  1. My 60CX had the same problem for quite awhile when loading waypoints from gc.com using the Communicator plug-in. I had to update the plug-in several times after it failed to find the unit.

What I found to work reliably is several factors:

    - Use IE7 or better. (I've had problems when using FireFox and the plug-in)

    - Use the newest Communicator plug-in. I've had problems when installing an older version of the plug-in.

    - Use the cable that came with the 60CX, or a good-quality USB-miniUSB cable. I've had cables that wouldn't work with the GPSr.

    - Wipe all the waypoints from your GPSr before loading new ones. Several waypoints are OK, but if you have 100s, it seems to have the connection problem. I routinely wipe all the waypoints after a long trip with lots of waypoints loaded.

    - Sometimes the pop-up window is blank and never finishes. Seems to be a common problem. Just close the pop-up window and try to load the waypoint again.

    Hope that helps.

  2. This is SOO frustrating.. anybody have any ideas for me? When I bought my handheld a few months ago, I was able to download points from my computer right into my GPS.. The next time I tried it, it couldn't "find" a device. I checked the communicator.. updated it, etc. Then all of a sudden it was communicating.. I downloaded a few more sites.. Now its been a few weeks, and it won't find the device at all.

I called Garmin support.. no hint of an ideas.. A friend thought perhaps the black blocker on the cable was an issue. I have tried 3 computers... 3 different cords.. no success. Any other ideas. Its not an option to return my handheld.. It works perfectly in every other way.

    Ideas.. please...

  3. Hi.. I have a new iphone.. I bought the Groundspeak software for $9.99 after I just bought the Geosphere software a few weeks ago :(

When i go to a specific cache page and want to download this ONE page onto my phone, I click on "send to phone" and it tells me I need an account with Trimble Outdoors in order to access the listing.. So I set up an account for Trimble.. Now it says "The listing has been sent to your Trimble Outdoors Account and should be available for download on your phone."

why doesn't it just go directly into the Groundspeak software that I just bought? And how do I now download it from Trimble?

  4. I have the 400 and I'm having the same problem. I actually came here to find the answer. My is sorting in Alphabetical...even though I select nearest! DRIVING ME NUTS!

    HELP!!!! -_-

DId you ever figure this out? If not, let me know, as I was able to figure out my problem... a trial and error thing on my own...

  5. Has anyone else had difficulty with this? I had to trade in my first Explorist LE as it had another issue... since I've gotten my new one, my USB cord will recognize the unit some of the time, and then won't others. Is this the fault of the USB plug or my unit? Every single time I plug it into my computer, the unit will shut itself off about 6 or 7 times.. and then eventually stays on. But my PC will only recognize the unit about 1/2 the time.. today, it won't recognize it at all. I feel as if its not something I'm doing wrong as I've downloaded dozens of coordinates before. HELP!

  6. I have the 400 and I'm having the same problem. I actually came here to find the answer. My is sorting in Alphabetical...even though I select nearest! DRIVING ME NUTS!

    HELP!!!! :anicute:

There's not much to add to what's above...if you are going into the first GOTO screen, you should be able to toggle between nearest and alphabetical sorts with the left-right movement of the joystick. If you chose nearest, you work your way through the menu to select the center point of your sort. If you choose different center points, you *should* get different sorts.

As an experiement, choose nearest, either My POIs or Geocache Pts, and then chose cities. Say OK to the default entry (I get 100 Mile House in Canada), and click again to accept. Does that change your sort order?

I have to suspect that both of you are inadvertently doing something differently in the process to keep winding up with the same sort order. It would seem that the only other explanation is that something is broken--which just seems an unlikely thing. "Unlikely" still means "possible" though...

I appreciate the experiment with "100 Mile House" city.. then accepted it..

    1) it didn't change the order

    2) now I have "100 MIle House" plus a couple of other "POIs" listed below the menu that says "Nearest to: Position, Cities, other"... how do you delete those?

Maybe I should try to reset the entire system? Do you think that's possible? Necessary?

  7. If you have selected "position" as the nearest thing to sort on, your 500 will alway use what it thinks is your current position.

If I read you right, you are trying to find a way to sort by nearest to some other thing, like a geocache POI. If so, choose "other" rather than "position," and then select your sort focus from the available options.

Edit: eh, I re-read your post and see I read you wrong. Try what I suggested above to see if you get a different sort order. But yes, it does sound like your GPS is doing something other that what we would expect...if you are physically in a different location--and your GPS knows it--you should get a different sort order. Could it be the case that your position is not substantially different from home such that the sort order is still the same?

If you can rule that out, then I'd try the standard procedure for trying to shake out the silly behavior: first clear all memory, and if that doesn't do it, re-install the firmware.

thanks for your opinion... i've tried the silly thing in various positions, but the sort never varies.. When I choose the option of sorting it by "other" and choosing the POI, it just kicks me back to the list of caches that are listed.

how do I re-install the firmware?

  8. When you scroll down the list of caches that are displayed, does it give the distance to each at the bottom of the screen in descending order?

yeah.. the distances vary.. some the caches at the bottom are closer in distance than the ones that sort at the top. Its not even in alphabetical order either...

  9. I know it sounds straightforward.. and yes, I know that you click right or left to get it alphabetical or nearest, but the order of the caches never seem to change... it asks me if it is nearest to "position" -- I would expect that to be from the position that I currently am in... but the order never changes, even when I go to a cache... it stays in the same "nearest" order as when I turn my GPS on at home..

  10. This Magellan that I bought has not been too user friendly, but I'm finally getting the hang of it.. but there is one frustrating thing. I have downloaded a number of caches onto my GPS, and even when I click 'nearest to position', it still kicks back to 'alphabetical'. Does anyone have a solution for this?

  11. Make sure you have a fresh set of batteries.

Take a few readings over a period of time and average them.

Use any built in features of the GPSr to average a reading.

Just how far off is waaay off?? If you are within 20 feet - don't feel bad - if a lot further than look into it.

what kind of built-in features would I be looking for in a GPS? If I don't know if it, does that mean it probably doesn't have any?

I am fairly certain the 500 has some kind of auto-averaging feature although I have not used one. Check your manual. It takes readings over time and automatically averages all of them - Leave it for 10-15 minutes for good accuracy readings.

10-15 minutes... i guess i need to be a bit more patient.. thanks for all your input.. will try that next time.

  13. I have a new Explorist 500 that I am happy with.. I find the satellite reception in the forest is outstanding, but I am totally frustrated when it comes to marking a specific spot when I plant a new cache. I wait for the 'accuracy' rate to settle once I stop walking.. I mark it, and then I walk away and use the "go to" feature, and I'm WAYYY off... I mark it 4 or 5 times.. and then average them out... still very unhappy with the coordinate I'm leaving for my new cache. Any suggestions?

  14. hi.. i've got an explorist 500... what specifically do you need to know? Are you getting your computer to recognize it when you connect it?

Thanks for responding. my gps recognizes my computer. i can download gsak to my gpsr. when i try to brings it up on the screen no waypoints or caches show up any Ideas to try.

I use the "magellan geocache manager" that the gps came with. Did you try that program? I'm not familiar with gsak. The MGM is a simple program once its installed and is insync with your gps... maybe you should try that.

  15. sometimes i feel like such a loser when I can't find a simple cache.. especially when someone logs "i've seen one like this before". What is the protocol for asking the owner or someone else that has found it for a hint.. a clue.. of any kind. Has anyone found one on a water drain grate before? Is there something I should be looking for that is done over and over again.. and I'm too naive to know?

  16. figured it out.. but I have the stick pin problem like others do with this Google Earth version... better than nothing.

Having the same problem....used to see the icons, now nothing. What did you do to solve this? I'll be happy to have the stick pin problem, as long as I see something indicating geocaches!

This is what I did which gave me the 'stick pins' -- When I'm on my account page in the geocaching webpage, there is a column on the right hand side.. go down and under "google mapping features" click on "download geocache browser in Google Earth" -- "open" it, rather than save it, and it should open google earth and add the stick pins. If it doesn't, make sure that when you're in Google Earth that your "Geocaching Network KML" (under Places) is checked off.

If you're not happy with the pins, check out this link to a discussion that was had on March 10th in this same forum -- I didn't bother with it, as I'm not too unhappy with the stick pins.. as I said, better than nothing.

    Hope that helps.

  17. why is it when I view google maps in KML to look for caches I get push pins & other times I get the GC icons..I'd like to keep the GC icons as this way I can tell if it's a traditional , multi , virtual or whatever.....It changes as I change zoom level ...is this the reason

    Thanks
