  1. Ammo in a cache is perfectly harmless. After all, we make caches out of ammo cans and that same ammo sits in those cans for ages without ever doing anything than just sitting there. And it isn't like kids are out Geocaching on their own.

Still, I would not leave ammo in a cache because I don't want people who don't know any better to freak out and think the world was coming to an end. Of course my being a gun dealer probably makes me more at ease around guns and ammo in general.

I felt a need to respond. I know Groundspeak has guidelines not rules for cache placement, but we feel thay should be followed so the sport of geocaching is consistent all over. Here is a section of those guidelines quoted. Note that ammo should not be placed in caches, "harmless" or not. Yes, kids do geocache on their own.

    I 100% agree with J&J!

Almost all weapons are perfectly harmless, when in the hands of someone trained to use them. Its that when someone find the cache and goes "Ooo! A bullet, lets it hit with a hammer!"

  2. Has anybody heard anything about the Pushawalla Power Trail? I was hiking there today, and somebody came up to me (while I was caching) and said I wasn't supposed to be off the trail. I said I was caching. He said he works for the preserve, and the woman who is now in charge of the preserve doesn't like geocaches , especially if they aren't directly on the trail - and that they didn't get permission to place the caches, and that they were going to start removing them!

    GreasePot

That would be a shame. Pushawalla was a fun hike and a pretty unique experience

Almost all of those caches where within' 10ft of the trail as well. IT'S A FRIGGIN DESERT! Pretty soon the only way to see any of our countries wildlife will be on the discovery network as everything will be off-limits.

  3. Fun Japanese puzzle:

    http://freeweb.siol.net/danej/riverIQGame.swf

Click on link then click on blue circle. Use the rules below.

This is going to do your head in, but it can be done.

Apparently, this is an IQ test given to job applicants in Japan:

"Everybody has to cross the river".

    The following rules apply:

-Only 2 persons on the raft at a time

-The father cannot stay with any of the daughters without their

    mother's presence.

-The mother cannot stay with any of the sons without their father's

    presence.

-The thief (striped shirt) cannot stay with any family member if the

    Policeman is not there.

-Only the Father, the Mother and the Policeman know how to operate

    the raft.

To start click on the big blue circle on the right.

To move the people click on them. To move the raft click on the pole

on the opposite side of the river.

This is what you will see when you solve it! Enjoy!

  4. Isn't it great geocaching these days with all the beautiful green growth everywhere? With the possible minor drawback that it is harder to see caches sometimes with all the growth.

I will agree to that! This picture below is from the P in San Marcos. This area is normally all brown nasty. Now it is covered with 8" grass.

  5. O.k., one more last time ...

Soon it will be too late to see flowing streams in MTRP.

Start at Mission Dam and hike Oak Canyon all the way up to Highway 52 and beyond.

    Hello?

    Is anybody listening?

    Huh?! What?!?!

Who wants to go look at a bunch of mud?

  6. Just a thread created for folks that feel the need to whine about something. No specific topic needed but just the need to whine. Feel free to post here.

Perhaps one of the mods would be good enough to get rid of this account?

But his profile is so interesting......

  7. :P What a bummer...my co-workers want me to lead them on a nice long hike and I've found ALL the caches on the hike they chose! What will I do? (No..it's saturated..I can't add more.)

Oh Dear ..oh well...It'll still be fun I guess :D

No it won't be Jahoadi. Quit deluding yourself. It is all about the numbers. I submit as proof, your own numbers!

If you insist on hiking with your friends, you will have a rotten time, thinking of how many caches you could be getting. You will be kicking youself in the pants at every "find" they make. This is really lame. Don't do it!

What you are displaying here is a classic example of congnitive dissonance. Tell your friends that you are too ill to hike with them, wish them luck, and then go someplace where you can get some new finds.

:D I know this is sacrilege, but I would actually enjoy not having to log a gazillion caches when I got home... :D:D

    :o:o:o;):P:P:D

  8. In the past I would create my own fire circle with rocks from around the camping area.
As long as I have been camping in Anza Borrego (about 20 years), that has not been allowed inside the State Park. There are areas just outside the park where you can probably do that legally though.

    Correct

Rock circles = Prohibitied in ABDSP

Must be in metal containers, like an old 50 gallon drum, or an old keg with the top chopped off.

  9. I've been working on clearing out my 5 mile radius and I felt that I was making good progress.

That is, until my celll phone woke me up at 6am this morning with a massive amount of cache notifications!

I was down to 18 caches, 12 of which were puzzles. Now I have 38, 32 of which are puzzles.

I hate it when that happens.

You must have a lot of caches in your area. It looks like you have over 2700 finds and you still had 18 caches within 5 miles before these puzzles were posted? I've only got 305 finds but have found all but four caches within 10 miles of where I live. Only one is a puzzle cache (which I have solved) but it and two others are in areas that are not very winter accessible. On the other hand only three of the caches within 10 miles of my home coordinates are in lamp post skirts.

Come down to San Diego sometime, we have areas with enough caches to blow your mind!

  10. I know what the " + " means when PolarBear says 7+ miles. It means 5 1/2 miles. Wow 12.5 miles today. It was the work out I was needing. Thanks for the fun and the beautiful scenery!

Yea, I looked at him funny when he said we would be out all day, sun up to sun down, and only do 8 miles=). Thanks for tagging along it was great having you girls along for the adventure in the mist!

  11. If Anza Borrego Desert State Park is off limits, consider caching in the the huge Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area next door. I can't imagine a cache site having any impact to Ocotillo Wells, at least when compared to the impacts of the vehicular recreation that goes on there.

Geocaching does not have any impact on the environment . . . Some of the caches that were removed had been found only six times in the past year. Also, in the Ocotillo Wells area, there just isn't any scenery like this, which is near where the Powder Can Cache was located.

Nor is there evidence of past History such as this:

    689b537c-307a-4b5d-aef1-4f8220984bb7.jpg

And, in the Ocotillo Wells area, I sure haven't seen anything like this, which is in the Domelands area.

I am very indebted to the cachers who put caches in those locations giving me the opportunity to see those places and have wonderful memories of caching in ABDSP.

Why must there be a box of trinkets at the end of your trail?

You poor soul, not know the feeling of discovering somewhere new on your own.

It must suck to need a guide to enjoy the desert.

Shutup, you pathetic sock puppet! You're lower than a troll- at least they don't hide behind fictitious names.

Maybe you need a guide to find your misplaced 'reason'.

    Temper, temper little boy.

Go back under your bridge troll. No one wants to hear your pos comments that only serve to piss people off.

  12. I bought my Meridian Gold back in 2003, and after purchasing a SD card, finally, I found out my GPSr can only handle a 128mb..... I think its time for a new GPSr.

I am hoping to "cheaply" purchase a used GPSr from someone local here in the San Diego region, that may have upgraded to a new one and has their older one lying around.

I tried to get the wife to let my buy a Colorado but she pointed and her pregnant belly and said "Don't you think the money could be spent better here?"

If anyone could help, that would be wonderful!

Seems pretty clear to me that she was indicating that you should be thinking about the young'un's first GPSr instead of selfishly thinking of yourself.

I'd suggest something that is water/drool resistant for starters. Shock resistant is good since those little fingers will probably drop it on the trail a few times. Big buttons would be a plus. And since he/she will probably have it for awhile, I'd suggest a GPSr that has plenty of rubberized parts for teething. (The antenna of the Garmin 60 series seems ideal...)

    :D

:D:lol: I think he gets my old Meridian Gold. That thing has survived countless drops and submersions.

  14. The big thing that becomes a problem is that if anyone can list an Item with what ever number they want we will have tons of numbers that are the same out there, causing lots and lots of problems.

All you people that a whining need to calm down and realize.... Its just a game! You only have to spend what you want to on it.

  15. Do you have an idea of a start time and total miles for the day?

I'm in for hiking. I wouldn't be able to keep up on my push-bike.

Is anyone going to be out hiking and caching this weekend?

Yep, I do!!! I'm planning on all the new caches in MTRP on the North side of 52 on Sunday. Anybody want to come??? Either hike or (push?) bike - I'm good for both.

I want to start no later than 8 in the morning - it'll be an all day hike. Roundtrip - I'm guessing 7+ miles in hilly terrain. Start from Mast blvd trailhead.

These are the caches (in planned order) for a total of 14:

Another Hill, Another Cache - GC1931Q

Qualitative Materiel Development Objective - GC1999Z

    Kimchee - GC1999F

    Economic Order Quantity - GC1998Y

    A Cache Too Far? - GC1998M

    Take Cover! - GC19989

    Urgent Priority - GC1997W

Rest Stop for Old People - GC198AG

    The Last Star? - GC1931Y

Farther Than The Farthest Star - GC1932B

    I Need Water - GC1932M

    Borderline - GC1984F

Cup of GI Joe - GC1932Q

    MTRP 2006 Cache War - Harmon's Trail of Tears - GC1932V

I talked with ThePolarBear and I am hoping to start this loop around 6am on Sunday morning. Anyone interested in a nice bright and early wake up call?

There could be one problem with 6 am start - the gate to Mast blvd parking lot does not open that early (at least not in the past). Does anybody know when the gate opens?

Early-birds park outside the gate where the southbound-52 offramp joins Mast Blvd.

That is where I always park. Don't think that gate has ever been open for me

The slithering part of us has tentative plans on being out there Saturday morning. Should I become food for a hungry mountain lion, or in some other way become incapacitated, and you find my chomped and scattered bones while caching, please notify my NOK. She will likely enjoy spending the insurance money

That means the FTF prize on your corpse would be a free GPSR! mmmmmmmmmmm
