  1. Ok, I'll try that, just seems like it should be eaiser........
  2. Is it possible to upload an image to the site? I just see this icon that wants a URL address.
  3. Maybe the sunspot activity has been affecting GPS locks lately.
  4. I would suggest turning it off entirely and only enabling it when you absolutely need it. If you want to leave it on you'll have to remember to calibrate it every time you change batteries and you need to hold the unit horizontal when the compass is active. GO$Rs What screen do you personally use for navigation to the cache? Can you give me a screen shot pls?
  5. I'll try re-calibrating the compass again and let you know.
  6. I just had an unpleasant experience with the 400t while attempting to find a cache. The needle pointed in the opposite direction of the cache and took me to a point not even close to where I should have been and showed me within 12 feet of the cache site. Then it jumped to another direction and said it was 175 feet away. I went to that point which showed I was within 8 feet of the cache and it jumped again to another direction pointing to a point about 167 feet away. I checked the cache coords to make sure they were accurate and they were. I can overlook the fact that the maps are not georeferenced properly and the fact you can barely see the display outside in the sun, but not being able to fulfill its primary function of navigating to the cache leaves this device greatly lacking. I wanted to like this device so much, but I think its going back to REI...
  7. Thanks for the info Red90, by the way, does it snow that much were you live?
  8. Does anyone know if rechargeable batteries will charge when the unit is plugged into the computer?
  9. My top 2: 1. Make the maximum backlight brightness higher. The same as when you plug it into the USB port. 2. Waypoint averaging. ..Don't tell me you don't need it, its to accurate for it.., etc. I want it.
  10. I guess you are referring to my metaphor of Garmin and Microsoft since you have the impression my comment referred to "poor service". I don't think the Garmin tech rep provided poor service I just don't think he could fix the map issue or the backlight problem. The problem is these things should have been fixed before the product was released or at least in one of the software updates. The answer is not to buy another Garmin product to fix a previous problem with an existing Garmin map product. Which is what you seem to suggest...
  11. You can get free Canadian TOPO maps at this site : Ibycus Topo Anywhere by chance one could get free Topo maps of Georgia or state parks in Georgia?
  12. No I don't and don't plan on buying it. I use this unit for Geocaching not for road navigation. I use the Tom Tom 920 for that. I just want it to be accurate for the maps that are installed on the unit. Is that to much to ask?
  13. I just got off the phone with Garmin tech support. They said the backlight issue was addressed in v. 2.51 beta. I told them it wasn't addressed enough becasue the max brightness is still to dim. I told him the max brightness setting needs to be increased to the value it uses when you plug the thing into the USB port. It gets real bright then. He plugged his into his computer and agreed that was a much brighter setting than is currently achievable on battery power. He said he would send a note to the software engineers to look at this. On the map position plot issue, the bottom line is: its bad, they know it and won't fix it. He suggested submitting a map error log on the Garmin website and it would be addressed in later map updates. I said that won't help me now or in the near future. This company really reminds me of Microsoft allot.......
  14. Well I use a Tom Tom 920 for navigation in my vehicle and the maps and present position plot are right on. Why can't garmin do this? I bought the 400t for Geocaching not road navigation, but I'm embarrassed to show the Garmin position plots vs. road to anyone else.
  15. Just got my 400t yesterday and used it to for a little geocaching. I find myself saying, "Wow this thing is great" and the next breath: "This thing is total garbage". I can't get past the fact the backlight is just to dim to see the screen in direct sunlight. This is a real show stopper for me, all the bells and whistles in the world don't make a hill of beans if you can't see them. The placement of most roads seem to be off by 700-1000 ft. This amazes me given the cost of this unit. The roads don't seem to be properly placed on the map. I want to keep the unit because the paperless cache features are great, but I'm not sure I will given the two things mentioned above.
  16. I just got my 400t today and upgraded to 2.51 beta. I thought I was one of the lucky ones with no problems with the unit. Later I noticed the present position plot that was displayed on the screen is actually 700-1000 feet off from my present position. Nothing I have tried has changed it. Got 11 satellites locked on with GPS Accuracy at 16 ft. It just seems that the map is not correctly correlated with the GPS position. I checked the present position coords against another GPS to see if the 400t coords are accurate - they are. The more I look at this thing I am realizing the underling Topo Map is correct. The streets in my subdivision are incorrectly positioned on the Topo Map. The streets are a gray color. Does that mean something? Maybe its were Garmin estimated them to be? For the money you pay for this thing you would think they would get streets georeferenced with the map.
  17. Thanks, I finally got it to work. Now to find some caches.......
  18. Have you done this before with the 400t? Did it work ok? What folder did you put it in on the Colorado ?
  19. Is there a way to say download 100 waypoints from the geochache site and send them directly to the 400t? I can only figure out how to transfer one at a time. I have tried using GSAK but can't get it to work with the 400. Any suggestions?
  20. Anyone know if the Delorme Topo Quads can be imported into the 400t?
  21. Just save up your money until you can afford the 400t, its about $447.00 now. http://www.cameraaddict.com/viewproduct.aspx?id=9943213
