  1. I just tried the Mapopolis export on my Tungsten T (with Mapopolis Navigator 1.22). It works great - exported waypoints get plotted on the map, as you would expect, and I can generate routes to them. I don't like Mapopolis's new Geomark system, I much preferred maplets, but that is their fault and not yours. A couple of the exported waypoints looked a little off in the map, but then I don't use their GPS enabled maps so maybe the co-ordinate system in the non-GPS maps is a little less accurate. Anyway, they were close enough to get me and my car to roughly the right area and that would be all I would want as I would use my GPS from there on. thanks, Jeremy p.s. Geomarks definitely will only work on the Palm OS 5 version of mapopolis, the older versions used maplets.
  2. Many of the above programs are cross-platform and can be used with Macs. Here are a few Mac specific ones: Terrabrowser Mac SimpleGPS GPSy MacGPS Pro FlightTrack JeremyA
  3. I don't know this for sure, but I think that you might be out of luck here. I have a cable to connect my Tungsten T to my eTrex legend. However, Palm, in their infinite wisdom, chose not to use the Universal Connector on the Tungsten E so the cable that I have (and probably most others) won't work for you. JeremyA
  4. I think that someone has done this, although they didn't release it - just sent it to those that asked for it. ... Just found it. It was Team Lawrence - search for iPod in their posts, there is at least one post where they mention it. JeremyA
  5. I have heard that EasyGPS makes odd GPX files. Try using gpsbabel to convert the loc file to gpx. Alternatively use bmgpx to get all the benchmark datasheets for a whole county in gpx format. JeremyA
  6. 1) Become a premium member and get pocket queries sent to you in GPX format 2) Get Cachemate (only $7 for a great app) 3) Use cmconvert or MacCMConvert to convert the GPX file into PDB format 4) Install cachemate and the PDB file onto a Palm OS PDA. I believe that the spinner/plucker route can also work on the Mac too. JeremyA
  7. Hi, I have been working on a graphic interface for gpsbabel on Mac OS X. I have many (but not all) of the features of gpsbabel implemented with what, I hope, is an easy to use interface. So far, from the available set of gpsbabel features, it can do: - convert between GPX, LOC and Cetus file formats - combine many files (in any of the above formats) into a single file - remove duplicates, filter by distance, filter along an arc or within a polygon - upload of waypoints to Garmin and Magellan GPS receivers - download of waypoints or track logs from Garmin and Magellan GPS receivers A beta is available at: http://www.jfatherton.co.uk/MacGPSBabel/. It is open-source, so the source files are available there too. I would appreciate any constructive comments or suggestions. thanks, JeremyA
  8. And for Mac OS X users, MacCMConvert 1.4 is now available. This update is based on cmconvert 1.7 (not 1.7.1 - yet), and provides a graphical interface to most of the functions available in the UNIX version of cmconvert. Cmconvert 1.7 added the option to convert to pdb straight from the zipped pocket queries - this is now in MacCMConvert too, but it requires the installation of another library. So when you run this update for the first time you will, once again, be asked for your administrator password (new users may be asked for their password twice - sorry!). Thanks to Maeglin for the hard work that is being put into cmconvert (and Cachemate) - it is difficult for me to keep up! JeremyA
  9. No need to guess... because bmgpx and cachemate work together perfectly. The LOC files for geocaching.com will also go into cachemate, but basically these files only cantain the name and location of the mark. So bmgpx is definitely to route to take. To get a GPX or LOC file into cachemate you first need to use cmconvert (it comes with cachemate) to convert the file to a pdb file. Then simply upload it to your Palm as you would any other file. Jeremy
  10. If you have a Garmin it looks like this cable is compatible with the SJ series. I just bought one for my Palm Tungsten and it works great, especially for uploading waypoints from cachemate to my Legend. JeremyA
  11. Hi, There are probably boundless ways to do this on a PC. On the Mac, I have found a couple of solutions: FlightTrack is an early beta, but it shows a lot of promise. It will download your track from your GPSr and project it onto a 3D terrain map. Version 0.0.9 of this program worked great for me, but since they updated to version 0.0.10 I haven't been able to get it to work. GPSBabel is a good way to get tracks off of your GPSr and save them as GPX files on either PC or Mac. Once you have the GPX file you can go to http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/index.html which is a great site that you can upload a GPX file to (either tracks or waypoints) and have is plot them on a map or show them in profile. 12. I think that I have worked out what has been going wrong here: In the current version of MacCMConvert it is possible to manually enter a file name into the file name field. If you do this then, unless you include the full directory path (in POSIX format), cmconvert does not know the directory that the file is in and so uses the default directory. If the file is not there cmconvert will not see it and cannot perform the conversion. This is not what I intended. What I meant to happen is that you would select a file by clicking on the 'Add File' button to the right of the file name field. This way you can select a file in any folder and cmconvert will know where the file is. The next release of MacCMConvert will have the UI updated to make this more obvious. JeremyA
  13. Hi, The 'spaces in the name' bug was a problem with my applescript in older versions of MacCMConvert. I have since fixed it, and in all my tests with the latest version (1.3.1) it does not cause any problems. mtnmunch - could you email me as I'd like to try to get to the source of your problem too. thanks, JeremyA
  14. Hi, This sounds like a problem with my wrapper - scriptOut is the variable that is used to hold the text output from CMConvert, if all goes well this just tells you how many waypoints were successfully converted. That scriptOut is not defined means that CMConvert has not run properly which is probably due to something wrong in my applescript. Contact me (jeremy at jfatherton dot co dot uk) and I'll try to work through it with you to find where the problem is. Jeremy
  15. I have a suggestion for a way round this which would avoid the extra import time that a more complex dupe search would create... Why not just run your GPX file through GPSBabel before sending it to CacheMate? GPSBabel includes an option to replace the waypoint ID with a new short name based on the long name of the cache. If this works well then maybe something similar could be added to CMConvert. Jeremy
  16. Hi, I have a Tungsten T1: For paperless caching I use CacheMate - it's $7 and worth every penny For internet surfing I would use a regular computer - I find that the screens on PDAs are much too small for most websites. For a bluetooth GPSr you might try mapopolis, I know they used to sell them. JeremyA
  17. The datasheet for this benchmark states: "THE STATION IS A CROSS ON TOP OF A GREEN CUPOLA ABOUT 75 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND." I interpret from this that the benchmark is the cross on top of the church. If the cross is gone then you did not find the benchmark. I would log this as 'not found' at geocaching.com but I wouldn't bother sending anything to the NGS. JeremyA
  18. CMConvert 1.61 is now in MacCMConvert too. Version 1.3.1 also has a couple of other new features from CMConvert in it. JeremyA
  19. If you get the latest version of CMConvert then you won't need the GBSBabel step as CMConvert can now filter by radius before producing the PDB file. Jeremy
  20. Not wanting to let the Mac version fall too far behind - MacCMConvert 1.3 is now available. This update means that it is now based on CMConvert 1.6 and adds a few goodies. Jeremy
  21. mtnmunch - sorry if this is a silly question but... you did build gpsbabel before you tried to use it? If not you will need to make sure that you have installed the Apple developer tools and then follow the instructions in the readme file. I have been working (read 'was working' - progress has stalled) on a Mac GUI-wrapper for GPSBabel. If you are interested, let me know and I will send you a beta. Jeremy
  22. Hi, I have been working on a Mac OS X GUI for GPSBabel. It's still in the early stages of development, but I would like to find some beta testers. So far it will do the following: Convert GPX to LOC files Convert LOC to GPX files Send GPX or LOC files to a GPSr (via usbserial) Get waypoints from GPSr as a GPX or LOC file Upload/Download from GPSr uses Garmin or Magellan protocol Email me if you are interested in testing. thanks, JeremyA
  23. Before you invest lots of money try Terrabrowser. It doesn't have lots of bells and whistles, but if it does what you want then you will have saved some cash. JeremyA
  24. quote:Originally posted by SirRalanN:anyways... do you plan a gui version of this or just leave it. no matter to me, just wonder. this prog makes hunting bm's enjoyable. Sorry, I have no plans to GUIfy bmgpx on the Mac. I wrote myself an applescript droplet for it but it is pretty computer specific so there is no point in distributing it. JeremyA
  25. quote:Jeremy, I have one question about your posting: What would you be able to do with a Palm-GPSr connection that you can't already do with the Mac-GPSr connection? Not too much, which is why I haven't bought one yet! On the more expensive Mapopolis maps you can show your position in real-time with a connected GPS device - I would like this feature at the moment as I just moved to a new city. I believe that Cachemate can read your position from your GPS and tell you the nearest caches - I store nearly 1000 caches and benchmarks in Cachemate so this would actually be quite useful to me.
