 I had and love the PN-40 I have now, the Garmin hardware is easy to use, and the Garmin MapSource software is much easier to use than the DeLorme Topo 7.0 software, although the DeLorme software is pretty powerful, moreso that the Garmin software. But sounded to me that they wanted something simple and easy to use for caching, so I just left it at the Garmins.
  16. Maybe look at the Garmin eTrex Venture HC or Legend HCx. Nice units (I have a Legend HCx), main difference between those two is that the Legend HCx has a MicroSD card slot for expanding the memory to add maps if you want, while the Venture HC does not have that option. Both have a color screen, high-sensitivity receiver, nice form factor, great battery life, and ar right around your price range. Not a ton of bells and whistles, but sounds like you aren't looking for that anyways. Both also have a USB connection, so you can download caches directly from geocaching.com if you are a premium member, and manually entering coordes is easy to do, too.
  17. I have a Legend HCx, and it works fine. But I also have a DeLorme PN-40, and I REALLY like having the electronic compass over the GPS-based one on the Legend. I leave the altimeter off, couldn't care less about that, but the electronic compass feature sure is nice!
  18. Actually, if you buy the travel kit for the DeLorme PN-xx, it comes with a special rechargable battery pack that you use in place of the normal 2 AA batteries, and if you have that battery pack in, it will recharge the pack when plugged in.
  19. I'll try to get a pic of my Legend HCx and my PN-40 side-by-side, but it's spring in Oregon, so who knows when I'll see sun again?
  20. I'm Ok with the idea of putting the TBs in different areas so the guy doesn't get them, but not with the idea of getting rid of the cache all together. I like TBs, and if I fibd one I'll move it along, but I don't really care if there's a TB or not in the cache, that isn't what gets me to look for it. And getting rid of the entire cache just because somebody keeps taking the TBs means that people like me have one less cache to find. I'd say just stop putting TBs in that cache and leave it at that.
  21. www.heavens-above.com Log in with a location and it will give you info on when the ISS will be visible, and lots of other satellites and stuff, too. Cool sight. Still waiting for an Iridium Flare that I'll be able to see.
  22. Awesome, I wasn't sure if you would ever see this! Anyways, glad you did, and I should get some of those stickers, one for the car, and maybe one for the bike if I can find a good place to put it!
  23. It switches to night mode at sunset, which it knows form the almanac it has that keeps track of that stuff.
  24. Don't forget that the electrical wiring in your house is throwing off a constant RF field that probably doesn't help. I've noticed that my Legend HCx can get a fix from the middle of the downstairs floor in my two-story apartment, but my DeLorme PN-40 needs to be around a window. And even though the HCx gets a fix, it's very poor accuracy, probably because it's picking up scatter coming in through the windows as much as signals sneaking though the building materials and electrical RF fields.
