Has anyone got SirfDemo working with any Garmin x model? When installing the program it says it now supports usb and to see the user guide for instructions on how to install the drivers, but the program didn't come with a user guide.

Find by name works with the 60CSx and City Navigator maps. When you select the maps to load to the GPS, a lot of time is spent building the index file that is needed for find by name to work, my guess is that the computer had a glitch during this process resulting in a corrupted file thus resulting in find by name not working. Try reloading the maps to the unit.

Not the best option for geocaching but great for driving, you can get a referbished iQue 3600 (still has a 1 year warrenty through Garmin) with maps (comes with City Select but you would be able to upgrade to the latest City Navigator maps for free) and auto cradle for $238 after shipping. Nice large touch screen and can use cheap SD cards for lots of map storage.
Can be used for geocaching but the unit isn't waterproof and not as rugged as outdoor gps units, not Sirf III either.

The versions of MetroGuide after v4 have reduced land features, metroguide v8 will have the same detail as city navigator v8.
Since you could pick up metroguide v4 pretty cheap, it might be an acceptable alternative. Otherwise if you want detail streams/lakes you would need to buy US Topo, and if you wanted road navigation you would also need to get City Navigator v8.

If this was a "GARMIN" unit, they would probably fix it for NO Charge!!!

The rubber cover that goes around my eTrex Legend tore and fell off. I just wanted another rubber cover. Garmin told me that it would cost $50 just for that piece of rubber! The Legend was off warranty but I still thought $50 for that piece of rubber was ridiculous. It still isn't fixed. I just can't bring myself to spend $50 for that piece of rubber. Sure wish I could buy a broken eTrex from someone and just take the rubber cover off of it.
I'd call them again (be sure to call and not use email). Some cs reps are more generous than others.

Maybe they can get away with this, since a MicroSD memory card is such a tiny object, and the packaging is so big anyway.
I don't think anyone other than sandisk makes microSD cards, esp in the 2gig size, so I wouldn't worry that you got a fake. And since the 2gig cards are so new I wouldn't worry about it being used either.

You haven't actually unlocked them yet. You should get a pop-up screen when you first try to view the BlueCharts in MapSourse telling you to unlock them. Go through the procedure and enter the 25 digit code. If you don't get the pop-up, try Utilities/Unlock Maps to get the appropriate screen within MapSourse to enter your code.
I didn't get the popup, and I did go through the utilities -> unlock... There is now an unlock code in that section, but they are still "locked"... In the unlock section, do you have to complete the registration portion, or just enter the 25 digit code?
You just need the 25 character key. Since you can see the map detail in mapsource that means that you typed in a valid key, just not a key that is tied with your gps. Maybe the key you got was for a unit that was replaced during an RMA? You'll need to contact Garmin to straighten things out.

Glad to see a page with all the Icons/Tracks on one page. Am I missing something though??? When I created my custom map it covered 72,000 acres with 76 tracks (more than 150 miles of trails) I wanted to be able to label the trails as Green trails - easiest; Blue trails - intermediate, Red trails - difficult; and Railroad Track trails - extreme. The color that the tracks/roads show up on the computer screen in GPSMapEdit is not the color that they always end up looking on my GPS60CSx. Therefore it took a lot of experimenting to see how they would appear on the GPS. After actually looking at most of the roads/tracks on the GPS I could see what color they would really appear. Green is St/Province Boundary (if GPS on 45 deg. angle); Blue (Major Depth Contour) just happened to stay the same color; Red is Major Hwys. (shows up brighter red on GPS than on computer); and Railroad Tracks (stayed the same). Since all the trails are named when I point the GPS cursor over a trail I get the trail name and not the type of line/track icon that GPSMapEdit says it is, so what GPSMapEdit calls the type of line doesn't matter since it doesn't ever show up on the GPS. As far as the color, an example of what I am talking about is "Time Zone". It looks a nice bright Green on the computer but when a custom map with a "Time Zone" line is uploaded to the GPS the "Time Zone" line looks Black. A lot of the roads didn't show up very well when U.S. Topo is showing at the same time.
Please let me know if I've missed some settings that will make everything appear on the GPS just as you are viewing them in GPSMapEdit.

If a feature doesn't have a name, then when you put the cursor on it it will show the name of the type. So for instance if you have a trail without a name and you make it the type of a St/Province Boundary you will see the name "St/Province Boundary" or something similiar.
You can have more versitility by using a TYP file. This is a file that can be generated by cgpsmapper, the file is then added to the registry for the product and will instruct MapSource and your GPS how to display different types. Doing this you can change the style of the lines (solid, dashed, etc.) and the color.

To run the program open a command window and run the program giving it the directory of the maps you stats on, for example:
imgStats "c:\garmin\maps\city navigator north america v8"
The results will flash by on the screen and will also go to imgStats.log in the same directory where the imgStats.exe is located. imgStats.log will be rewritten each time you run the program so if you want to save the results then rename it to something else.

The most common cause of this error is loading a homemade map where the .tdb file for the map isn't up to date. To be a map "product" you need at least three files, an overview .img file, a .tdb file, and at least one detailed .img file. The .tdb file contains all a list of the .img files that make up the product as well as the file sizes for the .img files. If the map author updated some detail .img files but forgot to update the .tdb file, then it causes the error you are seeing.
If you aren't loading any homemade maps, then it's posiable that an .img file or .tdb file has been corrupted. See if you can norrow down which map segment you have selected is causing the problem.

The difference between the two is 1.4%, v8 has 1.4% more poi's than v7 and 1.4% more roads than v7. See this post for the details:

As to if it's worth the upgrade or not depends on how much of the 1.4% difference is in the areas you drive.

I currently have an Etrex Legend Cx and would like to know how to get maps of Okinawa, Japan that I could download or save to my unit. They would help greatly in searching for that geocache.

Other than being able to load all of City Navigator North America on a 1Gig card there is no advantage for using the NT version of the product. And even that isn't a big advantage, 2Gig cards are out now and will be dirt cheap soon enough. Some have said that map redraw is slower when using the NT version. Another disadvantage of using the NT version is if you pick up an older cheap gps for your son/daughter/wife/significant other so they don't keep stealing your gps is that you wouldn't be able to use your 2nd free unlock code for that older unit.

MapSource is bundled with map products, but it is independent of them, so either of you can upgrade mapsource (download the latest version from Garmin's website) to get the newer features.

Looks like 8 and 7 are a downgrade from 6 as far as points of interest...thats dissapointing as I'mpretty dissatisfied with 6 missing lots of business's
The numbers are interesting (well, to me anyway), but there's only so much you can tell from them. If you remove POI's and roads that no longer exist the numbers go down, but the map quality goes up.

The number of POI's has increased 1.4% from 5,354,417 to 5,428,786 (still short of the "Nearly 6 million" that Garmin advertises in my opinion). Total miles of roads has also increased 1.4% from 6,034,103 miles to 6,118,614 miles.

You can also create a .typ definitions file using cgpsmapper to change how any feature (including the background) is displayed in mapsource and on the 60csx.

If you buy a locked map product for your new CSX and it breaks 6 months later, Garmin will replace your CSX and give you a new unlock code for it (you will still have the 2nd code to use with another unit). If you scratch the DVD they will send you a new DVD for free, they won't even charge you postage. Seems reasonable to me.
The cost difference between MG and CN is pretty minimal (for the US anyway). The downside to using MG is that it will be a little more inconvienent to create a mapset that supports autorouting. Since sendmap20 only supports 1Gig of maps you won't be able to create a mapset of the entire US even though the segment size is less than 2025, CN handles roundabouts better than MG (not an issue for most of the US), the directions using CN are more descriptive than they would be with MG, and sometimes the routing with MG is a little quirky.
