  1. Right, however my point is... how am I supposed to know this prior to planning my hide unless I go and figure out each caches location first? There's a missing piece to this if you ask me. 1. Prepare the cache. 2. Look up local caches in the area and find a good unused location. 3. Plan to deliver and hide the cache. 4. Hide cache and mark coordinates. 5. Log in and submit the cache. 6. BAM, sorry - this location is in use. You just wasted a fair amount of time for a cache I can't place because the location wasn't known to you. You're ok with this?
  2. Group: Premium Members Here's a link to the cache in question: GC17F2Y
  3. Yesterday morning I went out to hide 2 caches (my first ones). I did my research to make sure there were no other caches in the area, or so I thought. First hide went great and off to the second. I got to the location and started looking for a good resting spot, low and behold I find another cache! Turns out to be one of those caches that are not at the posted coordinates, but solving something gets you the right coordinates. To me this kind of sucks because I spent a fair amount of time and energy planning this hide only to find out that I couldn't do it. What to do? To the cache owner: I don't fault you, it's a great cache... I'm just wondering what the procedure is when this happens because I could technically claim this location since it's not posted anywhere. Had I not seen the cache in question there would in fact be two located within 5 feet of one another.
  4. How can I get a hold of 'Dave'? I have a suggestion I'd like to pass his way.
  5. Nah, I live dangerously... like today for example, I'm seriously thinking about busting out that pencil with no eraser... and using it!
  6. Haha, you caught me! And yes, that was the main intention of this thread (to pull some attention away from the other one). Thanks for the welcome! Is it a bad sign when you plan a hide at night after the kids go to bed and then place it on your way to work? (Just the small ones the kids aren't interested in, we'll place the larger ones together of course, and fill them full of goodies.)
  7. You'd think after running my own forum for over 5 years plus moderating another one I'd be used to it by now. Oh well, I'm going to start planning my next hide and make a new pocket query.
  8. As a newcomer to the hobby I've been reading so much negativity lately and thought maybe if everyone could please take a step (or in some cases leap) back and think about what it is that drew us to geocaching in the first place. For me it was the thought that I could have something to do outside with my family. Granted I never knew I'd end up enjoying it so much that I'd be on ebay bidding on Lock & Lock containers like they are going out of style. In case you've forgotten... What is geocaching? According to the wiki, the definition is as follows: How could something so simple and fun get blown so far out of proportion? Can we not just accept it for what it is and not get so technical, dramatic, or otherwise full of ourselves over a container with possibly some "trinkets of little value" in it? I for one hope I never lose the rewarding feeling I get when I spot the container, regardless of where it's hidden or what is inside. I'd also like to take a second to thank the great members here who have answered my questions, and of course Geocaching.com / Groundspeak for putting all of this together in one easy to use interface, I don't know how else I'd be able to do it! And last but not least, the volunteers who take time out of their day to review caches, the forum, and all the day to day activities we all rely on to enjoy our hobby. I guess that's all I want to say, hopefully you take it for what it is... an attempt to lighten the mood around here a little. Nobody is going to love every cache just like nobody is going to love every log comment. But if we take a little extra time on both ends and appreciate the efforts maybe we can all have a little more fun. All the best.
  9. If they are up for suggestions I'd recommend printfection.com, many more color options available
  10. This topic has been beat to death, revived and killed again so many times I lost count.
  11. How about that 'Let's go outside and find some caches' idea I had earlier? I guess being a noobie it kind of sucks to read all the negativity, but I guess it happens with everything people have a passion about.
  12. Continue that mindset when you're hunting caches as well. If it's a cache you don't like for any reason, ignore it... ...and move on. Speaking of moving on... I like all caches, that's why I enjoy this hobby so much... thanks for the tip though. My point was that nobody has to use geocaching.com for their caches, but the ones who choose to do so need to go by their rules... however they see fit to enforce them. I don't necessarily agree with it, but I don't pay the bills here either. PS, I brought up the email issue a while back but nobody commented on it until it was mentioned again... I get no credit!
  13. It's a cache, change some text and move on. (That asbestos suit is coming in handy today.)
  14. Let's all close our web browsers and go find a cache, or maybe even $10.
  15. Since you have Verizon there's a good chance your smartphone GPS (if it has one) will be locked to only Verizon applications, if it doesn't have one then there's a good chance your Bluetooth will be blocked from accessing a GPS device. That out of the way. My Bluetooth GPS works incredibly well, (something like Widcom G-Rayz 2). I haven't however found any good software to use with it yet, although there are some that would work such as Google Maps, Windows Live Search and gpsVP. I guess I prefer my handheld GPS enough to not worry about it, but I'll be interested in hearing what you decide to go with.
  16. As a forum moderator and site owner myself I'm actually surprised this information is allowed to be left public. Email is intended to be confidential information and blatantly posting that information on a public forum without consent is just inconsiderate. That said, I don't see anything 'wrong' with the cache description either but that is for the reviewer to decide, not us. Do what you must, but please keep the private details between those directly involved unless you have their permission to make it public. Just my thoughts on this.
  17. Should be just fine... In fact most devices (Garmin anyway) that have maps on them don't come with the software. You can still use Map Source if you want, you can get that from Garmin for free, although it doesn't have the detailed map it works. Good luck and enjoy the hobby.
  18. Because they would have had to search I agree though, and not to get off topic but... If you do search, you'll get crap for bringing up an old topic. If you don't search, you'll be told you should have. Oh well, looks like someone was kind enough to put the answer for you. This short video tells you all you need to know about posting on forums (PG-13). http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting
  19. Best I can tell it came from here: http://www.maplandia.com/czech-republic/ji...ojmo/hrabetice/
  20. I say we start in the middle of the alphabet with s state that has weather similar to yours... I don't know, how about say... Minnesota? Was going to try something similar but it was just too much work for me, either that or I didn't understand it. Tried this method: http://home.cinci.rr.com/creek/garmin.htm#1
  21. The last firmware update must have changed the SD card support because the 400 used to support a higher size. Key word, support... I had a nuvi that I ran an 8GB card in but it only 'supported' 4GB cards, meaning if I called Garmin with a problem related to my 8GB card all they'd have to do is tell me it wasn't supported. Still looking for where it stated that, if I find it I'll post it.
